iTunes 10.5 does not load shared library files

Since today's update to iTunes 10.5 from 10.4.1. iTunes can no longer access the shared music library I have on my iomega NAS disk. It sees the disk and lists it as a shared library, but when I click on the library it goes into an endless loading cycle. In the past it might take a minute or so to load the library, but since the update, iTunes never actually does load it.

There is no error message, not even an operation time-out. I can't see anything rrelevant in the console. It just goes on for ever trying to load the shared library.

It was loading the shsred library just fine until this evening when the update downloaded.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem.

My setup is a Freecom Dual Drive Network Center NAS running iTunes Server. Both my Windows Vista PC and Mac OSX Leopard Macbook have the problem in iTunes.

I can see the NAS under the shared menu on the left but when clicking to view the music, I get the file list for a split second then it reverts back to my local music library.

Extremely frustrating!!

Is this Apple or the NAS manufacturers which should deal with this?

I wonder if the folks that blame Apple for the problem would have known what to do if they release a comment annoucing that they were dropping the support for iTunes functionality?

Since most of us are lost when it comes to network communication it is very doubtful any of us would have picked up on it.

Like most humans, they try to immediately Point the Finger of Blame or PFB, in the easiest direction.

I am stuck too but it is not like they dropped the Finder, something that the majority uses, without telling anybody.

I put more onus on the mfg'ers of the NAS's for not previewing the update when it came around.

Oh well, anyone figured out to make the LG products work?

This was meant as general response and not just to the above user's post.

There are a few flaws with your argument.

One, it's Apple's change. They *should* have notified everyone, yes.

Two, it doesn't JUST affect NASes. It affects Home Sharing across computers with no NAS involved.

Therefore, yes - it is Apple's problem. If it works in version X, but not X+1 - Apple needs to fix it. The "easiest direction," in this case, is the correct one to point that finger in.

Good point NewOldG3, if it affects a general set of connection requirements there should be important warnings published.

However, at the risk of sounding like an Apple apologist, since I am completely ignorant of network technology, I still think PFB is beyond my scope. And judging from the complete lack of knowledge of most posters here, they have no idea who or what to blame.

In my case, I purchased the NAS after the Lion update was officially released. I do admit that this is almost a chicken-n-egg situation since, we as consumers, have two suppliers affecting our equipment.

Unfortunately, Apple made a change in 10.5 that does not work with the protocols of the netwok handshake with most existing NAS units. While some manufacturers have updated their interface, others such as D Link are still working on this. While not having exact specifics, this sometimes happens when specifications are loosely followed and then one player decides to strictly adhere to a standard. The fix for now, as mentioned previously here , is to downgrade to iTunes 10.4 That has worked very well on all of my PCs. It would have been nice for Apple to do some regression testing before finalizing 10.5 or at least send out a warning to users and NAS manufacturers of the impending issue,
