Free Pro-Sumer style AVCHD to FCPX work around:
Sorry if this is a repeat, I didn't see it yet in my readings. I'm buying Clip Wrap to re-package avchd the "right" way, and I've also had success pointing to the AVCHD file using "import from camera" in FCPX, but here is another simple workaround.
-Use imovie to create an imovie event, and "import files" into imovie from your AVCHD folder or directly form your camera if it's supported by imovie (many are)
-eveal the event in finder, and copy the new individual .mov clips onto your scratch disk or locally. I then erase the imove event completely since the individual .mov's are what I'm after.
-In FCPX, create an event, and "import from file"
-make sure to uncheck "create optimized media" or you will get that extra copy. Creat proxy media if desired.
It's a little messy, but it's free.
I was off on a few accounts above and it was way overly complicated (I'd pull it down)
I meant to say-
open imovie and import your footage at full size
close imovie and open FCPX
file/import/imovie events library (it only imports new events if it's already been done)
erase the imovie event
