Drobo freezes 10.7 Lion Server

Drobo S FW 2.1.2 is dated 11/2/11 and was apparently posted to http://www.drobo.com/support/updates.php on 11/3/11.

I noticed it a few days later but, because I have grown sentimentally attached to the contents of my Drobo and because it's been (slowly) doing fine under Lion ever since I switched to USB 2, I was hoping someone else would go first.

And incidentally, Drobo did formally admit to both of the problems we've all been discussing:

"Fixed disconnect problems when Drobo S is connected via FireWire to new Mac systems."

"Fixed wake from sleep issue when connected via eSATA to a Mac."

Anyhow, just now I was feeling lucky so I finally applied the upgrade. Here is my report:

First of all, the Dashboard has not been updated, it's still current at 2.0.3.40648 (7/14/2011). I navigated to Tools\Check for Updates and got, incorrectly, "Drobo has the latest versions of the Drobo Dashboard and Drobo firmware."

So, I downloaded and mounted DroboS_Firmware_2-1-2.dmg, then instead used "control-Check for Updates" to manually install 2.1.2 (via the reliable USB connection, of course). I allowed the Drobo to reboot and it re-appeared in the finder but not in Drobo Dashboard. I closed and "Exit"ed Dashboard, then re-launched from Applications, still no Drobo S seen. Restarting the Mac Pro finally got Dashboard working again. (Note, at no point was anything powered off or disconnected – this was all mouse-and-keyboard work.)

Then I did a couple of quick tests while still on USB 2:

(* But I won't really know for sure until I attempt a large transfer, which is when it was "disconnecting".)

I installed the firmware update 2.1.2 for the Drobo S. So far so good using Firewire, although the data transfers are small in size so perhaps it isn't stressing it much. Of course, Drobo desktop still "loses" the Drobo S after a while. Guess that needs an update too.

Drobo s and FireWire is what inusually had it because of all the videos I watch off of it on my tv.

My setup was like this.

Windows 7 desktop network to shared folder on Mac format Drobo s connected to a Mac mini lion OS.

So I was having problems prior to applying latest firmware. Kept ejecting.

Now everything seems to work.

But I have noticed an unusual behavior.

Most of my hd movies play sometimes with squeaks and squeals. Or would just stop randomly while watching them.

This is most strange.

Either the transfers are corrupt, or playback from Drobo s on Mac via FireWire is bad.

Keep in mind these files are between 7-14gb large.

I have the second generation Drobo - the one that added FW 800. Since upgrading to Lion it flat out locks up if using FireWire. It will work under USB, but it's so slow, TimeMachine never catches up! BckBlaze backing up over my consumer grade cable Internet is outpacing my locally connected Drobo :(

I'll try excluding it from spotlight, although I think TimeMachine relies on spotlight so tat might be a non-starter, or at least take more research.

This is on a Mac Pro (2009). I can't get the Drobo dashboard to install correctly - even when following Drobo supports instructions, or more detailed ones I found searching. It installs, but the majority of text in the UI is misding making it unreadable and unusable :( I have spent several hours with Drobo support, just havent had time to really peruse it. Luckily the dashboard works fine on my MBP so I was able to update the firmware to the recently released latest... But it's been very frustrating and disappointing. And I'm not sure who is more at fault - Apple or Drobo? What I find annoying is Drobo seemed to be surprised by the issues one Lion hit the streets. Didn't they partake in the Lion betas? There were so many issues across all their products I can't believe they coul have missed them. Oh well. I really like Drobo and where they are going. Ithink thy have the most innovative products out their due to their customer experience focus, but I must say their issues with Lion have shaken my confidence and that's a shame.

Read the release notes. You should always physically disconnect your Drobo before removing or installing the Drobo dashboard. Preferably by un mounting the volumes on it then putting it in standby - but it's your data so just unplug it if you like :)

It would appear Data Robotics has finally made an attempt to address the issues of Drobo FS users? The new firmware was released, version 1.2.1. I put two older 250GB drives into my Drobo to test its performance.

To be honest my issue didn't crop up until I got about 800GB+ of data onto the unit. I'm not planning to go that far again, so if anyone else is in a position to let me know plz do? Basically the AFP service would screech to a sputtering halt, and go unresponsive for hours. Forget about Time Machine, it just could not mount the image.

So, firewire is still not working for me, and now it seems to have started disconnecting itself arbitrarily when using the USB connection. Fantastic!

With the latest update FireWire no longer locks up, but it didn't speed up any. Since I pretty much use my Drobo for TimeMachine only, I tried plugging it into my Airport Extreme to backup. It sped up a little, but not much.

I'm pretty disappointed with Data Robotics :(

I'm disappointed they cared so little about my data. They are supposed to be a data backup solution.

I'm very pleased with ZFS on Linux, but I am now seriously considering using Solaris from either SmartOS, or Open Indiana. They are rapidly adding interesting features to their systems. Nice to see Solaris truely open source at last.

Here is one more Drobo showing problems with Mac OS X Lion. Interestingly, in my case the situation is degrading slowly.

At first, it was working, but occasionaly (2-3 times a week) Drobo would freeze, but would work after turning it off, disconnecting Firewire and connecting it back again.

Two weeks ago, the Firewire connection stopped working. I tried using different computers, different cables, different Firewire ports on the Drobo, but nothing worked. The MacMini to which it is connected wouldn't even recognize it.

So I connected it to USB directly to the MacMini. This worked for another 2 weeks, now it is terribly unreliable (freezing every couple hours), and I believe it was even interfering with other USB devices (such as my whole Bluetooth setup, mouse and keyboard)

So I connected it to the USB port on my AirPort Extreme. It seems to be working, albeit very slowly. Maybe it will stop working in a couple weeks...

I am using the latest dashboard software and firmware for the Drobo. Can anyone help?

It's appalling that a solution that was supposed to protect IMPORTANT data behaves this way. Wouldn't it be ironic that my 2 year old Drobo would cease before even one of the 4 HDs connected to it fail?

After starting a new support case a couple of weeks ago after my USB connection started playing up again, I was sent a replacement unit lat week.

Plugged it in, and after an hour or so on Firewire it froze again. So, no surprise there. This is so annoying.

After the replacement Drobo 2 didn't work they sent me a Drobo S in it's place. This has not yet frozen in the last 3 days, so fingers crossed all is good.

This is probably good news for you but not for me. I have a Gen 2 that I'm trying to use as network time machine drive with Lion Server. It works fine for the mini it is attached to but can't be seen on the network. I think the S models are working this way but not the gen2 models. If they sent you an S it makes me think they are not going to try and update the gen2 firmware.

I spoke too soon. The Drobo S has not hung, but when trying to copy files off the drive I get a "some of the data in the file could not be read or written" error.

I've opened yet another support case with Drobo.

I have a Drobo Pro which is working flawlessly with FW800, but not iSCSI with 10.7.4 and newest Dashboard/Frimware. It boots up, shows in Finder for a split second and is gone again. I have crashes of Dashboard and iscsid in System log. As I am a Java developer I was able to start the iscsid "by hand" with DEBUG logging level.

This produces the following lengthy output:
