Final cut pro x doesn't load projects on external hard drive

I have installed Final Cut Pro x. I save all of my projects on my external hard drive, and suddenly it has stopped working.

I load FCP and it displays, in the project library all of my projects on my external hard drive, and then dissappears! 😕

I have lots of projects and am really annoyed that I can't use them any more. I would really appreciate all of your help 🙂

It starts loading, and displays this

User uploaded file

My external hard drive is called Ralph docs. It is still loading the window.

Then the external hard drive disappears from the project library...

Then it disappears from the event library. 😠

I tried going into the external hard drive directly and opening the project from there... Nothing happens. I can play it if I do that, but not edit it in the magnetic timeline.

😢

Please help me! I have even reinstalled FCP twice but nothing.

FCP X does seem to have a problem when too many Events and media is in the Library. I reccommend one of three things.

First, you can get "Event Manager X" to take some of them "offline" temporarily when you're not using them.

http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/

Or you can cretae Disk Images to put stuff in for specific clients or whatever, and only mount the .dmg when you need access to those Events and Projects.

http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_x_managing_disk_image_martin.html

Finally, I recommend you create folders in the Project Library, and start putting projects in them, and closing them. That way, the Project Library won't try loading data from all the projects at once. If it's not in a folder, or if the folder is open, FCP X will load up all the data for all the Projects it can see and can be overwhelmed pretty easily.

I just wanted to add, i was having the same exact issue and as Guillaume - Trangoposted i removed/renamed some extranious files from the hard drive, but it did not work at first. However, I had an AVCHD video file from a canon camera at the root level of the drive that upon moving it into its own seperate folder, the drive returned to behaving as it always had in final cut x.

If you haven't yet experiment with files at the root level of the drive i highly reccomend it.

Worked like a charm for me. best of luck!

Do you know if this is true for folders named AVCHD and such aswell? 😕

Hello,

I'm not sure if my issue is the same problem. for day 1 FCPX has allways displayed my external hard drive in event and destinations like when you duplicate projects and tell FCPX where to go, not imac drive but external. however I pluged my external drive into another mac with FCPX and experienced some problems, but managed to duplicate the project onto my external.

now heres the problem, fire up FCPX with external pluged in from before computer started, it loads, screen appears, there is my exteral drive, then count to 5 and its gone. it then just shows the macs drive.

what is going on there???

Thanks

Hello Tom,

I am having a similar problem. I am not sure if they are related. I did post a question separately as well. I was not able to share my event (grayed out). Finally, I came across this thread in desperation. So, I renamed any files/folders that may be tricking FCP X into thinking my LaCie drive is a camera. Now, I have a number of clips in my timeline that say "Missing Camera." Am, I going to have to import, clip and edit them all again? Do you think that when I do get this resolved that I will be able to share again?

Thanks,

Meghan
