What happened to Save As?

I use pages for my work invoices and have a pretty comprehensive filing for previous invoices. The omission of 'save as' in the lion version of pages is extremely frustrating. Is there a work around? Will they fix this in the future or should I switch to a microsoft excel worksheet?

Pages-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.7)

Hi b,

Probably better to post this type of message (a request for tech help) in a thread separate from this one (arguing the merits and demerits of autosave/versions, etc.)

The new feature that' bugging you is "resume", a feature that assumes anything you left open is something you're not finished with. Because you're not finished with it, Resume opens it the next time you launch its application so that you can continue working on that file.

Avoiding that popup is something your mother (and your kindergarten teacher) told you (many times, if you're like me): "If you're done with your toys, put them away."

Translated to the current situation: "If you're finished with that file (for now), close the file before you quit Numbers." Do that, and Resume knows you're done with the file (for now), and won't open it when you next launch Numbers.

Same for Pages, but this thread is in the Numbers community, so I've referred to Numbers here.

Regards,

Barry

What happened to Save-As? It died with Steve Jobs. RIP. There is a new way of thinking at Apple and it is wrong.

The new guy Tim Cook thought he would be like Steve Jobs, who he saw being hard on the Apple staff and their suppliers, telling them the way things were going to be, and not listening to their complaints. Then he made the mistake of thinking this is the same "Steve Jobs" attitue he is supposed to have with their customers. Ooops.

Steve Jobs knew that you listened to your customers and gave them what they wanted, and tell your staff to provide it, no matter what seemed possible. This new guy has the whole approach the wrong way around.

I have thought that all along - glad someone has said it. It looks as though the engineers have now got the opportunity to push through their weird ideas that they couldn't do before. Code writers do not understand the way that ordinary users' minds work, Steve Jobs did.

I think it's the very opposite. Jobs never listened to customers, he just watched them and predicted what they would want. Autosave/Versions is probably a result of one of the last orders of Jobs. I suppose he was the one who decided OSX should behave more like iOS.

My theory is it is so half-baked because they were rushing to ship it for him.

Hi Steve,

Just to add a little to your procedure.

Don't just uncheck the update, highlight it and press the Delete key. Software Update will ask something about skipping this update. Confirm that you don't want to install it.

Anytime you run SU after that, that iWork update will not appear, so you don't have to keep dismissing it. You won't see it again until there is a new update which supersedes the one you hid.

Yup, I've already seen how to get SL's versions of TextEdit and Preview running under Lion, and have already done so. Because these are the only two Apple supplied apps I frequently use, but DO NOT want the stupid things autosaving anything, I finally have a way to move to Lion. When my free upgrade to the CS 6 suite is available, that's when I'm going to start loading all of my apps in Lion to use it as my day-to-day OS.

The only thing I'll have to use Snow Leopard for is to run our scanners and some profiling functions that can only be done with Monaco Profiler since i1 Profiler does not yet have those features.

Notably, Snow Leopard's TextEdit had its own autosave that worked just as Adobe CS6 implementation does now: it only saved recovery data in case it crashed.

Try to force-close TextEdit in Snow Leopard and open it again. The unsaved files you thought were lost will pop-up.

This is how autosave should work. Save last version only and only as a backup option, don't mess with the original file. There is Time Machine for versions.

I tried this with SL Preview and after a few days it crashed. Reinstalling it did not fix the problem. Also I could not set it as the default program as Lion Preview kept overriding it. I zapped Lion Preview but when SL Preview crashed I had to reinstall Lion Preview. I still have some files I don't know where to reinstall that were removed when I zapped it. They are com.apple.Preview files. Preview seems to work ok but I can't export to GIF now. It's all so Microsoft-esque now.

I tried Xee and Seashore and SimpleImage to replace Preview and all of them were not as good. Either too simple or too complex or lacking the functions that I needed. I use Pages for text but I use Text Wrangler for HTML.

The ultimate point of course is that I shouldn't have to do any of this. I am really curious to see if Apple deal with this or if they don't. If they don't then this will be their "Windows Vista" moment and people will look elsewhere. I came to Apple to get away from the Microsoft insanity. Now I am looking at Windows 8 to get away from the Apple insanity. I have even considered Linux. I have basically lost my trust in Apple for their future work.

I have plans to upgrade to two new laptops, two 27 inch flat screens, another iPad, and two iPhones. Plus perhaps two new iPod Touches. This was all waiting on the next release cycle of each product. Now I am just waiting for Mountain Lion to see if Versions is optional and Save-As is back. Without that I won't upgrade. That is about $6,900 worth of investment I am now holding off. I am sure I am not the only person thinking like this now. This forum has over 13,000 veiws. Another one on Versions had over 66,000 views. Let's see what happens.
