Hello All

Well I too was having a **** of a time upgrading my Itunes to 10.5 version on my Dell XPS Windows 7 64 bit laptop so that I could update my Iphone 3 GS. I have tried so many things (except for the kitchen sink) in the past 8 days my head is still spinning hahaha since IOS 5 was released to no avail...that is until today. So all you Windows 7 64 bit laptop users, sit up and listen carefully ( as my desktop had no issues updating to Itunes 10.5 for some reason?, I willl try to figure that one out later) So what I did today was I downloaded the new Itunes 10.5 Windows 64 bit version (68MB I believe) and saved it to my HD. I then proceeded to CNET and downloaded a nifty and very excellent little program called Revo Uninstaller1.93 (free version). So here's the steps to follow as to what I did and it worked flawlessly without even doing a restart of your system, As follows OK: 1:) Download Revo Unistaller 1.93, 2:) Run the Revo exe file andthen open it. It will then open a window and populate it with all the programs installed on your Windows 7 device. 3:) Look for the program icon called Apple Software Update and click on it, it will then highlight. 4:) Then at the top of the window of the Revo Unstaller program you will see an icon called uninstall with an X on it, click on that it will will do a deep registry uninstall of ALL the Apple Update Software program with a 4 step instruction, follow those instructions. 5:) Then after the program runs another window will show a bunch of programs with some registry trees which are bolded. Check mark those bolded ones and select the delete button in the Revo Uninstaller window (lower right hand corner). After you are finished close the Revo Uninstaller program. 6:) Now go find your Itunes 10.5 exe file that you saved on your HD and run it, then presto...you should have Itunes 10.5 loaded onto your Windows 7 device. Now plug in your Iphone (3 GS orlater only) and or Ipad and it will automatically sync say there is an update for your device. Follow the usually steps from there. It worked for me so let me know if this works for all you other WIndows 7 64 bit laptop users that were having these same issue as Dirky3301 and I were. As for me, I am now happier than a pigin s**t. Thanks everyone for reading this as I hope this wasn't to boring or to indepth? Off to play some RAGE now on my laptop hahahaha.

hi everyone,

i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have tried the uninstall/reinstall/repair processes detailed here and it is still not working, then i am afraid you should prepare for a full OS rebuild.

there is just no way around it if you are unprepared to wait it out until apple releases a itunes version which does not have the compatibility issues (for instance 10.4.1) with the win7 64-bit OS.

i had no problems installing itunes 10.5 on my win7 32bit dell notebook, but faced all the issues with the win7 64bit desktop. the solution after a week of testing and playing doctor was what i figured had to be done after the 5th attempt -- rebuild the OS.

if you are doing this, please remember to note down all your preferred settings. otherwise, you will be adding significant stress trying to recall how to make you system work and feel like it currently does (ex the itunes 10.5).

and remember, when it reaches the point of maximum frustration and you feel like cussing out apple or throwing some peripheral across the room, say and prayer or count to 10.

God speed.

By now, it should be obvious that there is more than one problem that causes iTunes not to install or upgrade. Some problems are caused by left over files and registry entries from previous installations. These problems can be fixed by applying the various solutions in this and other threads. Essentially, uninstalling all of the Apple programs in the correct order via the control panel uninstall tool and then removing all of the Apple folders cleans up these left over files and entries.

However there is at least one problem that so far can not be fixed using these tips.

iTunes64Setup.exe actually installs a package of files that includes iTunes64.msi and AppleMobileDriverSupport64.msi (AMDS64). During the attempted installation AMDS64, the installer looks for a Windows file called C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_f9d6 2789100b9e9b\usbaapl64.inf. If it does not find it, the installation posts an error and initiates a roll-back.

For those who manage to get iTunes 10.5 installed but then find that their devices are recognized by Windows but not recognized by iTunes, this is because the AMDS64 failed to install.

I believe that both Apple and Microsoft are aware of this problem and that they are working to try and resolve the problem. My suggestion is that you reinstall iTunes 10.4 until a fix is provided. Those with IOS5 devices can get some partial relief by using iCloud to sync contacts, mail, appointments, etc. Believe me, I am as frustrated as everyone else but blaming either Apple or Microsoft at this stage is kind of silly and doesn't help get a solution.

It would easier if Apple announced they're looking into the issue. I firmly believe 80% of these posts would not be made IF Apple acknowledged the issue. Leaving everyone in the dark creates rumours that grow and eventually have a negative impact on the companies customer services. I cancelled my proposed purchase of the iphone 4s and went to HTC purely because Apple were keeping their corporate mouth shut.

I appears that what kept this as confused as it is is the fact that most of the problems are caused by left over files and registry entries which can be "fixed" by removing and reinstalling iTunes and associated Apple software. Why do files and registry entries get left over? There are various reasons including interrupted installations and deinstallations. And even more confusing, what is left over on each PC can, and by the looks of the various "fixes" in this stream are very different. That's why a "clean" install of iTunes is necessary. If you visit the Apple Support site or read the various posts above, you will see that Apple did recognize this problem and gave step by step instructions on how to remove and reinstall weeks ago. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

For the remaining problem(s) that appear to affect a much smaller number of users, a different fix is needed. I can tell you with a certainty that the issue is being worked on and hopefully a fix short of reinstalling Windows will be coming soon.

Have installed 10.5 with no error messages & although we can see all our music, etc cannot access iTunes or sync phones, the phone sync freezes on backup. Have been unable to update 3GS to ios5 & my husband cannot sync new 4s. Contacted apple who told us to uninstall & reinstall which did not work. Tried rolling back to 10.4 but iTunes has changed all our music files so will only open with 10.5. Using windows 7 64bit on a dell inspiron1. Anyone else had this problem?
