HI,

As the Original Reply states you cannot delete an Apple ID you can only stop using it.

This has different effects in Different Places.

Here In Support Communities it is also linked to an Alias used to post. (you will also not be able to use this Alias either as the Alias and ID are sort of Hard Coded.)

Your iTunes money will have to be spent on the account you want to stop using (there is no way that gets monies repaid - I am sure there are in the case of a Death or something like that but for everyday use it is not done)

This may have a knock-on effect on which purchased songs can be played on which Authorised computers.

Hi! my question is simple. I want to activate genius mixes for my ipod, so i went to the nearest computer and created an apple id and i was not asked for payment options. Now when i try to use that id in my itunes i am forced to enter a credit card number. The ipod was a gift and i dont have a credit card :s any ideas? Thanks

HI,

It may pay to pop across to the iTunes Community here at Apple Support Communities for clearer and more definite info.

Having said that I am starting within an Apple ID that does have a Card linked to it.

I can use the Drop Down on the top right of iTunes where my name appears and access my Account settings.

One there I can use the Edit Button to edit the card details.

One of the options IS NONE.

My understanding is this can be done somewhere in the set up procedure.

(At that point my working knowledge of iTunes drops off considerably)

So there's no way to delete a name@me.com email address associated with an Apple ID? But it is possible for the aliases right?

If I delete those, do they become available for everyone else? (Myself included if I create a new Apple ID?)

I was hoping to take it from one account, and create a new Apple ID with name@me.com (well, it would be name@icloud.com now).

HI,

An Apple ID that has been registered in the last few years is an email.

This can be external to Apple such as a GoogleMail one or yahoo or even one given to you by your ISP.

It also can be one registered or rather Issued by Apple such as an @mac.com name from the .Mac Service (Pre MobileMe) or and @me.com issued under MobileMe (both Paid for set ups) and the current iCloud isue of @me.com names.

These IDs in all their forms are Permanent.

During the MobileMe period Apple used the @mac.com registration page as "Free iChat Names" as Apple have an agreement with AIM that Apple Issued IDs (@mac.com and @me.com) will be recognised as Valid AIM Names (you have to keep to the AIM character limit for the password though (max 16 characters) )

The Apple ID will at this point let you sign in to iTunes, App Store and the Game Center and purchase Apps or iTunes stuff.

You can use it here at Apple Support Communities where it is used to Register an Alias for Posting on the first time you come here.

You can do similar with the Developers forums.

Since iCloud came out you can link it to iCloud as well. (this may give you an additional @Me.com email ID)

Since FaceTime came out in Lion you can also "register" it with use with FaceTime

The same goes for Messages App in Mountain Lion and "Registering" for iMessages (this can also be done from an iPhone or iPad).

In registering for an @mac.com name you were asked for an Email address not already linked to an Apple ID for Verification and Password Recovery purposes.

The Registration Process effectively "Hard Coded" the two emails (your one and the new @mac.com one) together.

Although I never registered for MobileMe (even Trials needed a Credit card for the 60 Days and Active deactivation of the Trial and I was always fearful I would forget) but I am presuming the same was true there - Linking the registering email with the @Me.com name.

At the .Mac Service to MobileMe change over those people who had paid for .Mac accounts were offered the ability to Link the @mac.com name with the @me.com name.

This effectively create one account with two names (either name would retrieve emails to either name or you could login with either name to iTunes) with one Password.

The same is now true if you use one existing Apple ID to create an iCloud ID

I found this out by linking my External-to-Apple Email ID to my iCloud ID as I created the iCloud ID.

I can log in to iTunes, App Store and Apple Support Communities (As I am registered here) and access the same details. (Similar to the @Mac.com and @me.com linking).

The Apple ID page suggests that some people can Change their Apple IDs

This certainly does not work for @Mac.com, @me.com and linked IDs such as mine.

The My Support Profile Login page will take you to some things you can change about your info regarding Apple Support Communities.

It takes you here and looks like this.

Your Nickname as it is called here cannot be changed.

On Previous Visits I have used this page to change the email used by the Support Communities to notify me of new posts.

As you can see it cannot be edited on my current visit and the Nickname cannot be edited.

So...

The Apple ID itself cannot be deleted.

The Alias or Nickname used to Post also cannot be changed (Or deleted)

Other Aliases

With @Mac.com and MobileMe you could register for Family Accounts

These were master IDs with Alias accounts as they were called that could be set up as well (about 5 was the max).

Realistically they were more like Associate Accounts.

These cannot be deleted either.

Expanding the Frequently Asked Question section of this page show you can resurrect some of the older types of Apple ID when registering one for iCloud (it seems @me.com names from MobileMe that lapsed)

To be clear

An @me.com name is an Apple ID. It is not just an email associated with it.

Apple IDs of any sort cannot be deleted.

Apple Support Communities "Aliases" or "Nicknames" (Posting names) also cannot be changed.

In some Apple IDs the linked email can be changed (such as @mac.com names issued during MobileMe as iChat names)

AIM do something similar

They did once say a Name was "for life".

However about 5 or 6 years ago now they started working through what they considered to be Unused Accounts and releasing back in to general use.

Every 3 months or so many people would experience issues with logging in to AIM

This was when AIM were removing these Unused names from People's Buddy lists on the AIM Servers.

This was more drastic at that time as there were a lot of names to work through. Nowadays the numbers are smaller.

AIM still allow to create as many Names as you want using the same Verification and Recovery email address.

This can contribute to the issue above as can people giving up using AIM (not to mention those that cannot use it any more)

I really hope this makes things a little clearer.

Hi there,

I have two Apple accounts. One for a Gmail account and one for a Me account. On my iPhone, the primary account is my Gmail account, but I want to completely move everything from that account onto the Me account, and make it the primary account, so I haven't got an unnecessary account on my iPhone.

Reason why I'm enquiring about this is because my iPad is registered on my Me account and my iPhone on the Gmail account, and I want them to both be on one account in order to stop confusion.

Thanks

Hi,

On the iPhone it is simply a question of removing the current Apple ID listed in the iCloud settings and the iMessages settings and replacing it with the one you want to use.

Hi,

I have some what of this same issue. When I sign into iTunes or any apple thing, my ID is ---------------@gmail.com. I would like to change it to ---------------@me.com ("-----" represent actual name). I already have a me account, i think every apple ID already has one, but I would like that one to pop up instead of the gmail one. How do I change it or can I?

Hi,

I have an Apple ID that I have had for years that is in fact an email account for a dial up internet service I once used.

I linked this to my iCloud ID when I create my iCloud Account.

I can use either name in iTunes, iCloud, signing in here at Apple Support Communities, and with the App store.

Once I am signed in then the Account shows me the same Dial up account name (except when I sign in here which shows me my Posting Alias.)

So on my computer in System Preferences > iCloud I list at @me.com version.

In Mail, Contacts and Calendars I list both (the older Dial-up account is still a valid email address I can fetch Mail from) but I use the @me.com name to get my iCloud Mail.

I have two iPhones and one uses the @me.com name for the iMessages account and the other uses the older Dial-up ID.

It seems iMessages treats the names as different Names/IDs at this point.

Is this the way your two IDs are connected together ?
