What happened to Save As?

I use pages for my work invoices and have a pretty comprehensive filing for previous invoices. The omission of 'save as' in the lion version of pages is extremely frustrating. Is there a work around? Will they fix this in the future or should I switch to a microsoft excel worksheet?

I'm running the latest version of Mountain Lion and Save As acts the same way for me whether I have the "Ask to Keep Changes" checkbox checked or not.

I now see a checkbox in the Save As dialog box for "Keep changes in Original Document". I don't remember that being there before. Unchecking it makes Save As act correctly again. I think it still does something to the original document (reverts it) vs leaving it completely alone but the end result is the same.

Thanks for the reminder Kurt! I don't have a direct interest as I use Microsoft and Adobe products. The latest version of Office, which is much more similar to the PC version, is actually very pleasant to use... and I am no supporter of Microsoft, so that is a grudging complement.

In going from Office 2004 to 2008 Microsoft's behavior was highly reminiscent of Apples's changes between OS10.6 and Lion/ML. They seemed intent on giving themselves a good ol' wupping with the ugly stick. For example, in 2004 command-option-z immediately after opening a word document took you back to the last insertion point the last time you saved and closed the document. This funcionallity disappeared in 2008 but returned in 2011. I wonder if Apple will be so quick to correct their errors. I can use SL for the next 4 years, no problem.

After making the System Preference and other changes I noted, the apps I tried all work as I expect (pre Lion). Unfortunately, I can only make those tests with a limited number of apps since I don't use any of the iLife or iWork programs.

TextEdit and Preview do work like Snow Leopard. If I make changes and just close the file, I get an option to Revert Changes, which is the same result as the previous Don't Save. If I do a Save As, the original closes and stays the way it was when I opened it. Only the new document has the changes.

Same here. All of my real production work is done in the Adobe Master Collection. I have not a single use, or need for any of the iLife or iWork apps.

A lot of folks dislike MS, and while I don't like things about them either, I have used Office for a long time and see nothing wrong with it. I also use a Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard. It's the only ergo keyboard I've found for the Mac that doesn't cost a fortune, isn't wireless and has Mac drivers. It's sturdy and very comfortable to use. I can't stand straight keyboards, and that's all Apple offers.

Totally agree with the majority of people here: the loss of the Save As function is, well, a real loss!

It now takes twice as long to rename a file than it used to and this is not progress. It is change for the sake of change.

Innovation, we like (nay, we expect it of Apple); but meddling needlessly, er, no.

I hope you're aware that Save As... is now available again in OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion). Hold down the option key when clicking on the file menu, and Save As... will appear. It functions pretty much the same way it did in pre-Lion operating systems.

Thanks, DChord568, I didn't know that this function existed.

I haven't long updated our system and still getting to grips with what's new and what's gone. I have found, sadly, that my 2011 MacBook Pro does have the spinning beachball far more often then when on 10.6; indeed, our new iMac (pre-loaded with M/Lion) also suffers from the spinning ball; the old one never did. Let's hope that is resolved with Mavericks!

Again, thank you for taking time to respond.

Best wishes

Simon

"It functions pretty much the same way..."

It's that "pretty much" that bothers me. I've finally upgraded to ML and like it fairly well except for some strange issues with color saturation in the finder. But I'm sticking with the old/new duplicate and save routine I was forced to use in Lion. The reason is that I just want to be sure that my original file is going to still exist in its original form in any circumstance.

I just don't trust the new save as. Am I wrong?

I've tried to figure this out and I find it impossible. Today's example: I download an image from Facebook. It opens in Preview. I want to save it - but where it "Save As" - it's not there! So what am I supposed to do instead? Someone please tell me. I've got options like "Duplicate" (so does that mean I then have two identical versions open at the same time? Why? Or "Save" - save where? It doesn't tell me - so I save but where did it go? Or "Move" - move from where? Or "rename" - which doens't seem to do anything close to what you'd expect it to. What a mess, how can this be?

This discussion began in 2011, when OS X v10.7 (Lion) was the current version of OS X. That was the version in which Save as... was removed and replaced with Duplicate. In Lion, pressing the option key did not change the Duplicate menu item in the File menu to Save as...

"months and months" later, Apple released a new OS X version, v10.8 (Mountain Lion), in which Save as... was returned to the File menu, but required pressing the option key to reveal and choose. Soon after that (on the day of its release, as I recall), "the fact that holding down your Option key while clicking the "File" menu option causes "Save As" to appear" emerged in this forum. It is difficult for a 'fact' to emerge before it becomes a 'fact.'

I think your reply is misdirected, Csound1.

The first mention in this thread of the reappearance of Save as.. in ML was posted on or about January 28, 2013. I (and others, probably including you) saw it then.

While I'm signed in, I would just like to concur with the comment about adding extra keystrokes:

Why should I do apple-shift-F for a find-by-file-name seach, which is the only one worth doing?

Why should I have to type quotes around my search term in preview?

Actually, for me this is a serious issue. Preview is the only Apple software, apart from Safari, which is better than the competition... in all respects bar one! Whupped with the ugly-stick if you ask me.
