How do I enable multitasking gestures in iOS 5.0 on iPad 1?

"iOS 5 includes a few new moves and shortcuts to help you get around even quicker on your iPad: Using four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps."

How do I enable these gestures? I have upgraded to iOS 5 on my iPad 1 and do not see this setting in the general tab of settings.

Apple, what was the rationale behind exempting this feature from the iPad1? Obviously many tech aware users that had unlocked this feature in the dev version of 4.3 are missing it. Obviously we didnt' notice performance issues...I'm assuming that there was some logic behind the decision, but from a user standpoint it seems to be the wrong decision.

As a developer on iOS, Windows Mobile and Android, I make sure I spread my use across a range of devices so I'm proficient in a range of platforms.

I can say Android is very nice right now, personally iPads have been my primary choice of tablet for personal and project management use -- but now, naturally, I feel screwed by Apple right now having disabled a gesture I used at lease once an hour!

Not in a position to purchase an iPad 2 as we're purchasing a collection of Android tablets, so need to get more use out of the 1s -- it does feel like Apple is trying to make the iPad 1 seem older and slower than it actually is to encourage upgrades.

+1 to all this!

Just posted this on the feedback page:

Let iPad 1 users use the multi touch gestures!

Can't believe that Apple dicided to remove the Multi touch Gestures from iOS5 for iPad 1st gen.

The supposed reason that iPad can't handle them is ridiculous. I and several thousand users online tell you we've been happily using it for several months now, and although an occasional app will freeze, all works fine.

I'm really sick of apple deciding on my behalf what I should and shuld not have. It's up to me if the responsiveness if good enogh. It's up to me if I want to wear down my home button to malfunction (as my iPhone 3GS is at the moment) or use a 4 fingers swipe that is more natural and causes no wear down on the home button.

This is really ridiculous Apple, and you should have learned by now to stop imposing our personal decisions on the customization and use of your products.

If you feel it is not the best solution, disabled it by default. BUT PLEASE, let we, the buying customers have the possibility to activate it, without jail braking the device, something I only consider doing to get this!

Hope you can have the humility to correct this bad decision ASAP.

Thanks!

I have been using gestures for almost a year now on my iPad 1 and it is a huge benenfit. Now that I went to ios 5 I feel like my ipad is crippled. It never hurt my performance in any way. This makes me hesitant to buy apple as I know that in one year I will be treated like an afterthought. That is one of the things that has been great about apple - longevity of support in devices. This just feels like a ploy to get more people moved to the iPad 2. I've already downloaded ios 4.3.5 to downgrade to just because the functionality loss isn't worth the "200 new features". LISTEN TO US APPLE and let iPad 1 users have gestures.

Well, I just got off the phone with a lawyer that deals in issues like this, and he says that we have enough here to bring a class action lawsuit against Apple since quite a few of us would not have upgraded to iOS 5 had we have known, and that Apple specifically did not state that it was a feature only available for certain devices. If anyone is interested in joining a class action lawsuit against Apple, please email me at "geek at alaska dot com", with at least your name and an email address that you check regularly. We've made captures of all of Apple's videos, and website so that we do have proof should they decide to change it after the fact, and we'll be making screen captures of this post right after posting since Apple likes to delete anything dealing with lawsuits. Should Apple want to contact me, you already have my contact information associated with my Apple account and this login.

If you want to get really made, it's just a simple switch in the config.xml file to change:

"multi-touch = false" to "multi-touch = true", reload the file, reboot the pad and voila multi-touch on an iOS 5 iPad 1! Just furter proof that's there's really no reason not to have this an Apple have decided to directly turn it off, not remove it, just turn it off!

how/where do you get to this config.xml file. I don't know how to make this change. Sounds like a good work around though. Bad Apple!
