macbook air with lion not waking up from sleep

I purchase a third generation macbook air (july 2011) with preinstalled lion. It is slow to wake up from sleep (10 seconds). Sometimes when it falls asleep with shell open it wont wake back up with touch of keys (keyboard lights up but screen does not respond). If I close it then reopen, it wakes up. Problem seems intermittent.

But the problem here is that this delay occurs EVERY time, even if you sleep the Air for a SHORT time... seconds, even.

That was exactly the case. Somehow an application had changed it to hibernatemode 25 or something. hibernatemode 3 is default (for Macbook Air) with 'standbydelay = 4200' (pmset -g) which should dump an image to SSD after 4200 seconds to save batteryenergy.

4200 seconds = 70 minutes = sounds good to me!

I'm not going to rush into any terminal changes, but I will see what happens to others and bookmark this to try later! Thanks.

EDIT: I just checked my current hibernatemode and it's already 3. Yet my Air, when I close the lid and immediately re-open it, stays dark for 5-10 seconds. While my non-SSD first-gen Air (Snow Leopard) will wake instantly, as will my ancient iMac. How I'd love to have that instant-wake back again!

You sir are a genius!

This worked for me (slow to wake issue) and I urge others to try the same with trying the free tool Lingon 1.2 to edit launch agents.

You will find few culprits I belive. I found a few suspicous agents trying to run of old apps that I had definately deleted and thought there was no trace of the apps on the system. Be careful what agents you delete or disable - best to google anything that looks strange first to learn which program it is based on.

I can say that I did not have remote sync agent or adobe flash update running and so they were not the issue for me (had previously uninstalled flash and so it wasn't there under the "launch agent" tab). I had instead bizzare things like a previously deleted "virus scanner" which I foolishly installed to tryout (it was even from the mac app store), and a very old epub/ebook reading app which was in fact not compatible with lion but somehow lingered on in the setting.

So in effect, this slow to wake up issue is solved. This is more than likely the holy grail solution many have been waiting for and AndrewFreyer is to be commended.

Actually what the problem is, the ssd that comes with this model has issues. How did we figure this out? After trying everything possible software wise. We just began to get used to the sleep issues. Then we started to realize we needed a bigger drive, but didnt want to get a new machine since this one serves its purpose. So we purchased one of OWC's new SSD drives for the 2011 air and it not only have us 256 GB of space but the drive is faster too. Up until now, we were running 10.8 and had sleep issues. When we would come back to use the machine after 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days, it would take up to 2 minutes to be able to use our machine. Since we swapped the drive, we can now use our machine in seconds. We had an identicle machine still running 10.7 with major sleep issues too. So we installed another OWC SSD drive in that one too and even on 10.7 the sleep issue went away. So the issue was never with the OS or anything software wise. It was in the SSD drive that came with the machine. I recommend you upgrade your drive to an OWC drive not only to fix the sleep issue but to get a faster drive and mor storage too.

The ONLY THING which solved my problem - MacBook Air 2010 not turning on from sleep - was killing the hibernatemode. I tried everything, all the tips we can find here or elsewhere. Nothing worked: reseting SMC, PRAM, selecting startup disk, reformatting, reinstaling i.OS, everything.

But, THIS TRICK HAS WORKED:

  • Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
  • run pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
  • If you see "hibernatemode 3", you may go on the process, or else you need to stop and try other solution
  • run sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
  • Enter your admin password
  • After that, my computer always start when I open the lid. Perfectly.

Tons of info in this thread... and it seems that lots of folks are experiencing a miriad of problems with various solutions. The original issue appeared to be with the MBA not waking from sleep intermittently with Lion installed. And it doesn't seem to be related to hardware as much as software incompatibilities. Again... there are various solves posted here... so anyone just experiencing this problem should take the time to read through it to see which problem best describes their experience.

It's been a few months since the last post... so my contribution may be "too little too late"... but I have had my 2008 MBA (origianl owner) running perfectly for years... and only recently (as in yesterday) did it start the "doesn't wake up from sleep" issue. My issue was the type where after any amount of time in SLEEP mode (not screen saver mode) the computer's screen would not "wake up" at all, even though the CPU may have. Couldn't tell.... but one post describes jumping on the LAN and seeing it active there... so one would assume that the computer was actually awake. So this could be a Screen re-activation issue. Something has a hold on the display controller.

After reading this complete thread... and thinking back on what I may or may not have recently installed on my MBA, the only thing that came to mind is FLASH PLAYER Update! The one that comes up from time to time when you vist a Flash site that triggers the update check.

So... I have run the Flash Uninstaller... and guess what... so far, so good... after several sleep/wake cycles... the problem is gone. Back to normal... my MBA comes out of sleep almost instantly... well under 2-3 seconds... and in most cases... it springs to life in what one would describe as "instantly". Key is pressed or lid lifted, and I'm reaady to go... mouse, WiFi... the works.

If my issue sounds like the problem you are experiencing... try Uninstalling Flash (should find the Flash Install Utility in the Utilities Folder). I would imagine that a move to Mt Lion would initiate a more recent Flash update that may have addressed this problem... haven't investigated that one... yet.

    Cheers!

My brand-new Mac Mini (OS 10.8) also did not wake up from sleep - or, to be more precise, it took anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes and hitting random keys on the keyboard to wake it up.

On a different discussion board, somebody had suggested that removing their 7-port USB hub fixed the problem. Since I was using a 7-port USB 2.0 hub, I removed it. However, it did not make a difference. Frustrated, I re-connected the 7-port USB hub. But now, the problem is gone - my computer wakes from sleep in a split second (as it should), and I didn't even have to get rid of my USB hub.

I have no idea why the problem is gone, but it is gone!
