About the little scrollbar arrows...

...is there any way to get these back in Mac OS X Lion? Or do I need to downgrade to Snow Leopard just get these seemingly trivial but for me necessary things back?

Lion as a whole is a fine thing but this particular problem doesn't swing with me. Apple could just as well have left the option in the Preferences and I have no idea why they decided to remove it altogether. Not very intuitive IMO.

I work as a graphic designer and use Photoshop every day. Many files contains hundreds of layers and I really need fine control over the layers- list. Without the arrows things have increasingly become horrible, it seriously messes up my workflow. Yes, I can use the trackpad but that isn't the optimal solution for me since I use a Wacom tablet. Every time I need to bump up a few layers I automatically use the tool I have in my hand, i.e mouse or pen and it's really hard to pinpoint a specific layer many times. It's extremely annoying so I wonder if anyone know how or if there's a possibility of getting the arrows back?

Just adding another voice of support! The loss of the scroll arrows is by far the SINGLE WORST thing about Lion. I went straight from Tiger to Lion, and what a shock! As a scientific writer and editor, I routinely have to scroll through Word documents and PDFs that are several hundred pages long, and the lack of arrows is greatly reducing my productivity. As others have noted, it really looks like Apple no longer cares about people who are trying to use Macs to do serious work.

@mulligans missus ... What a bunch of hooey and a most unhelpful answer. A few years ago I bought a MacBook with 10.5 ... when 10.6 came out, I upgraded. Meh. Nothing to write home about. Then the 10.6.3 update crashed my harddrive! Before I got it back up, the laptop was stolen ... So I bought a used MacBook that had 10.4.11 ... very stable and did what I needed it for it to do. There were only a few things that I missed from 10.5 but they weren't important. I recently bought a new MacBook Pro with 10.7 installed.

Guess what ... I don't have the 10.6 disks to go back to and I suspect neither does Susan. So there is no "just reverting to SL" without having to go out and buy the disks. Besides, since the MBPro came with 10.7, I don't know if it will accept 10.6.

So Susan and I have both gone from a very stable 10.4.11 to 10.7.2 and what have we gained in productivity? I can't speak for Susan, but for me ... NADA! Not a thing! In fact, I'm using Camino to type this because Safari 5.1.2 is being finicky and won't log onto this site ... now how is that for irony? Eh? ... I can't use Safari to log onto an Apple website!

Safari has been another disappoint in Lion. It unloads pages in background and when I click on tab, I have to wait for the page to reload from the web ... well heck, if I wanted the page to unload I'd close the tab but Safari thinks it knows better than I do ... not fun when I'm on a slow connection and have to wait for the reload. It is still go goes blank on me. I get a white page and a spinning beach ball until it decides it ready. Patheic ... I'm using Safari less and less.

It's sad enuff that I have to put up with the dull, ugly monochrome ... but it's worse to put with poorly designed software.

As for the arrows, I keep seeing "I use the trackpad" ... The last desktop that I had didn't have a trackpad. So does Apple not care about them? I often use a mouse with my laptop ... so now I often have to come back to the trackpad to try to move just that tiny bit that the arrows used to let me do but I can't anymore because the uberlords decided they know what's best for me.

I think back to that 1984 commercial ... Apple has become Big Brother ... We need the woman with the sledgehammer to beat some sense into the folks at Apple before they start losing their base.

Glad to see you all solved the thread with your combined knowledge of Lion. Yawn. To the OP. back up your system and go back to Tiger if that's what you want. Fine, easy to do a d obviously suits your workflow, just don't count on taking your workflow past about 2010 because there will be no PPC updates nor system updates, nor security updates etc. etc. if you want to keep a computer up to date then update your system or buy an old cheap one that runs Tiger and save money.

I agree with all you'all. I found a way to get my pages scrolling slowly. Using you little mouse wheel. It makes pages scroll very slowly including inside any application's menus. I use a wacom tablet on my right hand a an apple mouse on my left. It works great! Just don't move the mouse and the tablet pen at the same time. 😉

Untill they restore the arrows that is the only way I found to get what we had in 10.6

Just one more voice. I miss the scroll arrows, a lot, and really think the scroll bar itself is too small. Using the arrow keys works for some things but not all. So much to like about 10.7, but the lack of scroll arrows and skinny scroll bars are NOT one of them. They really messed up the ergonomics. And no I don't intend to buy a trackpad just to make it work right. Frankly I don't like trackpads or the new apple mice at all. Very difficult for many individuals to use, especially those of us with disabilities (minor or major) I also use photoshop and other graphic programs and the lack of precision control is disturbing.

Really hope Apple realizes they went to far and corrects this.

yes is only small thing to some. not all have full trackpads or can use mouse for scrolling properly. Scroll arrows were very big part of apple. would love them back but if no then just have to get on with things.

The issue as I understand it, is that the Apple platform is used by an extremely broad range of people, from casual users, to many and extremely varied types of content creators working across a wide range of fields using a vast range of applications. While a large proportion of desktop Mac users, especially casual (home) users and content consumers, will probably do just fine by buying a USB trackpad, there are some who actually do need the option for scroll arrows in part of their precision manipulation of large documents. For example, in my opinion the horizontal movement of giant Excel spreadsheets is now just plain awful.

So, while the majority perhaps will do fine without scroll arrows, it seems wrong and arrogant to assume that all users must therefore not need them.

Or does 'Think Different' now mean that we have to all think differently the same?

As a Mac Pro owner with extended keyboard, scrolling mouse (okay for vertical scrolls but plays fast and loose with horizontal), large Wacom tablet and of course the stylus, I also don't want to have to now also buy a plug-in trackpad as yet another input device to take up space on my already cluttered desk.

I agree with you, adream. The alternatives are Linux or Windoze. Or any pre-Lion Mac too I suppose. If this trend to turn my Mac Pro into an iPad continues then that's what I'll be thinking too. I will add that I love my iPad. But I love building new content on my Mac Pro even more.

Please, you nice folks at Apple: we're not asking that scroll arrows be made compulsory. We only ask that they be an option. At least until a bigger number of us no longer need them. I've loved and bought Apple computers for 20 years because I've loved making content in an Apple operating system. This is the first time in 20 years that I am daily being irritated by something Apple.
