Play head disappears

I use the blade tool and make a cut, continue to play to make another cut, but the play head disappears. The clip still plays normally, but the yellow play head is gone, how do I get this back?

I've just done some further testing and have managed to find the PLAYHEAD BUG.

To start, make sure you switch your skimmer mode off....!

  • Begin a new project and add several clips to the primary storyline
  • Press Shift Z on you keyboard to fit the clips to the timeline
  • Place the playhead towards the end of the project, and hit play (spacebar on your keyboard)
  • As the playhead moves, slowly pressing Command + on your keyboard to zoom in

You'll notice as soon as you reach the zoom level that shoes the following timecode

the playhead will jump to the beginning of the timeline, but continues playing where you originally asked it to play from.

If you now hit the spacebar to stop playback, the playhead jumps back to the original playing area and all appears normal. However, if you attempt to grab the playhead and scrub the timeline manually, the playhead goes completely crazy and moves you to the beginning of the timeline.

I've tested this several times and found it only happens when the zoom level reaches that specific timecode.

Current workaround: Zooming up or down one level (command + or - ) will bring the playhead back to normal.

I've sent Apple feedback and also added this thread link so they can see that several people are experiancing the same problem.

This is an annoying problem I've been having all day with Final Cut Pro X. Typically after this started happening the program would crash (or 'unexpectedly quit'), losing 'saved' progress at one point as well. I've called Apple multiple times and at one point they recommended reinstalling the program. I did, and for about 5 hours it was all good and then the problem returned, followed by another crash. This bug really needs to get fixed. Keep posting about it people and please call Apple about the problem so they report it to their engineering department.

I get this occasionally as well.

Either the playhead jumps back to the beginning of the storyline, or as happened yesterday, the skimmer was working - but around 15 centimeters to the left of where the cursor was!

I quit and relaunched FCP X both times it happened and it cured it for a fairly long time, but still very irritating.

Fully agree, but sometimes I feel like I'm doing their job !!! Indeed, if they're working on FCPX, they should get the same issues as ours. And I think they know all of them so I don't like their silence...

So I do hope that they will FASTLY release a patch in order to solve these irritating little issues (and abnormal for this kind of excellent soft) and that they will not wait the next big update in 2012 (with multi cam, etc)...

Is it really abnormal? That ***** then! I hope they have something up their sleeve then. You know what would be really funny, if they jumped the price back up to 1000 dollars....and had some amazing update....ahahaa...

In any case, I'm going to stay on the boat because I like the philosophy. I've actually produced paying jobs. And, I fortunately have enough patience and time-frame to work with it. Not to say that I am not pressured but the program is good enough for me to do my work. I'm not making a daily news report clip....

Yeah I got this before and after the update but didn't really bother much with it.

Like someone else, I click to position the playhead & it refuses to go there & goes to the beginning of the video instead. It goes away once I use the keyboard up/down arrows as an alternative to getting where I want.

Other times, it is actually where I want it to be but shows in the wrong place (like the video).

If I ignore it, it seems to sort itself out after a few clicks.
