iDVD on Lion OS X

I am a brand new mac user. I recently purchased a macbook pro with Lion OS X. I am trying to burn a movie to disk and cannot locate iDVD on my computer. Does it not come with Lion? I have iMovie, iphoto, etc. I tried to locate it in apps for downloading and there is nothing available. I have been told that I should not need to get iLife as everything else is on my system and "they" believe that the iDVD should be on my system. Any ideas as to where I can find it on my computer or whether or not I am supposed to download it separately? Thanks.

I was reading this with interest as I found the same with my mine and my brother's MBP. In the end, we weighed up the cost of buying Roxio Toast and a good quality DVD Authoring program and came up with - iLife '11 Retail Package. We bought one each and now have the disks for good. And it was cheaper and more compatable than a combination of others and I also got iWeb back which is great as well.

Did the iLife '11 disc include iDVD? I've found some online, (like this one) but none mention iDVD. Is it included as part of iMovie '11? I've read that it is on some, but not on others. If so, I don't have it on my late 2010 Macbook Air which came with iLife '11 installed.

In any case, I was able to install iDVD from my iLife '09 disc and it updated and is working fine. It would be nice to have a "new" copy/disc/download though instead of going through this kind of fuss.

I don't think they sell it on the App site with iDVD so you really just need to look around and you will find the boxed set at places like this

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-iLife-11-New-Retail-Box-Single-User-MC623Z-A-/3 90390121364?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae5108394#ht_2913wt_809

I bought two new unopened sets for about $30 each and yes they included iDVD and iWeb. iWeb is great and if you are running your site through an independant server it still works great. iDVD is an outstanding program and the only reason I can think of that it was dropped is that Apple are slowly doing away with optical media. Internet system installs, App Shop purchases, no DVD slots in MacAirs etc.

The version of iLife '11 on the ebay link is MC623Z/A and the one I linked to on Amazon is MC625Z/A. So the ebay version has iDVD and iWeb? Good to know...but how confusing.

As mentioned I already have iDVD on an iLife '09 disc...but for others that follow, that info may help.

Understood about optical media going the way of the 8 track, but some folks are still asking for DVD's, sooo...

Cheers for that though Pete.

Are you sure it came with iLife? Note difference in marketing. Apple sells Mac's with ELEMENTS of iLife - not with the bundle. It used to bundle with iLife and say it is with "iLife preinstalled". If it said with iLife preinstalled than you should be able to win legal dispute and Apple would be forced to ship missing apps from iLife. The wording changes everything.

I know it since I am with Mac OS X since Jaguar times when it was like that. After few system ugrades over years and new hardware purchases I noticed that it is not iLife installed anymore, but few apps from iLife.

When I say that my late 2010 Macbook Air came with "iLife '11" I mean that iPhoto '11, iMovie '11 and GarageBand '11 were preinstalled. I can't recall if Apple advertisied it as "iLife '11" at the time but that's still how Apple is marketing the three products...and how they were sold on disc before they discontinuned making them.

I really don't think that the missing iDVD application is worth any sort of litigation. 😉

If you look at the retail version of iLife '11 from Apple, you will find that it it includes only three Apps. iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband. That is what is also preinstalled on new Macs with Lion. There would be no grounds for a legal challenge, that is silly. If you want iDVD and/or iWeb, you need to find and purchase a copy of iLife '09 or better still iLife 'll with all five Apps included. They are still available if you look around but are no longer the retail version on sale from Apple.

Sorry, but that is short sighted view. It is not worth litigation if you use only electronic media for your authoring. As I mentioned before in some places in this world people still use DVD players and they do not need to be geeks with access to YouTube to get familiy movies. Same with Internet. That also pertains elderly people.

I have such people in my origin region so please do not bet on your opinion. Saying "not worth it"you discriminate people. This trend become very popular.

i do author movies and i do post them on YourTube as well, but for some I need to author on DVD. DVD recording software is not authoring software - there is big difference in authoring and writing to DVD.

Okay. Good luck with that. 🙂

iDVD has been dropped. It is not my fault. Go argue with Apple. You my friend are not understanding the discussion. Those of us in this small thread also want to use iDVD and have got off our backsides to find how to get hold of a copy and you came in with nonsense about 'our opinions'. It is not our opinion, it is our solution if you bother to read properly! If you are too lazy to find a copy of iDVD then buy another Authoring program for a higher price. Otherwise call Apple and tell them about it, not us. We are only users like yourself and have offered you a way to get back iDVD.

If you look carefully at forums and at content of that DVD then you may notice that it had iDVD. You may open installer in advanced mode and play with checkboxes. Same method is used when you instal iDVD (only) from iLife '09.

Which is what I said earlier in this thread and why I posted how to do that here:

Where it was dropped from? From Mac? Sure. Not from iLife '11. And i think it was mistake

Pete stop offending people.that's rude. Perhaps you do not read carefull and start becoming rude. I do not have problem with installing it. I run network of Apple computers for small business I know quite a few tricks and have stack of Apple, Adobe and Quark software. I have installed iDVD, but i have problem with harsh policies and.

You did not offere me anything. Check my posts, i have helped people with proper and practical advice probably more than you did.

Not true. You suggested that iLife comes with Macs - it is wrong. Read Apple marketing offer carefully. Where do you see that Mac comes with iLife? It says that Mac comes with three applications (out of more) that are part of iLife '11.

Again go to the Apple Store and take a look. I have spent time to understand this when I called Apple support to get free copy of iDVD (like some did) and did not get, but i got very polite help with answering question: is it safe to install iDVD from iLife '09 on fresh computer with Lion and parts of iLife '11? (there is baseof mandatory libraries that have to be installed and I was worried of some conflicts). The answer from tech dept. was that it is okay. So I installed and tried to give you guys here on forum advice on how to do that. Unforunatlely i seee many folks here feeling insecure or in some maniacal state of Apple being holy grail in his actions while there are legitimate scenarios that it isn't (and yes I did sent feedback... many times).

I simply told you that iDVD is no longer being made. It is no longer being advertised as part of the iLife '11 Suite that is sold

http://www.apple.com/ilife/

I am not being rude, you are the one denying that iDVD is not being sold any more.

I cannot bother checking your other posts as there are too many polite people looking for help here.

Claims you make such as

Maciej Samsel wrote:

are totally unfounded. iDVD was dropped from iLife '11 as was iWeb. Google all you like. It is a fact. You think it was a mistake, I believe it was a mistake, but that will not make Apple bring it back.

So please read the posts properly, stop being so rude and understand that I did not come here to be in some sort of 'competition' for point scoring, and I was not even answering you in the first place.
