Tenfourfox

We are still running Tiger on our MBP and we plan to continue to do so indefinitely.

We are also currently using Firefox 3.6.22. We know that Ff will eventually stop doing security updates for 3.6. and we'll have to go elsewhere for an excellent browser.

BDAqua has kindly tested Tenfourfox for me and said it works OK on an Intel Mac.

I read the FAQ on TFF's site ( the one at macupdate, since Floodgate, the real site? seems to be dead) which seem to indicate that it might work on an Intel Mac, but that it is not supported.

Is TFF providing security updates? since it's site, Floodgate is gone?

So -

- has anyone else used TFF on an Intel running Tiger successfully?

- and can I install it alongside Ff 3.6.22 or is that asking for trouble? (again, the FAQ's seem to warn against this but I'm not sure how it'll do on an Intel Mac) Is there a way to keep Ff 3.6 installed until I figure out if TFF works for me - is a SuperDuper backup with Ff3.6.22 enough or should I dup my Ff before installing TFF?

-which of the several versions of TFF should I download for my Intel MBP - the G3, G4, G5 - 6.0.1? or what??

Thanks to BDA for testing it for me - I just need more info before I proceed.

TFF is a port of the later, current versions of Firefox and it automatically contains all the security fixes that Firefox receives.

I plan to run version 7 as soon as a more advanced beta version stops disabling some vital Add-Ons.

For current versions, you really mean current and not just the 3.6.22 updates to v3?

Now, what do you think - TFF on an Intel MBP - which version of TFF - G3. G4, G5? You are running it on a PPC as supported, I need it for my Intel MBP.

Sure, that's the whole point of TFF, to allow Tiger users to continue taking advantage of the advances of Firefox. Currently I'm on 6.0.1 and the beta version of 7 is already out.

Sorry, I have no opinion on Mac-Intels, as I don't plan on ever getting one. The cost of upgrading my software would be absolutely prohibitive, and some essential custom software initially procured by a client at a cost of tens of thousand of dollars would be irreplaceable and unupgradable as it requires Classic.

Here's the outline of my system:

2.5 GHz Power Mac (PPC) G5-Quad; 16GB RAM; mutant, flashed 550MHz nVidia GeForce 7800GTX, 1,700MHz 512MB VRAM; ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D LP SCSI card; Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 boot drives; Spotblight, Dashboard and Time Machine permanently disabled; dual 22" CRT monitors; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet via wired Ethernet; FW flatbed scanner; 2 SCSI scanners (one tabloid-size transparency scanner and a film scanner); various internal & external HDs; FW Epson 2200 and Ethernet Samsung ML-2850ND printers; 2 X Back-UPS RS 1500 XS units.

I thought I'd never get one either, but our Powerbook 170 is a bit slow, though still used and on System 7.5. Replaced that with the MBP for photo work. My beloved G4, which most folks here are sick of hearing about, died last year - power block just gave up, BDA suspected capacitor (?) failure and it no longer was worth it to throw money at it - I waited a year before biting the bullet, which is to say, getting an iMac!

Yes, the whole point for TFF for Tiger users...but I am in the minority of Tiger users on an Intel Mac. I wish I could contact the Doctor who designed TFF and ask his opinion before I screw up Mr H's MBP with the wrong version, since none really is supported.

I found this interesting:

Lion - good god. I've just started to use SL on the iMac, thank heaven for Rosetta.

BDA, so you left me with the idea that G4 on TFF is my best bet, but there are 2 G4 options - which? And why that one - any reason for your choice? And which version of TFF - 6.0.1 can support WOT and NoScript??

Which version did you test for me anyway?

PS I found the thread I cited above interesting...

Hehehehe…😀 no, not an acronym. It's "cab" as in taxi cab, a cab that shuttles you around the Internet, hence its yellow taxi cab icon. It is and has always been a German application.

Turns out I tried TenFourFox G5 version.

And it worked! 🙂

So should I go for that one? I had wondered since (I'm guessing) the G5 build would be aimed at the fastest computer - but I know naught about any of this. My G4 was a dual processor, but I think the G5s were way faster?

So, I'll download the G5 format of TFF. Makes it easier, there are no choices for the G5 - but still choices on which version - version 5? I think that one still supports AddOns and proceed from there.

Mr H has been complaining that Ff 3.6.22 is slower than usual on the MBP but I don't know why. I'm still using that on the iMac - waiting for Ff 7 which supposedly is coming out end of Sept and supposedly is leaner than v4, 5, or 6. But again, I'm talking through my hat on this. 😉

Well, I only tried v 5 so far.

v5 of TFF?

Again, thank you so very much for being willing to test these things out for me on your Mac before I do so on Mr H's.

I am waiting for v7 for Ff for the iMac as I said above.

I'll go for v5 of TFF on the MBP since it appears to be AddOn compatible and perhaps later v's aren't - not sure I am reading this correctly elsewhere. I did find that article linked above interesting which explains from the horse's mouth the relation of TFF to the Ff profile and shows what you need to keep - I expect I wouldn't delete Ff anyway just in case I needed it.
