win7 x64 can't install iTunes 10.5
Windows 7
Not sure about this, but try repairing than unistalling all apple/bonjour and the quick time update, delte that temp folder contents, install without your device plugged in.then update windows with at least sp1, I think their might be some updated installer programs included in that. Worked for me with only sp1 and microsoft visual c++ 2008 x86 and microsoft visual c++ 2008 x64, all 3 of the previously described updates had problems in some way before, and couldn't update them
New pre-installed copies of Windows may not be as clean as you hope or need, may have out of date or unwanted programs, utilities, maybe not the security suite you want.
Supersite for Windows had a list of things to do, first being doing a clean install of Windows yourself.
And even with Windows 7 SP1 DVDs now there are still a "few" updates that are needed. And Nvidia and AMD have newer drivers available. Microsoft drivers for graphic cards and others are not always welcome. My problems probably began when Windows added a driver for the iPod, but can't be sure... because even with all the backups and imaging, I too went for spending a full day to clean install.
Normally Windows Eaay Transfer would have saved me some time, but I had already wasted days with iOS 5 failures to reload.
One person had trouble until they updated their BIOS, so even there might be worth checking. I almost hoped there was a new one for me on my PCs.
Windows 8 Preview runs great, but not with the iOS 5 update. Otherwise I think iTunes 10.5.0 even runs better with Windows 8, but 'unsupported' of course. But also free.
One last, sometimes worth having a 2nd copy and dual boot Windows so you can test or use the one install JUST for this update and for future other times you need to test or do other things. And to run maintenance.
THIS WORKED FOR ME - THANKS WATSON 9809
"I downloaded Iobit Uninstaller from download.com
Ran it and uninstalled the Apple software updater.. it will fail but allows you to clear the registry entries. Do a restart and then run the ITunes 10.5 .."
I added SP-1 (not sure if thats needed) that didnlt help so went on and I did as Watson 9809 suggested installed the iobit uninstaller, (small standalone program) ran it looks like a modified version of windows uninstaller
It gave exact same error that windows uninstall program gave me (similar error to that I was getting when trying to also install I-tunes but then you can click through to access registry entries and I deleted all 72 of them for Apple software updater and then immediately reinstalled iTunes 10.5 ( I didn't reboot) , and BINGO it actually worked this time.
I had not uninstalled i-tunes it was still fully functional.
I hope this helps some of you out there, this has been many days of frustration. Confirms at least in my case that source was Apple software updater as this was the only change I made to allow installation to complete.
I've tried every suggestion here except a new install. I even spent two hours on the phone with Microsoft support (1-800-642-7676, in case you ever need it) and for what ails this nearly new Win 7 machine that prevents 10.5 from installing, THERE IS NO SOLUTION. Microsoft identifies the problem as being related to a MS update that won't install, but they haven't got a solution.
So what I'm left with is iTunes that won't read my iPod, and that won't install the 10.5 upgrade. It's a vicious circle, and I'm in a very, very foul mood. Didn't Apple bother to check for compatibility when they released 10.5? If so, why are so many people reporting virtually the same problem? Apple has been nonresponsive.
Hi!! I finally found a solution 😁
I´m Sure this one will work for everyone
-First you have to uninstall all Apple Software using Control Panel
-Download Unlocker Software from softsonic heres the link http://tinyurl.com/3e8gj2h
or google it
-Install Unlocker
-Go to Start and type this in search: %programdata%
-ProgramData window will open, so find apple folders
-Right click in each apple folder and find Unlocker in the options
-Choose Delete each apple folders (with unlocker program)
-Go to My PC, C Local Disk and find Program Files
-Look for Apple folders and Delete them (with Unlocker)
-Find a Folder (in Program Files) called Common Files
-Delete all Apple Folders (in common files) with Unlocker
- Empty your trash can (thats what i did)
-Reboot
-Install Itunes
Note: You can Reboot or use Safe Mode to use Unlocker if it doesnt work.
....and that's All
AFTER Days of frustration LOL
Good vibe, Love and Blessings for all!!

NOTE You will not loose your playlist or music
Good for you... I tried the same thing and, I must admit, had a small hope that it might work... but no. When I try installing iTunes after I deleted those folders with Unlocker, I get the same **** error messages as before ("Could not open key...").
Frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, I tried that uninstaller too, no luck.
The registry is all f'ed up with regards to permissions... and I've tried setting them as described by many, but there's always at least one key that won't let me update the permissions.
Thanks mattfromkirkwood - after unsuccessful downloading installing errors etc for a whole day, your solution fixed my itunes.
This is exactly the problem I am having. I don't know whether I should try uninstalling iTunes completely, or if that will then end up with my being unable to do anything. NOT A HAPPY BUNNY!!!
I just spent an hour or so on the phone with Apple support, uninstalled and tried to reinstall iTunes several times, and it still wouldn't install on my Win7 machine. I finally just said I'd call back later. So now, I have no iTunes at all, just a great big old library and devices I can't update.
The tech told me that when/if I get 10.5 in and working, installing the new OS onto my device will take about an hour, and my firewall and virus protection need to be off the whole time.
<shaking head in Silicon Valley>
Hope your listening apple, I got iPhone 3GS iPad iPods and iPhone 4s and I can't do anything because I got no iTunes. Spent over a week trying all these well intended fixes that people have been trying to find all to no avail. I have also spent an age trying to sort out windows updates, which in retrospect I shouldn't have bothered as iTunes has been the only thing that won't install. Spent an hour on the phone to your support, where the senior advisor seemed pretty embarrassed that he couldnt really offer me much advice as I had tried everything, it's not his fault at the end of the day. I'm far from happy and would like some feedback as opposed to being ignored...
For what its worth, after a fresh windows 7 install Im up and running. Regardless of wether it was a windows issue or apple issue, I tried every single trick I found here and elsewhere. I had all current windows updates etc.
I had been looking for a reason and day to reformat anyway, but surprised it took such an endeavor to get things working. I hope those of you who want to avoid a fresh windows install find a solution that works for you.
Hello Irish,
I am in the same boat. I have tried the guides provided here, whilst I am very grateful for all the efforts; no avail. Sadly whether it's iTunes or Win7, one or the other has gone belly up at some point - Marvellous.
Yup, I can't help sense a clean format is coming up, other than the above; my system has been running swell.
Now it's a matter of summoning the effort, although I can't help ask myself - is it worth it? I got to admit, ask me a few hours ago, I was swearing like a ***** when iTunes bombed for 25th time.
This is what I did to fix the issue
All those apple programs, remove them.
If you get an error, saying that Itunes can not install, I had that pop up as well
This is what I did to fix the issue.
First,
Turn off any program on your windows, THIS INCLUDES WIDGETS like clocks and weather! Close them all. IDK I got an error when I tried to uninstall bonjour which is also an apple program and you must uninstall it. The error said that bonjour is interfearing with the clock widget so I turned all widgets I had on my desktop, off.
To uninstall, I went into Programs and Features
Selected the Unisntall or Change a program.
Select the apple program you want to uninstall and uninstall them. if you couldnt uninstall the program like I did, then ...
This is what I did to go around that problem, YOU GET OTHER OPTIONS BESIDES UNINSTALL, LIKE CHANGE OR REPAIR. These options can come up when you select the program from the "uninstall or change a program" list and then right click it to see repair or change.
The repair option did nothing.
I clicked on the Change,
I saw a screen like this
CLICK REMOVE
And it will uninstall this **** program along with everything else.
Again, turn off all widgets like the clocks and weather buttons that pop up when you turn on your windows. AND REMEMBER TO CLICK "Change" instead of uninstall if you can't actually uninstall a program.
