iOS 5 Upgrade Bricked My iPhone 4 (Stuck in Recovery Mode)

I, like many others, kept getting "An internal error occurred" when trying to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. Foolishly, I continued to hit the Update button and try again. It eventually led to my iPhone being in recovery mode. I am now unable to restore the phone due to the ongoing issues with Apple's servers and unable to use the phone because the failed upgrade process placed the phone in recovery mode.

I had exactly the same problem on both iPhone and iPad.

A cycle of the apple icon, a brief appearance of a progress bar, followed by the rotating spokes. About half a minute later the cycle repeats. Unresponsive to most button pushing attempts.

I'd tried everything:

1. Bell Canada - "We don;t service iPhones, we only sell them"

2. Future Shop - "We're not authorized to repair, we are only an authorized seller", and

3. 1-800-My APPLE - still not picking up 4 days later and 120 minutes of on hold

4. Of course there are no Apple stores in all of Saskatchewan.

The solution I'm calling - Dumb Blind Luck - worked for both.

While connected to a mac running the latest itunes and OS, press the on/off at the same time asthe home button. Hold them down for a really long time (almost a full minute - appears to power off, then the apple icon appears, and finally the connection icon appears) and this time it actually connects, can be seen by itunes and the restore button can be used.

I love my iPhone and iPad. The thought of being without them was not impressing me.

Good luck everyone

Chris

I FIXED MY IPOD!!

I uninstalled iTunes, Bonjour, Quicktime, and anything with "Apple" in it. After a restart and a fresh iTunes install, I gave it another shot and it worked. I lost all my apps but it retained my audiobooks and music. Just updated my iPhone 4 and it went off without a hitch. Make sure you are plugged directly into a USB port on the BACK of your computer. I've read that trying to update while plugged into a USB port is one of the causes, and I was plugged into a USB hub when my iPod bricked. When updating my iPhone 4, I was plugged directly into a USB port on the back of the computer.

Hope this helps someone!

I do not think Ive had an ugrade on my iphone that hasnt caused a problem with it. However IOS 5 did eventually update and that was after I reinstalled Itunes despite the fact it was upgraded to the latest verson. Despite all the problems I still belive that Apple does not want us to have such a bad experience.

Sadly although it would appear that many have had problems, how many millions havent.

All very frustrating.

Only piece of advice I can give is backup, back and backup again before atempting any upgrade.

Why is it some people on this Apple forum seem always to degenerate in name calling and insults. All very strange.

I went to the apple store to get this problem fixed. What he did was he plugged in the phone, clicked "Restore" which wiped out everything on my iphone, then added everything from my last back up. Oncethat was done, I was able to sync. Not sure if this will help everyone though. And depending on when you last backed up you might lose information. Also, if your backup file is corrupted, this won't work.

For what it is worth, went to the genuis bar last night with my 3gs stuck in rcovery mode. After a hour of so of tring without sucess they said it was likely a latent hardware issue that was uncovered by the update. Plausable but dificult to prove either way. No solution of anysort was on offer given it was more that one year out warrenty.
