Is anyone able to use Unsanity haxies with Lion?

I downloaded Deskovery but it does not work in Lion (at least not in my new iMac) although "Wobbley Windows" made an effort. Double-clicking the menu bar does not minimise the window to show only the menubar. Instead, the whole menu disappears into the dock in the default way in all recent Apple OSXs. It also messed my desktop image by filling it with broken parts of all the icons on it, making it impossible to work. I had to restart (by pressing and holding the hidden button on the back of the iMac) and all was normal. I deleted the two Deskovery files that were installed.

That seems to be the end of any Windowshade action until Unsanity wakes up (if ever), perhaps sometime in 2012 or 2013, by which time there will be a new OS! I will waste no more time on it. Over and out.

I don't have time to record a video but here's the next best thing: a screen shot from the Sys Pref window.

You can tell it's Lion because I turned off Universal Access, MobileMe, Parental Controls & Time Machine. You can't turn off Preferences in any other version of OS X. I'm now running 10.7.1.

APE 2.6.1 is shown bottom, left. It runs fine in my system.

APE also runs on my OS 7.0, in the sense that it does not crash the computer. But WindowshadeX does not work because Unsanity have deactivated it for Lion. It may be that other Unsanity bells and whistles which I don't have work for other people.

That does not prove anything.

APE deactivates any haxies that have not been certified for the current O/S version. If you open Application Enchancer there you'll find your APE modules all showing red. The haxie's won't work as they have been de-activated.

Your screenshot doesn't prove your using it on 10.7.1 . A video showing you going into About This Mac will. In fact a video showing you going into About This Mac then into System Prefrences , opening the APE prefpane and proving Windowshade works will.

See it's all very well and good going on about the pref pane turning up in System Preferences. But last time I checked my programming docs System Preference has no facility for de-activating pref panes if they are out of date for the System. It will load 'em up but wheter they work is another thing entirely.

More proof please.

The message below appeared on the Unsanity website on July 11. There are zero signs of life at Unsanity. Based on my observations over the last few years, it seems highly unlikely Unsanity will (or can) provide Lion updates.

I have e-mailed Unsanity several times about the basic triad of WindowShade, FruitMenu and Xsounds with Lion.

Since I gave up being a developer for Apple Mac OS I can state that it should not be an issue to update these apps/haxies for 10.7. GUI challenges are a part of the OS.

In the meantime there is Open Menu X that does a nice job. While not as polished as FruitMenu, it has always been my stop gap between OS updates.

It may be me but contextual menus are engrained in the OS. Setting up a "Start Menu" with alias or shortcuts (whatever you want to call them) is a faster way to get your workflow on. Yes you can put them on your desktop, but it is easier to just have a pull down menu. The whole iOS GUI thing still is not the same. It works on the iPad, etc, but not on my desktop.

May be I still have some Windows DNA left in me, but Microsoft did something right with the Start button. With their IBM-centric equipment requirements it was the first "Home" button for PC's. Have to Billy G props on that one.

Bluspacecow, your earlier post stating that "Rosetta is only required to run it on PPC macs" is confusing. As I'm sure you know, Rosetta (when it was alive) did not run and was not installable on PPC Macs. Rosetta ran on Intel Macs only, in order to allow them to run PPC programs.

In any case, Unsanity is dead. After years of silence, they finally emailed customers recently to indicate that they would not be updating their products for Lion. Their official blog is now filled with spam posts; the company is obviously out of business. I suggest everyone get used to working without their products

You only need to get used to working without Unsanity if you upgrade to Lion.

We aren't going there and many of my associate sin our industry are not upgrading either.

I have yet to find ANY compelling reason to upgrade to Lion. Lion *****. Our production machines are crash proof running OSX 10.65, our RIP programme and our Epson and Okdiata printers work perfectly fine with 10.6.5.

We don't have to put up with the lack of Rosetta and we can still use Quickbooks for all our billing as well as many of out CS5 plugins work under Snow Leopard and they don't under Lion. Pro Tools doesn't work under Lion as well. Lion is not ready for prime time.

If you need Unsanity haxies DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION, your computer will not suddenly stop working if you don't upgrade your perfectly good desktop or laptop into a huge iPad.

By all means, stick with 10.6. Have a blast. You are free to believe that Lion somehow turns "your perfectly good desktop or laptop into a huge iPad." <rolleyes> For most of us, Lion works well and we are enjoying the new features.

You obviously don't make your living within the photography, publishing and audio production field, because none of the major apps and plugins work with Lion.

As I said before if you are so bent out of shape because Unsanity doesn't work with Lion. vent your anger at Apple not Unsanity. If your require the UnSanity haxies THEN DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION.

You current computer running any release of Snow Leopard with Unsanity haxies will still function perfectly as it did before without turning it tnto a large iPad.

I can see now because of the requirement that all haxies have code for all 3 Mac architectures that Unsanity may of needed a way of ensuring that Mac wouldn't flip out when it encountered a module that had PPC code in it but no means of running that code. Maybe a bug in the system that they need to code around or something. I don't know.

The capability of running solely Intel is there it just needs to be enabled by them.

Oh and that email ? Funny that I'm a registered user of their software yet did not get any such email. Looked through all my spam folders too. Of course gmail does delete stuff in it's Spam folder after 30-60 days or so so that's not really proof of anything :\

The cause of this is squarely on Unsanity's shoulders not Apple.

There isn't actually any reason why the haxies _won't_ work on Lion. The only reason they don't is Unsanity added a mechanism in their Application Enhancer module that automatically disables APE completely on a major operating system upgrade.

Basically it's like this. When the APE framework loads at boot up it checks an internal variable that tells it what the maximum major point OS version it was last updated for. In this case it would be 10.6.x. It then fetchs the current O/S version. It then compares them - if the current O/S version is higher then what it was last updated for it will disable itself and refuse to be re-enabled until a update is made raising that internal max o/s version.

And I have yet to find a way of changing that special number.

My understanding is that it is NOT a simple matter to make Unsanity's software compatible with Lion, and they are not willing to invest the time and effort to try to do so. I tend to give credence to the message I earlier referenced, the part that said, "due to Apple changes in Lion, Unsanity would not be able to update their haxies." If it were easy, why wouldn't they have already done so, or at least stated their intent?

It would be nice to see a statement from Unsanity on Lion though.
