What makes you so sure it needs the A5 chip?

From a pure marketing standpoint, it makes perfect sense that Siri works only on 4S. Were it not for Siri, there would be very little incentive - almost none - to upgrade from 4 to 4s. But that's not the same thing as saying it can't physically be done, or it needs a particular chip to do it.

In fact Siri is simply a clever extension of technology that's been around for years, so it's more of a breakthrough in imagination than a breakthrough in technology (and no less worthy for being that).

I'll bet my proverbials that there will be some work around or fix which, though not to Apple's taste, enables users of 4 or 3GS handsets to engage with Siri.

Th eonly reason it wouldnt work on the iPhone 4, is because Apple dont want it too, the iPhone 4 has plenty of processing power for an app like that basically voice recognition and internet searches.

As Jonathan said it did work on 3GS and 4 untill Apple bought it, another ploy to push people into upgrading.

Look at iTunes there is no reason whatsoever that the new iTunes shouldnt work on older Mac OS's other that Apple dont want it too = Upgrades

It work on windows XP which is a lot older

I've had Siri working on my iPhone 4 for months now-in what universe does Apple think it is appropriate to render my Siri app on my iPhone 4 inoperable, just because they are releasing a newer version for the latest iPhone 4S?

Is Apple actually out to annoy all the existing customers like me, with Siri working on their current iPhones? Nice work, Apple....I'm very impressed...

Submit your complaints to Apple feedback directly. They are useless here on the forums.

No, they are out to market a new product that has some hardware improvements. If they allowed Siri to run on all other devices, would anyone buy the new iPhone? Of course not! They would just get the free iOS 5 upgrade.

I couldn't agree more David with your comments, as much as I am a solid fan of Apple, I am not a fan of the vicious ways in which they force their users to upgrade. It is close to being quite unethical, especially this situation! I hope that they get enough people to call their bluff on this one & that they start making changes to these sneaky upgrade requirements. Do you know what I mean? ;D

To d6d24r94 if you cannot answer questions without being a smart *** - probably better you just stay quiet,

This question may have been asked countless times (though I doubt it as Siri has only very recently been announced) - but probably not by this questioner.

For your information I did a search for the answer - and guess where I was taken - HERE.

I actually just scored an app called vokul yesterday for 2.99, it runs on 3GS or anything relesed after that. iPods and iPads alike. It does not connect out to the internet to function, but can do some similar functions to Siri. As voice commands go it's alright, mostly centered around sending text messages and music management. Point is that the A4 processor can handle the load. The text message portion was pretty good, though I imagine that with external servers it could be better.
