Try This:

This is what I did to successfully installed itunes 10.5 and everything works and my iphone is in good shape with ios 5.0...

Step #1) Go to Apple download and update your Quick time to 7.7 (do not update anything else cuz you can't)

Step #2) Go to control panel, add/remove programs, and click on "apple application support", click change, and repair. Do same to apple mobile devise support, click change and repair, then to apple software update, click change and click repair.

Step #3) Push Ctrl, Alt & Delete to see if your "bonjour" service is running. If not you have to turn it on by going to control panel, Admin tools, then services.

Step #4) Now you can click on "itunessetup.exe" file that you downloaded. If you haven't you need to download.

Step #5) Now it will install without any problems.

Step #6) To sync with your iphone you MUST restart your computer

It amazes me that many people reading this thread, which now contains 17 pages of “fixes”, don’t seem to understand that there is more than one problem that causes a failure when attempting to upgrade iTunes to version10.5. I hope the following is helpful to those frustrated by these problems and “fixes”.

The iTunes64setup .exe file for iTunes 10.5 is actually a package of 6 files including AppleApplications.msi, AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi, AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi, Bonjour64.msi, iTunes64.msi, and SetupAdmin.exe. During the attempted upgrade to 10.5, if any of these files encounters a problem with any pre-existing files or registry entries on your PC, the installation of some or all of the applications will fail.

Why are there problems on some PCs but not others? There are a variety of possibilities including previous interrupted installations, power failures, viruses, and too many other issues to list. Just accept the fact that while the majority of Windows 7 x64 PCs upgrade to iTunes successfully, a small number do not.

In the interest of clarity, let’s separate the various problems into two categories:

  1. Installations that fail because an existing Apple application already on your PC is defective.
  2. Installations that fail because a file or registry entry already on your PC that is essential for the upgrade is missing.

Category 1 problems above are those that can be solved by following the instructions sprinkled in the 17 pages of this thread to uninstall all of the previous Apple software. But if you have carefully followed those instructions and still have a problem, you more than likely have a Category 2 issue. One symptom of this is when iTunes does upgrade to 10.5 but does not recognize your Apple devices. This is caused by Mobile Device Support for 10.5 failing to install (the dreaded “rollback” message during the installation).

There is a solution to this problem. Actually, it is really an installation work-around because after upgrading iTunes to 10.5 normally (and failing because it does not recognize your Apple devices), you manually install the files and registry entries for Mobile Device Support.

The detailed instructions can be found here: http://randomwindowstips.wordpress.com/2009/12/08/windows-7-itunes-9-software-is -not-installed/

I recommend that you start by removing all Apple software, as explained in previous posts in this thread. Then download the various folders that are mentioned in the above link. Then install iTunes 10.5 using a fresh iTunes64setup.exe. Verify that iTunes 10.5 installed but that it does not recognize your Apple devices. Then carefully follow the remaining instructions in the link. Step 4 is a little fuzzy. Since I am running Windows 7 x64, I placed the “Driver” folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple. Lo and behold, after weeks and weeks of frustration, Itunes 10.5 worked perfectly after I followed the remaining instructions and rebooted.

Good luck to all.

I suggest you Google and download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Then once again completely remove all Apple programs. The install and run the utility, look for any of the Apple applications on the list that this utility provides, and remove them. This will remove any residual references to Apple applications. Then install a fresh copy of iTunes.

Thank you very much this solution worked after 3 weeks of trying different methods.

I have Windows 7 32bit.

I first uninstalled all Apple software per the recommeded order found at: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923

If the Apple Mobile Device Support program does not uninstall, try to Repair it first via the Control Panel and then uninstall.

When you Install Itunes 10.5 package, the Apple Mobile Device Support will fail and roll back however, the rest of the installation programs will install success fully included iTunes 10.5.

The follow the instructions here.

I am able to sync with my Iphone 4s now. Once caveat is that there will not be an entry in Control Panel for Apple Mobile Device Support using this process.

That is okay, I will wory about that in the future update of iTunes.

Another caveat: If Apple releases an update to iTunes, it is possible that you (and I) will have the same issue again. Therefore, find a friend who has iTunes on Windows 7 and after he updates iTunes, copy the Mobile Device Support files and the registry entries from the updated PC:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apple Inc.\Apple Mobile Device Support]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apple Inc.\Apple Mobile Device Support\Shared]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Apple Mobile Device]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Apple Mobile Device\Parameters]

and hope that the drivers don't change. Very scary work-around but better than nothing, I guess.

WOO, FINALLY I fixed it.

Running windows 7 64 ultimate.

I had problem where the Itunes 10.5 msi just returned stupid "encountered errors", looking at the log, a bunch of jibberish that I can't narrow down on.

Here's what I did:

1) Cleaned out all apple stuff (just like all the other posts says)

2) Cleaned out computer with CCleaner (not sure if this was needed, but did it anyways)

3) Restart

4) take the iTunes 10.5 setup EXE, open it up with 7zip, then you'll see all the msi files for the other parts of the setup (quicktime, software update, bonjour, etc etc)

5) install each of the msi, EXCEPT itunes.

6) run the apple updater and you should see itunes 10.5 in there, and tell the updater to install that.

Miraclously, that went through without hiccup!

So something is really messed up with the MSI of itunes, and luckily the updater bypassed whatever crap Apple messed up on the MSI file.

btw, the same issue is found on ALL other version of the iTunes I've tried all the way to version 9 in case you're thinking of installing the older version and updating to newest.

I could post the error log generated by the MSI, but it's a 2mb log file.

Hope this can help others.

Hi Draxxis,

Not questioning whether you are correct or not, but curious as to why you are convinced that it is the Apple Application Support install that is failing. The problem with a hack for this is that although the \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support folder contains only 60.4 MB of files, there are dozens and dozens of registry entries that refer to this application and I don't know which are necessary.
