iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

Lawrence,

I don't understand why you are so interested in fighting with everyone in this thread.

You are going to ridiculous lengths to argue with users that have a very simple request. If I create a backup, with the "Encrypted" checkbox unchecked, and I go to load that backup and it asks for a password that I DID NOT ENTER at that specific time and the helpful "feature" of remembering a previous password isn't described in advance, that sounds an awful lot like a bug.

after having gone crazy for hrs , tryin all passwords that even my grandpa could ve used ..this is how it worked

1. disconnect the phone and close the itunes .

2. reconnect the phone and open itunes .

3. 3 options will be displayed ..click on continue with restore .

4. go to back up option in the phone window

5. check in encrpt box if it isnt checked already.

6...click on the new password option

7...enter new password and it restores automatically

8. enjoy

Lost a whole afternoon on this to no avail. Trying various trick mentionned in this thread but nothing works.

If I don't recover all my contacts, calendar and all very soon I swear I'll never buy an Apple product again.

There was very important (job related) data in that phone. I took the risk to update the firmware in order to be able to install an app. Because I trusted Apple and knew a backup would be made, I moved forward with this and now I'm screwed.

After an update of my iPhone 4 iTunes asked me to enter a password! I also never set up a password for backups. I spent 6 hours on trying the trick mentioned above. I also tried the elcomsoft password breaker metioned above. But thank you for your contributions here, it helped! I tried even the access password from my bank account app (Sparkasse App - German Bank). I am sure I never used this password before for anything. This password was dedicated for my bank app. iTunes took this password to encrypt my backups. I can't believe it!

But I am so happy. Thank you for giving me the hint to enter all passwords I ever used for my iPhone. Even that one for my bank app. I would never except that.

Neither 0000 nor 1234 worked for me. I got so scared. Then I tried 'littlemonster' or 'ladygaga' (passwords I put on vague websites) That also didn't work.

Finally, I tried my name in small letters, and IT WORKED LIKE MAGIC!

So I'm just *guessing* the password can be your *Apple ID(iTunes) password* without numbers and special characters. Might be. šŸ™‚

I had this same problem with my iPad backup and the solution ended up being the most random, unrelated password possible.

After trying every password I could think of and all of the ones suggested in this thread (itunes account, computer password, 4-digit numeric unlock password for the iPad, variations with and without the numbers, 1111, 0000, 12345, etc), I finally tried elcomsoft to help crack the first two characters.

The password to unlock and restore the backup for my iPad ended up being a password that I usde to encrypt a Blackberry backup about a year ago.

If this was a password that I normally use, it might make sense. However, what weirds me out about it is that I am 100% certain that I have only used that Blackberry backup password once in my life, for a specific reason (it wasn't my phone so I made up a random password for it). I did it once for that phone's backup and never thought twice about it.

Thank goodness for elcomsoft and I'm so glad I was able to restore...but how did one (non-apple) device's backup encryption end up affecting and locking down my iPad backup? I have no clue. Pretty creepy.
