How do I enable multitasking gestures in iOS 5.0 on iPad 1?

"iOS 5 includes a few new moves and shortcuts to help you get around even quicker on your iPad: Using four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps."

How do I enable these gestures? I have upgraded to iOS 5 on my iPad 1 and do not see this setting in the general tab of settings.

Holy Night. You people need to get a grip. The feedback button has been posted a dozen times. Let Apple know. This message board, as a whole, doesn't care that you like or dislike a feature, bug or enhancement that was left out or included. Apple does not monitor this forum, nor does it use it for customer feedback.

It's very simple.... Let Apple know. Posting in the message boards over and over and over again does NOTHING to resolve your issues.

You are, of course, assuming that the people who are venting or exchanging information here are not also logging feedback. I suspect you would be quite wrong in that assumption but you are, in any case, not obliged to read any of this. And, as the appearance and disappearance of the last post shows, Apple do indeed have people monitoring these forums. What they relay up the chain is less clear to we lower level mortals.

For those interested in work-arounds I'll repeat that the XCode trick that worked under 4.3 does not appear to work any more and that tethered jailbreaks are the only working suggestions I've found - personally I wouldn't recommend that; much better to wait and see if Apple comes out with an update that turns gestures on for iPad early adopters. In the meantime, people with dodgy home buttons might want to turn on AssistiveTouch under the accessibility settings.

If anyone else has any good news or feedback from support lines I'm sure there are a few folks who would like to hear from you.

Spent the following feedback:

"Dera Apple

When you changed in the ios5 features site the text from saying that all iPads will going to have gestures to iPad 2 only, I finally realise that you are all a bunch of liars. Seriously, why do you do that? The gestures code is include in the software and a simple jailbreak allows me to have it ( just like now as Iam writing this text) a I DON'T HAVE ANY BUG OR LAG BECAUSE OF WITH!

I am not stupid. If your plan was to made me and others to upgrade to iPad 2, well... Screw you

Stop being stupid and be realistic: gestures work on iPad 1 and you must fix this ASAP!

Best regards"

has anyone tried to plug ipad 1 with ios 5 into Xcode, and enable this function just like the way to enable it in ios 4.3.3? If anyone succeed, would you please let me know?

I first got this function in ios 4.3.3 by confirming development use via xcode, it's really unfair for apple to remove this function from ipad 1 after we tested it for them! And it proved that it ran perfectly on ipad 1

This is only available if you've got a jailbreaked iPad, I've not done it myself but read an article on it but I don't want to jail break my iPad.

Discovered something very interesting this morning though in that the US Apple site now says "Multitouch gestures for iPad 2" whereas the UK site still says "Multitouch gestuers for iPad", clearly Apple are trrying to cover their tracks!

yep some websites have been updated but the australian one says this ...

http://www.apple.com/au/ios/features.html

iOS 5 includes a few new moves and shortcuts to help you get around even quicker on your iPad: using four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps.

So all in all poor form by apple to now attempt to hide the fact they got it wrong, cause enough to continue logging those bug reports, hopefully they will realise its a must fix situation...

5200 views might suggest a lot of people are affected, enough to warrant an urgent fix

Hello,
after the upgrade to ios 5, I am very disappointed.
Where in the 200 new features, I think for my iPad I is the gesture control.
Missing entirely, shame Apple. You let the iPad is a 7 month old die slowly.
Even if it does not bother them in the future I will think about it I just buy another product from Apple.
Or I'll be looking at the devices from Samsung and other detail.
regards
