How do I enable multitasking gestures in iOS 5.0 on iPad 1?

"iOS 5 includes a few new moves and shortcuts to help you get around even quicker on your iPad: Using four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps."

How do I enable these gestures? I have upgraded to iOS 5 on my iPad 1 and do not see this setting in the general tab of settings.

It would appear that apple has managed to p1ss off alot of ipad one users in one fowl swoop, what makes it worse is that fact we were the early adoptors who got asked, why do you want a big iphone for? and then spent time showing people how good it was! actually promoting it for apple! and then to get this kick in the teeth is frustrating! i wish i had known about xcode before!

however!

keep sending feedback, i must have sent twenty yesterday and will keep sending them untill i get a reply from these idiots! and wont stop untill i do, the more feedback sheets we fill in the more they will have to listen, it takes less than a min, i just asking the same question! moaning on here wont do anything, feedback might 🙂

also note they have changed the website now, but they have not changed the iOS5 spash screen :

(• AirPlay Mirroring for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S

• Multitasking Gestures for iPad

◦ Use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen

◦ Swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar

◦ Swipe left or right to switch between apps)

clearly they were planning on releasing this update to us, otherwise on the spalsh screen it would have stated ipad 2 only, note in the sentence above it states it CLEARLY makes a reference to ipad 2 for airplay, so, whatever the problem, they can fix it and they know it works!

Yep anoying also because I spend houres searching for it making my ipad upgrade much less fun 😟

I am afraid I see a different Apple philosophy occuring these days. They don't just want to make perfect products they want to make money now 😟 😟

Guess I'll wait for a jailbreak and look around with the competitors. Samsung was on its way in copying. Hope they will succeed in selling they have my attention because I'm starting a different philosophy too now!

See if I can find the feedback site to tell them what I think. If you advertise it you have to deliver, this is stupid.

I'm not a jailbreaker.

Never was. Never will be.

These words are gone. Since my first iPhone, i never found real interest in jailbreaking. Not myWi. Not SBSettings. Nothing.

But now, my choice is made. If iPad 3 would exist and 2&3 only would have MTG, i would have gone with it.

But my MTG were on before the os5 and now they're off.

I DON' T ACCEPT THAT MY IPAD IS WORSE THAN BEFORE THE UPGRADE.

So Jailbreak is the only way to get back my MTG ? so be it.

I sincerely hope youi read this Apple, because if you do,you must realise your era is done if you keep up like this. You can't create wonderfull products without the love of customers. And you're really loosing some big part with this trick.

Put it back. Please. So apple can keep "lead the industry in innovation". With it's fan community happy.

A desapointed fan.

Today's the day! No, not to buy an new iPhone. Today's the day I send my iPad 1 to Gezel.com. I hope I get a decent amount of $. I am thoroughly disgusted with Apple. With IOS5 they TOOK AWAY my most useful feature, MULTIGESTURES. 200 new features my ***. The post-Steve Jobs Apple is not MY Apple. They WORKED before and now they don't. Shame on Apple. Looks like Samsung's in my future.

Folks, if they've changed the the Apple iOS 5 webpage to say "Multitasking Guestures for iPad2" it is a BAD sign.

Leaving it the way it was is what you would expect if there was an "oops!" coming out with a fix.

Changing it to "for iPad2" after the fact implies that there is no interest in enabling it for the iPad 1.

It will be interesting to see what Apple says about disabling it for the original iPad - or even if they say anything. Right now changing the website is a bad sign for iPad 1 owners and, IMHO, a bad move for the Apple brand and customer loyalty. My iPad 1 is just about a year old and fully capable of running the multitouch gestures (probably Airplay Mirroring too!) and it is a horrible precident for a company to make this kind of move - particularly has the competition is just now starting to heat up.

So, what is it?

  • Oops! The release master for the original iPad did not include the multitouch by mistake and a new release will soon be available? (Changing the website makes this less likely)
  • Multitouch Gestures are not compatible with the origninal iPad (We know that this is not the case because they worked just fine under 4.3 AND for people who have jailbroken their iPads and changed ONE entry in a configuration file)
  • Apple doesn't have their "stuff" together and they'll get their story straight and will enable multitouch of the original iPad (Once again changing the website is a circling the wagons type move that indicates that they are setting themselves up against iPad 1 owners)
  • Apple deliberatly is not enabling multitouch gestures on the iPad 1 as a move to encourage upgrading to the iPad2 (Pretty cynical option that I find hard to believe but changing the website makes me consider this more carefully.)

Your thoughts?

i agree overshoot, the changing of the website is the worst bit, like 1984! are the proles supposed to forget the truth, and then think, "maybe i was mistaken" this is a terrible bit of PR from apple i think you will find many apple user will now jailbreak, and will consider other tablets now, in all honesty, competitiors should be reading this, and capitalising on apples mistake!

but the website update is a bad sign!

my pc really needs updating and i was thinking about a macbook, not anymore!
