LOL :)
Over protective... Me?! I am a "real" iPad 1 user and speak as a peer alongside other users who are experiencing the frustration of being presented with the message "upgrade to iPad 2 because your iPad 1 is now obsolete" -- who do you represent Dah-veed?
On that topic, I could use exactly the same words to describe how you are placing yourself in the firing line here, supporting Apple's corporate position :p where is their answer on this topic? Even you had to personally request the web site change... poor little Apple needing you to be their big brother?
A very wise man once said to me "stop being the over protective parent/older sibling and let them answer for themselves" -- I strongly suggest you take that sage advice.
Thanks for speaking on their behalf anyway -- someone has to play devil's advocate here, it would be very one-sided if it weren't for wonderful users like yourself.
Thanks for protecting me.😎
@bouzoukikid: no problemo ;) Unfortunately the most protection we've got here is the moderators who protect us from saying too much that strays beyond the terms of use for the forum.
I think we've hit a nerve at framing this as the "thin edge of the wedge" that is driving the iPad and iPad 2 feature-sets apart -- something that will happen more and more, perhaps an interesting time and mannor for it to begin.
someone has to play devil's advocate here
Uh oh, he found me out. 😁
You know that we go through this every time there is a new version of anything; iOS devices, Macs, OSs. And the Hosts let one or two of the threads collect all of the complaining and start removing any new ones that get started. If you do a search you will find threads that are hundreds of complaining comments long. Look for the one for the night the iPad 2 went on sale in the online Apple Store, its huge.
Maybe I should try to help out... The iPad 1 complainers have a bit of momentum!
Apple did a great job releasing iOS 5 and really need to keep up profits to pay rent and water bills and things like that.
They put a lot of creative energy into making excellent products and this is how we thank them?
Whining about features that probably don't even work on obsolete hardware.
The technology world moves very fast these days, if you buy Apple you expect to be locked-in, so grow up... earn some money and upgrade to iPad 2 if you don't like it.
Apple needs all the money they can get to turn around their poor environmental record -- and start to clean up their manufacturing facilities in China.
So -- throw money at Apple everyone!
I'd be interested to read that, will have a look Dah-veed
and start to clean up their manufacturing facilities in China.
Apple does not own any manufacturing facilities in China. Apple's products are made by the same companies that make HP's, Dell's etc products.
Apple does own a battery manufacturing company in Japan however. Very clean. Very efficient. The batteries work great in Apple products.
OK -- as I was typing that what came to mind was they are, by extension, "our" manufacturing facilities through outsourcing.
One of the many roles I play as a systems architecture includes sustainable corporate procurement -- I know how hard it is to know what really happens at the coal-face, although, given low production costs, we actually do know what has to happen.
Anyway, my point is, the more money we funnel to Apple, the more money they will have to pass on to the manufacturer to provide healthy conditions.
So -- I'm going to stop complaining and start saving up to buy a pallet of iPad 2s.
Test
To all the people who say I shouldnt be moaning, yes I should and this is why!
Firstly 529 pounds is alot of money, if I spent that on a laptop I would expect 3 years of it being up to date!
Secondly, apple can normally get away with leaving big features out, like better notifications because it's attention to detail on little things was so good! Such as gestures! Such as pinch to zoom! It's the little this we expect that makes usability so good that we accept big things are missing, who wants 20 million ports, if the soft ware is good! Gestures in io5 are integral, and we believed that we were going to get them
Thirdly, the lies, don't make us believe we're going to get it and then we don't, tell us from the off your going to separate iPad one and two, I don't want to upgrade now, iPad 3 is already going into production, but. Feel as if my iPad is now rubbish, when I know it would be awesome! Most people with apple are on a two year upgrade cycle, why would they mess us all about
And finally, I bet they don't change it, the more you think about this, the more the economists, the analysts and the shareholders desires here are to blame, the iPad one is too good, it has the stuff you want, the iPad 2 is an update, and I bet the three will refine it a bit more, apple are now limited by battery and chip heat dispersion technology, however my theory is to drive sales, only software can now be used to create desirability
But, I would still upgrade anyway apple! Stop forcing me, play fair please :)
Well I really wish I had investgated more before upgrading my iPad 1 as I was really looking forward to using the well publised multi touch gestures, not only those but also the ability to edit picture which is also missing from the iPad 1! Strange that the picture editing is on the iPhone 4 with the same processor so oviously nothing to do with obsolete hardware. At the end of the day it now just looks like a con to get people to move off the iPad 1 and buy a version 2. Maybe the Office of Fair Trading should investigate this and the misleading information on the Apple website.
Mousemechanic,
You couldn't have investigated further, as it was stated in Apple's own text that multitouch gestures were available to the iPad. So, in truth, you did nothing wrong. They falsely advertised this as a general feature only to later on change their wordings in the web site.
I would LOVE for someone at Apple to convince me why my feeling that I'm being completely and utterly f#%ked over by having perfectly technically viable options turned off because I bought my two iPads less than a year ago! I hate this sort of greedy abuse.

Not going to happen. Apple doesn't respond here.
Apple do not seem to respond even when you contact them through official channels.
