iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

Lawrence,

I don't understand why you are so interested in fighting with everyone in this thread.

You are going to ridiculous lengths to argue with users that have a very simple request. If I create a backup, with the "Encrypted" checkbox unchecked, and I go to load that backup and it asks for a password that I DID NOT ENTER at that specific time and the helpful "feature" of remembering a previous password isn't described in advance, that sounds an awful lot like a bug.

This bug is very random.

Eldest daughter and Middle daughter used to share a PC. Eldest daughter got a PC laptop for xmas. She is the ONLY one who uses her laptop. She has been syncing her iphone to her laptop for the last 3 months. She upgraded to IO5 and got the same issue that everyone has discussed here. I tried every single suggestion. I downloded elcomsoft - it returned a "no password found" dialog box. Out of desperation we tried facebook, email, game passwords. Nothing. The very last thing we tried was her sisters facebook password. That worked.

That is just so unbelievably random. So to recap. Itunes on a new and completely different computer somehow managed to store a password from a previous computer and from an account that didn't even belong to my eldest daughter.

Let's think about that for a second. What if we had an out of town who used my computer to check their facebook or email. It could hae decided to grab that one and we would really be in trouble.

I've also noticed that this has been going on for about 5 months and there still isn't a solution or a bug fix.

Bravo Apple.

Yes, I agree with your observation that the solution is to keep trying the same password that you know is correct. For me, the fourth try of typing in the exact same password works in iTunes on my iMac. I have repeated this several times, and each time it works.

I also reset my password, but the same problem occurs in iTunes. I have to type in my password four times in iTunes to get it to work.

iTunes is having issues. I can log in easily on the first attempt every time to post on this message board and on my iPad 2, but in iTunes on my iMac it takes four attempts and then it works. Apple needs to release a statement to the public telling people abut this. For Apple to know that this problem exists and that it is causing literally thousands of people to be stressed out is callous and uncaring.

I agree. The solution (for me at least) is to keep trying the same password that I know is correct. For me, the fourth try of typing in the exact same password works in iTunes on my iMac. I have repeated this several times, and each time it works.

What is messing people up is that when iTunes does not recognize the correct password, people are attempting other passwords. Those other passwords are all incorrect. The problem, as you stated, is that the password was entered correctly the first time but because of iTunes having issues it does not recognize it.

People, just keep entering the password you know is correct. It will eventuall recognize it, or at least this works for me. If this still does not work, reset your password (but then you may still have to enter it repeatedly in iTunes).

Apple needs to fix this.

The below steps worked for me, feel free to give it ago.

1. When promted for a password enter any random one.
2. Once you receive the incorrect password notification, click ok.

3. Disconnect your iphone from the USB while I tunes is open and re-connect after 5 seconds.

4. Your backup should start automatically.

Rite lads an lasses, first post on this MENTAL issue, i tried every password i could think of all the zeros the 1234, 12345, nothing worked, however the password you use when you first connect the phone to a pc/mac to enable it for use, thats the password thats worked for me, a most ridiculous decision by apple to allow this and i got it fluke!

Utterly crazy but its worked for me, for anybody else rying to get aound it its normally the first password you associate with the phone, hope this helps!

I also did not set up or create a back up password, what apple were thinking for this to happen is beyond me.

Upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 today. I have never encrypted backups.

I now cannot restore my iPhone backup as a password (which I have never set) is required. I keep a list of all my passwords in an encrypted file on my computer including my iTunes password.

None of my paswords work. From the above I take it that the password that has been applied is a long since changed password from my iTunes account, set literally years ago.

I have lost months worth of photos of my son growing up and am absolutely heartbroken.

My first Mac was an SE and took a Powerbook 190 to me to University. I stuck with Apple through thick and thin. I feel totally let down. You expect this from Microsoft but the whole point of buying a Mac is that this sort of thing didn't used to happen.

I guess when I retire my 3GS in a couple of months, I'll be buying an Android phone then? I cannot imagine giving Apple money ever again after this. Data is just data but when the very means of backing it up sabotages your means of retrieing it... I despair.

I know this is going to sound absolutely unhelpful, but did you read my comment on what worked for us?

Has anyone ever used your computer besides you to log in to mail or facebook or something like that? We were baffled and astounded when the password that worked for us was not even one my eldest daughters passwords. It was a password my middle daughter used for her facebook. In our case we were syncing to my eldest daughters new laptop which my middle daughter had never ever used. But they had previously shared the desktop computer.

That's how crazy this issue is. Itunes had just taken a random password off the old computer and attached itself to it.

I'm really surprised at how long this issue has been going on without a word from Apple. I can only hope they fix it in an upcoming release. As a parent with a katrillion pictures of my kids, I feel your pain.

Ok, I tried all of the suggestions, email passwords, facebook passwords, old itunes password, passcodes, partial etc. I tried downloading iBackup bot, along with a few other things. I was able to restore from my old iphone, but not a backup from my old ipod. What finally worked is what was mentioned about entering a random password, clicking ok, removing the ipod from the computer for 5 seconds with itunes still up, then plugging it back in. Maybe this will help someone else too.
