Is intego's virusBarrier X6 a problem with lion?

I have been having a number of problems with lion the only kexts I have are associated with intego's VirusBarrier X6. Has anyone noticed problems that are associated with VB X6? Anyone remove it and see improvement? Anyone do a clean install then install it and have a problem?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.7), 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB

I was going to say I could test VirusBarrier X6 on my older MacBook to see if I get the same problems as you, but that uses Snow Leopard and I don't really use it anymore. Plus you said it works just fine on that OS. And, from what Ive experienced with Intego so far on Lion on my new MacBook, it works great. Sorry I can't help you much further than that.

note to others: I have also tried ClamAV but I think it's true 'you get what you pay for', cause it slowed my computer down when running scans. So far I havent experienced any of that with Intego. Call me smug or a stickler but I kinda want the best of the best when it comes to computers. That's why I own MacBook's. I'm thinking I'd rather pay for software because it works and it's the best, not download a program because it's a low-end freebie. Sorry ClamAV..

My experience is quite a bit different from yours, but it's really not a fair comparison as I compared them running Leopard on an iMac G5 and it was VirusBarrier X5. When I use the manual scanning capability of both applications they chewed up an almost identical and substancial percentage of the CPU, but when they are both used in the background "watch" mode I don't notice either of them.

I don't know anything about VirusBarrier X5, so I can't help you there. I only recently decided it's best to get antivirus on my Mac, because of the recent malware discoveries and because I share files with PCs on a regular basis. From my perspective, I'd rather not risk it anymore and just secure all my computers.

I'll see how the remainder of this trial goes with VirusBarrier X6. So far Im liking it a lot. I like the UI too.

@ThomasReed - I understand what humor is and his comment (and his follow up comment to mine) proves that it was not humor he was using but simply trying to be a jerk and he succeeded in that. Your comment about a dude in the bushes was humor and proved your point. I take constant time machine backups and have all my files backed up on my NAS at home so I'm not overly worried about losing any data. The only thing I use this for is surfing the web and editing photos and I have everything backed up.

@Tycoon24 - No need. I know Intego is the problem with the older MBP because a buddy of mine has a shiny new MBP (3 weeks old) and has Intego and like you has 0 problems so it's the older Core2Duo's and Intego and how they run on Lion.

@Jeff26 - I've done all that. Reset SMC. Reset PRAM, etc and it's still a problem. If I uninstall Intego completely (which I have tested twice) all of my problems go away so it is Intego.

I appreciate most everyone's comments. I'll see what Intego says and if they can't fix it

Backups only get you so far, especially if you only have one of them. For example, think about a photo you value highly but haven't looked at in a while. If that photo has been corrupted, how would you know? What if by the time you notice the problem a good copy is no longer in your Time Machine backup?

Admittedly, that's an extreme case that is not likely to happen, but it is possible. If your data is irreplaceable and important to you, you should add redundancy and archival to your backup system, as well as reduce the chances of corruption wherever possible by eliminating crashes.

Anyway, I think the point is adequately made, just trying to point out what may be a misconception about the safety of backups.

I suspect Intego Antivirus 6 is a problem for many systems. I installed it on my G5 Quad (2005 - still works well!), and suddenly would get crashes on full scan (kernel panic), and frequent (at least once a day) freezes that seems to be Safari related (not 100%): system would become unable to start of terminate tasks or threads. Arrow moved just fine, but eventually every thing would be the spinning beach ball of boredom. Hard restart required.

I actually found a repeatable sequence:

In Safari: browse to www.alliedelec.com

search for "littlefuse"

search within results for "3AG" hit return

Blammo. partial blue loading bar in Safari, nothing else works.

Uninstalled Antivirus V6, system no longer exhibits that behavior, and it's faster.

This problem does NOT occur on my MacBook Core 2 duo, nor on an iMac 24" (2010).

Not sure if it is related, but I was just on a thread about not being able to stream Netflix. Turned out to be V6 blocking cookies. Again, not sure if it is cookie related, but it must have been blocking something.
