iDVD on Lion OS X

I don't know if the older iLife version (09) is still fully compatible with Lion - I have not tried that since I have the iLife 11...... if anyone has tested that, please post the results.

You can install iDVD from iLife '09 on Lion - that question was resolved by Apple tech dept on call I had with them. That also means you can mix this app with iLife '11 (well iDVD in iLife '11 is the same as one in iLife '09 as they say).

Compatible or not. I have full iLife '09 running on my other business Mac that was upgraded to Lion.

I think that older installers needed Java. Java on Lion is not installed and enabled by default so you should do it first (Java manaagment is in "Utilities" or via stadard Lion Launchpad). Some claimed that older installers required Rosetta as they were not "Universal". I doubt it and someone really patient did research and said it was rather Java issue.

You may give it a shot. I have iLife '09 running on Lion on one of my Mac's. However iLife '09 had already problems on Snow Leopard which it did not on Leopard. One of examples is that some transition work in iMovie causes crash of the application and it was predictable/easy to reproduce. I learned to avoid that. I guess there may be more things of this "quality".

Appreciate it, but I have iLife 11 installed, so I wouldn't be going back to v. 09.

As I posted earlier I installed iDVD on my iMac and my Macbook Air, both running Lion OS X 10.7.3 from an iLife '09 disc and it works perfectly. Otherwise I'm running iLife '11 for everything else.

iDVD still there but impossibly slow.

iDVD from iLive09 is still there after upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard (and Leopard previously). However it is nearly disfunctional. Encoding and burning a 1min demo movie took 40min (!!!). A 20min demo reel took a whole night. The program was unresponsive during this time. If I wanted to stop the encoding I had to force quit iDVD.

So for all practical purposes it cannot be used any more.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems with iDVD. I have it installed on my iMac as well as my Late 2010 MacBook Air (both running OS X Lion 10.7.3) and it works perfectly. Plenty of other folks here (and on other threads and forums) are using it without any problems as well.

It sounds like something specific to your setup may be causing issues. Are you running the latest version of iDVD (7.1.2)? Is it possible other programs are affecting it - programs running in the background like anti-virus software, etc.? Have you tried fully uninstalling it and reinstalling it?

Just got off the phone with Apple.... iDVD is no longer supported and now discontinued....... that really ***... to have a superdrive and no real way of utilizing it.... poor form apple... Steve would be ******!

iDVD is still supported, just no longer included. If you can get your hands on the iLife '11 suite (the one which includes iDVD) from ebay or Amazon, etc. then it will still worl on your Mac. As much as I liked iDVD I must admit that I have now almost forgotten about it after having used Roxio Toast for all my burning needs. But one day I may find a project where iDVD will be useful again.

What do you use then to produce customized themes, menus and chapters? There is no equivalent I know of and the stock menus in Toast are simply too amateurish and simplistic - but it's an excellent app to burn with.

That would be the time when I went back to iDVD. I worry more about passing on content these days and can't be bothered with themes. Amateuristic and simplistic is fine for what I do, therefore my love of Toast, but a I said if I ever need to utilise the great features of iDVD then I would use it. That is why I have kept it for. I am not disagreeing, which is why I told the poster where they may get it from, but my work is not in Video Production.

I may be way late on this thread and I am sure you sorted this now? But thought I'd share what happend to me in case it helps.

I simply saved iDVD from my old MB to an external drive, then moved it onto the new MBP.

However, when I tried to open it, message told me it couldn't find the themes. So, I located these in the library/application support folder on OLD MB and copied these to the same location on the new MBP. This is now working fine :-)

HATE that they deleted it! But, all OK now. Hope this helps!
