Yes i did, i have a relatively newer system with only mse on it. I tryed the clean removal of everything apple related along with turning off MSE and rebooting I also tryed to run in Admin. (I think this has something to do with my install of W7, i've had intermittent internal errors when i try to install ms word or other programs but i never came up with the reason why.)... same errors again, however i just installed 10.5 on a newer computer running w7 64b and it worked first time. My guess is some sort of windows update or something related to something older versions of itunes (considering i didn't have to remove any files off of my other pc because i never had itunes on the other pc.) is messing this up for most of us. Time to move all my music over to the other pc and waste a couple hours... Hope you guys find some sort of cure.

I now have 10.5.1, without a hitch, all windows updates up to date. Including the SP1. This now more than ever seems like a windows related issue more than anything else. Get your windows OS inline, should not have errors like cant install net framwork or C++ , or errors installing the service pack, mismathched regristry errors of 150 install and unistalls. I had the same probelm and also couldnt install Flight Simulator X, same error message(vc80CRT)MS office 2007, and IE8. I think that this version of itunes is utilizing that framework more than the previous versions, thats what it is for. actually. So you need to be upto date. I also read somewhere that you can't install the previous windows updates if you have a beta version of win7, ie. the hacked prerelease that has been going around as torrents since its inception. So you might want to check that also.

Good point tdbss, where is a good place to start does window have a good troubleshooting process or a "repair"? I don't really feel like formatting my drive to restart all over again, I did buy this pc with W7 already on it and getting a new partition would be a pain in the ..., it came with this dell pc; already installed with no discs included (I'd rather dodge the problem instead of taking that kinda of crazy time consuming action lol).

tdbss - of course this is a Windows related problem. It's an iTunes/Windows 7 compatibility issue. Updating Windows 7 and making sure evevrything in the OS was inline did nothing to solve the problem on my PC.

I'm back to v10.4.10. I don't have the time or patience to try to fix what Apple screwed up in v10.5 any longer.

Sorry Apple, but you've lost a lot of my respect. I'll think twice from now on about buying music and video from you.

You know I have found a long time ago to keep windows on its own partition, for stuff like this, virus, and whatever else. I tried for, I wanna say, almost a week all the fixes and work arounds. cc cleaner, and other registry fixers and unistallers but was the same thing. So I just wiped the windows drive after savings bookmarks, contacts, etc reinstalled win 7 and mobo drivers then the service pack and all the other updates, then device drivers. and then when right to itunes 10.5, installed no problem at all. That just the way I am though, don't have the patients for all the other crap. I wanted my os 5.0 and I wanted it now.

Unfortunately the latest release of iTunes, 10.5.1 also does not install normally but the work-around we used for 10.5 works for this release too, in fact it is actually easier to implement.

1. Uninstall iTunes 10.5, Apple Application Support, and Apple Software Update using the Windows Control Panel.

2. Then manually remove the Mobile Device Support folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple.

3. Install iTunes 10.5.1

4. Replace the folder removed in step 2 above with the same folder copied from a friends PC after he or she successfully updated iTunes 10.5 to 10.5.1.

5. Use regedit to find registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apple Inc.\Apple Mobile Device Support] and change "Version"="4.0.0.96" to "Version"="4.0.0.97"

6. Reboot, start iTunes and check that your Apple devices are recognized.

That's it. Essentially, you are simply doing a manual install of Mobile Device Support. This release of iTunes initiates the iTunes Match feature.

It is golden in that it gets you to iTunes 10.5 which allows iTunes to recognize OS 5 devices but that solution will not get you to the recently released 10.5.1 which is needed for the iTunes Match service. The reason is that the upgrade to iTunes 10.5.1 also slightly modifies the Mobile Device Support files (4.0.0.96 to 4.0.0.97). If the "golden solution" got you to iTunes 10.5, follow my additional instruction to get to 10.5.1.
