Victory! I don't know if this is what did it but, I went through the Uninstall or change programs list and repaired all all of the Apple software I could find. After that, I retried the itunes installer and it worked!

Has anyone else tried this method. I tried the uninstall method and that didn't work for me. However, this method described above worked for me flawlessly.

hmm. sorry that didn't work out for you. i actually had to update the 'Apple Software Update' program first. once that went through then it did a scan and updated both iTunes from 10.4.1 to 10.5 and did a fresh install of Safari for me (i normally use Chrome).

info about Apple Support Update for Windows 7

perhaps uninstall everything then install iTunes 10.4.1 again and try using the Apple Software Update program to get to iTunes 10.5?

iTunes 10.4.1 still available for download:

aside from all of that. you're probably right. just wait it out until Apple catches up.

Same here on Five machines.

I've got two Win 7 desktops (both are clean and have never had itunes installed) and 3 x Win 7 laptops. One of which is my main system and had the previous version of itunes.

I get the same error on all five systems as the original poster. So its not related to previous itune versions. In order to get IOS 5, I borrowed my daughters cheap atom based netbook - installed itunes and my entire database and upgraded that way.

I was hoping that airplay was similar to DLNA - so for me the IOS 5 was an anti-climax and I've gone back to my HTC which is DLNA enabled (one touch on my HTC and video comes out of my Samsung smart TV, which is what I wanted).

I hope you guys get it sorted, but for me DLNA is the future. I dont have the time or effort to invest in any more Apple (airplay) equipment when I've just invested over £1500 in a new DLNA TV. So its back to HTC for me.

Not a good swan song for Steve Jobs. 😟

Well folks I've been able to get iTunes 10.5 installed on my Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. It took a while and I'm not sure which of the following steps I took did the trick, but iTunes 10.5 is working and my iPad 2 OS has been updated to 5 and all the programs work fine.

These are the steps I took following several uninstall and re-install attempts with iTunes 10.5 64 bit.

1. Uninstalled iTunes

2. Unistalled QuickTime

3. Reboot

4. Ran a Registry Cleaner

5. Reboot

6. Repaired, 'Apple Application Support'

7. Repaired, 'Apple Mobile Device Support'

8. Repaired, 'Apple Software Update'

9. Re-installed QuickTime

10. Re-installed iTunes 10.5

- rather than have it install itself (along with the download) I saved the file to a directory and then install

11. Reboot

12. Services: Apple Mobile Device - Status - 'Started'

13. Run iTunes as Administrator

14. Everything worked fine.

15. I just run it now from the shortcut and 'no problem'

I sure hope this helps somebody, as I found the whole process very frustrating and time consuming.

Blessings

Bryan

Alright people after hours upon hours of trial and error I finally was able to install the new iTunes and update my iPhone... I wrote down all my steps which worked for me, so I hope they work for you!! Good Luck!!!

  1. Be Patience!!!!!!!
  2. Unplug all AppleDevices from your USB ports or any other ports
  3. Restart your computer
  4. Open up Control Panel> Programs > Uninstall Programs
  5. Click the “Publisher”to list the programs by publisher
  6. Uninstall iTunes and Restart the computer
  7. Repeat steps 4-5 and uninstall all programs by the publisher Apple Inc. EXCEPT Apple Software Update
  8. Upon uninstalling all programs by Apple Inc. EXCEPT Apple Software Update, restart your computer
  9. Delete all these folders:
    1. C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\
    2. C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTime
    3. C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTimeVR
    4. C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
    5. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
    6. C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
  10. Go back to the Control Panel and repair Apple Software Update
  11. Restart the computer
  12. Go back to the Control Panel and uninstall Apple Software Update
  13. Remove all Apple Inc. entries from your registry (For this step I would recommend using CCleaner or a program like it if you are not familiar with the RegEdit command… I personally used CCleaner which can be downloaded for free from www.download.com)
  14. Once you have removed all registry entries from Apple Inc. restart your computer.
  15. Do one more check to ensure that all registry errors and Apple Inc. entries are removed (which include iTunes, Bonjour, QuickTime, etc)
  16. Do another quick check to make sure all Apple Inc. programs are uninstalled from the control panel, all the folders are deleted from Step 9 and the registry is clean.
  17. One more restart and then download iTunes and the installation should go through flawlessly

These step worked for me and I hope they work for you, best of luck!!!

After a couple of days, I thought that I would return to this thread and provide a wrap-up of my experience. From all of the posts on this thread it becomes readily apparent that there is no easy fix. In fact, there are myriad fixes...and isn't that a shame.

Isn't it a shame that Apple would release an update to iTunes (an already flawed product) and dump it on us. Can we honestly say that they did any product testing?! Apple has enough money to buy every kind of PC out there and every kind of OS and every version of that OS and test with it. Did they do that? Do they do that? I can hardly believe that they do.

I think I am beginning to understand why Steve Jobs had to run his company with a strong hand. Someone had to keep these "loose canons" (my opinion) under control. Shame on Apple. When I was a developer, if I ever released anything so shoddy, I would have been fired. And, my company was many many times bigger than Apple.

End of rant...

The short of the story is that, I followed all the posts and tried everything. I went out on the internet and ran down so many bunny paths, that I thought I would lose my mind. I know computers. I've worked with them as a senior-level IT support person. But, this problem was so totally off the wall that the suggested fixes started to degrade the PC. Eventually Microsoft Office would not work. And, it would not re-install. Eventually at 2:00 AM on Thursday (10/13/2011) morning I stopped.

When I woke up, I knew I really had no choice but to re-install the Windows 7 (64-bit) OS. It is now 9:00 PM on Thursday, and I am still bringing my PC back to life. Luckily I did not have to work today, as I worked the ENTIRE day on restoration of the PC.

For those of you who cannot get iTunes 10.5 to work, you might be faced with the same situation. Instead of beating your head against the wall anymore, take some time to decide if you have all of the software to re-construct your PC (think on it hard)...and then, if you feel that you can rebuild the PC, go ahead and get it over with.

OR...you can forget the iPhone and move to one of Apple's competitors' phones. I'm not sure if they would be any better, but I can't imagine anything worse than iTunes. I've said it before, and I'll say it again...how can Jobs come up with such a great product like the iPhone and tie it to such a piece of software garbage as iTunes?!

This will be it for me. I wish you all the best. Hang in there.
