When I installed Lion, I did not have time machine connected. I have not connected it since installing lion. However, I guess time machine has always been "on". I clicked the icon on the tool bar, went to time machine preferences and turned time machine off (even though it's not connected...). Ever since I did that, I have not seen the pop up message.

But, I will be backing up my computer soon and I would assume once I turn time machine back on that the same error message would pop up.

I guess turning time machine off would be a temporary solution.

I too am having this error, and as best I can diagnose it is related to Time Machine not being connected to the backup disk. When I am in the office and have my USB backup drive connected, this message does not appear. However, when I am not, every 10 minutes or so (and also if I manually trigger a backup) the error will pop up.

In the log I also see this when that happens (which seems to confirm it is time machine):

8/5/11 10:13:03.714 AM com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup

8/5/11 10:13:08.751 AM com.apple.backupd: Error -35 while resolving alias to backup target

8/5/11 10:13:18.950 AM com.apple.backupd: Backup failed with error: 19

I thought this might be due to the local snapshot functionality of Lion. However, even when I disable them with "tmutil disablelocal", the error persists. Also, I can also see that the local snapshots are being created. So, I now believe that the system is having trouble determining that the drive has been disconnected.

I have no idea on how to fix this, but ever since I upgraded this has been driving me crazy. Other posts seem to indicate that this has to do with the rewritten SMB functionality in Lion. My best guess would be that since I do not eject the disk when I leave, but rather put the machine to sleep and disconnect, the new OS thinks the disk is still attached. Just a wild guess here, but any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

HI,

I have also noticed that if i have my TM storage device connected the error message never appears. I have a Mac BookPro and a Mac Pro Desktop the desktop has the TM permanently connected, and the problem never appears. The Mac Book Pro will only have the TM storage connected when i am at my desk, and in this environment the error never appears. It is only when i am out and about or do not have the TM disk connected ... that i get the error.

Thx

John

I am also experiencing this issue, but have suspected it has to do with an application that required macFuse, which is not Lion compatible and I uninstalled it before upgrading. Fuse is used for creating filesystems, and the error is suggestive of something running in the background that has just discovered its file system is no longer supported.

Hopefully this may provide a lead for some savy investigator.

I was actually having the same error when (and only when) restoring a saved version in TextEdit. Time machine has always been off. So I enabled and disabled it in Preference Panel and the error seems that went away.

Regarding MacFuse I completely (hopefully. I followed the instructions in code.google, but we never know with that junk) cleaned it yesterday, but the error kept coming. Oh well, it is probably Time Machine then. Let's see if now it has gone for good.

My MacFuse report may be a red herring. The error vanishes for me too when I connect my Time Machine backup drive.

A note on uninstalling MacFuse, the instructions listed are very inconsistent. And there is a shell script that is not accurate. I ended up poking around and using lsbom on the installer's receipt to find what it had installed where.

OK,

If you are getting this error you are probably using a MAC system with a removable disk that is the assigned Time Machine storage device and at the time of the error the storage device was not connected to the MAC.... the work around until it is fixed by Apple is Turn off Time Machine or always keep your storage device connect to the MAC system.

Thanks

John
