About the little scrollbar arrows...

...is there any way to get these back in Mac OS X Lion? Or do I need to downgrade to Snow Leopard just get these seemingly trivial but for me necessary things back?

Lion as a whole is a fine thing but this particular problem doesn't swing with me. Apple could just as well have left the option in the Preferences and I have no idea why they decided to remove it altogether. Not very intuitive IMO.

I work as a graphic designer and use Photoshop every day. Many files contains hundreds of layers and I really need fine control over the layers- list. Without the arrows things have increasingly become horrible, it seriously messes up my workflow. Yes, I can use the trackpad but that isn't the optimal solution for me since I use a Wacom tablet. Every time I need to bump up a few layers I automatically use the tool I have in my hand, i.e mouse or pen and it's really hard to pinpoint a specific layer many times. It's extremely annoying so I wonder if anyone know how or if there's a possibility of getting the arrows back?

Removing scroll bar arrows was one of the many pointless nods (so-called 'natural scrolling' being another, Launchpad a third, and so on) to Apple's fascination with iOS devices where such things have no purpose.

Rest assured, once the usability reports start flooding in they will —quietly when no one's looking — add them back.

I'm not taking bets on how many updates we'll have to wait, but let's hope its before 10.7.5, eh now, Apple... 😉

So many usefull things disappeared with Lion

I've found that attempts to be humourous on this forum regularly backfire.

Some people read too quickly, others seem to insist on misunderstanding no matter how many times they read something, and yet others (they know who they are) are just out to pick a fight whenever they can.

Still, I thought it was funny! 😀

Just adding my voice to this conversation. Like the OP, I use a Wacom to pretty much navigate my entire dual-screened 27" iMac. When working in Photoshop, those arrows are crucial for specific movements through 15-50 layers on a photograph. Plus the scrollbars are so much smaller now, I have to slow down and meticulously move the arrow over it to scroll up and down. One of the first preferences I changed was having them as always showing. But arrow keys are useful in something as basic as a Skype text chat. Trying to use a trackpad to scroll up through text causes it to jump through whole blocks of it. The arrow keys is a lot slower and more precise way to achieve this.

I too would like to have the arrows back. It's not the scrollbars or the scrolling in general, it's the missing ability to use the arrows to move in small increments such as one row at a time in a spreadsheet or navigate through layers in Photoshop. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COMPUTER AND AN IPAD. I LOVE MY IPAD. I LOVE MY MACBOOK. I DON'T LOVE APPLE'S INSISTENCE THAT THEIR OPERATING SYSTEMS BE MERGED. For everything I like about Lion, there is something I hate. I've never had this experience before when upgrading from one version of OS X to the next.

Please Apple, give us an option to have back the scroll arrows!!!

It´s absolutely necessary for many specific functions, such as navigating across thousands of songs in itunes, selecting an specific file inside a folder containing too many items or working with lots of layers in photoshop. Especially if the scroll button of your mouse is broken, this is so annoying that I´m almost sorry to have upgraded to Lion.

I have been in the "IT" world since before desktop computers came to be. I have never used a Windows box as my primary desktop, always Apple. This means that I have seen lots of changes in hardware and software; I've been through the transition to OS X; from time to time, I've had to give up favorite programs and features that "no longer worked". I do not believe I have ever seen a change showing less sensitivity to customer needs and usage than the removal of the scroll arrows. The narrower scroll bars I can deal with, but there are times when the lack of fine control the arrows gave makes me want to throw the machine through a window.

I do not believe that Apple any longer considers the kind of professional, production users who have been posting to this thread of importance.

I think what irritates me about this most is the fact that I am now presumably going to have to replace a perfectly good optical mouse, which is in fine working order and has served me well, with a new one with a wheel, not because of some exciting new feature that I desperately want to make use of, but because the operating system of my choice has now become less functional by dropping a function I liked and made regular use of. I fail to see that this is progress.

Bittersweet. I hate seeing problems with any new OS, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that is finding it difficult to be without the scroll arrows. Maybe there are 'work arounds', but there shouldn't HAVE to be on this. Do those arrows really take up that much space/speed that they had to be eliminated for an new bell or whistle? If you're listening, Apple, can't you please just put 'em back?

My visit with one of my local Geniuses resulted in an answer of "we're pretty much S.O.L." Along with Lion tossing the previous Microsoft Office tools and documents in the gutter, I was told all these things were stated in the 'Licesnce Agreement' type information that we should have read. Brings the episode of 'South Park' to mind, huh?

After reading all the discussion threads on this issue and talking to someone at Apple support I've decided to downgrade to Leopard. There does not seem to be any way around this problem for someone like me who cannot use a magic mouse and needs to scroll through documents in small increments to do my work efficiently. I'll upgrade again if they come up with something that enables me to do this in Lion. Very frustrating as Lion does have many good features but I have to be able to do my work!
