No iCloud on Snow Leopard? THIS IS A JOKE, APPLE!

Right now I'm thinking about leaving Apple products behind for good. So I can't use iCloud on Snow Leopard (which is not that old)? Meaning my syncing (contacts, bookmarks, calendars etc.) will just stop when they shut down MobileMe in 2012?

GREAT WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS, APPLE!

I can't update to Lion (various reasons). So now what? Dump the crap Macbook+iMac+iPhone in the toilet? Should be a great idea!

VERY PROFESSIONAL, CONGRATULATIONS!

No iCloud support for Snow Leopard... It's disgraceful - end of story!

Apple appear to have dumped those Snow Leopard users who, like me, are stuck on it due to hefty early investments in an iMac and MacBook Pro! Let alone, iPhone and iPad.

Furthermore, to add insult to injury, many of us have forked out 100s of dollars in MobileMe family membership fees over the past few years.

As of now, I have no over-air sync for Contacts & Notes between my iMac or MacBook Pro and my iPhone and iPad. Fortunately I discovered the CalDAV workaround for iCal so, at least, my diary is ok.

25 years of using Macs and this is the worst they've done.

You're using your Macs wrong... you need to run right out and buy all new Macs that can run Lion. :-/

I'm in the same situation. We have Macs that have been bought over many years. Some are PowerPC and some are Intel and many can't run Lion. The older machines are used for administration tasks and are plenty fast and useful for what they are used for as long as they can sync everything with all our other Macs.

In order for iCloud to be useful for us it needs to work on Snow Leopard and Leopard machines and also needs to sync Mail rules and Keychains, just like MobileMe does now.

My definition of "loyal" customers used to be very different from mOthr's. If loyalty were based on "keeping up with the latest hardware in order to keep up with the software," only wealthy people would be in that "loyal" category. Both my husband and myself have desktop computers and laptops, and I've been an Apple user since my first computer in 1992. We are both retired, but very active with our retirement activities which use computers very heavily. I maintain 3 websites, and although I do have one computer that could upgrade to Lion, that would mean the end of use of several software programs I use all the time, including the one I use for building and maintaining websites. Yes, it is obsolete, but I know and understand it. I've tried others, and they just don't do it for me.

So I'm stuck with Snow Leopard and will not be able to use the cloud. Which means I not only have to find another hosting service, I'll also have to find another email service, plus all the other features which MobileMe offered will be dead for me.

I always considered myself to be a loyal Apple customer -- even from before when Steve Jobs came back to Apple. I've talked others into purchasing Apple computers and helped them learn how to use them. I've upgraded to the latest OS on every machine, until that machine would no longer take the latest.

Now it appears I have 4 machines that are obsolete (OK -- three plus legacy software that renders the 4th obsolete). I do not have any other Apple device -- have not needed one, and I certainly cannot afford the iPhone and the plans that one has to purchase to use it.

Apple used to pride itself on being backwards compatible, but apparently that has disappeared in the cloud. That was certainly a selling point for the Apple, Inc. of yesteryear.

So I guess I cannot be considered to be a "loyal" Apple customer anymore.

Jeez you guys love complaining!

My system is nearly 5 years old and it can run everything jsut fine so what are you saying?

"Look, I know if youw ant to have a windows machine your system will be obsolete in 6 months. That's why I bought a Mac. Now I haven;t had to buy a new system in over 6 years and with all the money I've saved on hardware upgrades and new computers, my system that is nearing a decade in age is no longer capable of running the latest software. You suck! You company *****! Your product *****! You don't deserve to have me as a customer! I'm gonna go get myself a Windows system and buy myself a new one every 6 months. Weeeeee.... How do you like that? Weeee.... Now who's laughing? Just look at my money being drained from my wallet because I am p*ssed of at you for forcing me to upgrade my hardware after nerly 10 years. I am cheap. I can't afford new hardware every decade! I can't afford to buy a second hand iPhone or even an iPod touch because I only want the latest versions and I can't afford the contracts.... Boo hoo... Woe is me"

Seriously. With people dying of starvation and people getting mutilated and raped on an hourly basis, complaining about having to buy a new Mac once every 10 years hardly seems important. Just get an iPod Touch if it bothers you that much. ****, with iOS5 you can now even send photos and chat with your iPod so it's a decent investment now.

****, you people love complaining. Even Lion wasn't equipped to run the Cloud. Even Lion had to be upgraded to allow it. So if even the latest OS didn't have support built in where the **** do you get off blaming Apple for not having the support in the previous generation of the OS...

Next thing you know Panther users age going to complain: "What???? No cloud on Panther!!!! This is a Joke, Apple. You suck! All Apple devices are "crap" and going in the toilet because you are no longer a professional company.

Withloyal fans like you who needs enemies...

Ninja,

1. Excellent trolling.

2.

"...my system that is nearing a decade in age is no longer capable of running the latest software."

-- that's the point. Our machines ARE capable of running iCloud, (even Lion for that matter) the reason why they won't is because of self imposed limitations by Apple simply for the sake of forcing people to buy new machines/software.

-- If our machines truly just couldn't run the software, I don't think anyone would be complaining. Afterall, it was very clear that Snow Leopard would NOT run on powerPC chips, and I don't remember people making that big of a fuss about it.

3. I would bet money, that if your machine had been purchased six months to a year earlier, and couldn't run Lion or iCloud, you'd probably be crying louder than anyone else.

4.

- Neither does you trolling these forums.

Agreed. This indirectly forced hardware migration is unfavorable. I have 1 out of 3 Macs that can't be upgraded to Lion, and then there is the Rosetta related issues. Either they all play or no play at all, because I need Back to My Mac.

But the insult is that after PAYING for MobileMe for 5 years, I'm being punished with less of a product in the transition. Worst of which is the lost of iDisk. Yes iCloud is free, but that is just to reduce or block the Google dependence some frugal (savy) iOS users had. I can see no technical reason why Snow Leopard can't be on iCloud except for upgrade "politics" posturing.

I hope something changes before June 2012 so I can go back to being gruntle. Right now I'm disgruntle.

icloud is not a replacement for mobile me. If you need features that are no more, you need replacement services.

And iCloud is exclusive only to those owners of EITHER ios5 AND/OR LION.

If you all so badly want to jump across the iCloud, all you need is a 189 US$ iPod touch 8GB or even a used 3rd gen touch as the cheapest device that lets you enjoy ALL icloud features, including keeping your @me.com adress forever. You do not NEED a Mac for that. And you do not WANT one, if you know this : Some features are also not even working or present in a Mac, yes not even in Lion :

iwork document syncing is not even supported in Lion with iwork installed, it is exclusive to iOS5 devices alone, just only to let you know what you think you "miss" . icloud syncing between Macs and iOS5 is basically only Mail,Adresses and iCals .

And the iPod touch by the way is not only a mp3/video player. It is a full blown Mini-Mac in your pocket with iMovie and iwork, facetime, mail , safari, dictionary, imessage, ibooks, and apps and games and all you wish to ever need. So just get that. You might use your old Desktop or Laptop boxes for "other stuff", but you do not need them for iCloud.

Go over to the iCloud forums for Mac. There are people that wished they never signed up for it, because basically it is pointless if you only have a Mac. iCloud only shows what it really has to offer on iOS5 and with icloud-enabled apps on it.

iCloud is only free for the initial space one needs for backups and data. Remember iTunes is no longer storing your iOS backups, it goes all up to the cloud. Over time this needs upgrading, because data on the cloud surely takes space .. ( Already on mine 500MB used of 5GB in only these few days ) :

iCloud will come to Snow Leopard in time. It's still, frankly, a beta product. Some people should be grateful 😉

Apple is rolling it out with Lion and iOS5 because iCloud is programmed in from scratch into those OS's.

iCloud on Snow Leopard will follow when kinks are ironed out and Apple engineers can work on the new set of problems backwards compatibility presents.

As for losing/gaining features, that is Apple's business decision. Obviously some items (keychains) are a risk in an auto-sync world where iOS is more common than the MacOS, and so have been dropped. iOS5 pretty much rules out Mail Rules transferring over, and so on. Rosetta was always a kludge and doomed at some point. All software and related services have built-in obsolescence.

iDisk and Gallery are better replicated elsewhere I guess, from Apple's cost/benefit analysis. I use DropBox and Phanfare and they are superior and discrete. iCloud is not discrete and I suspect Apple would not be able to manage a server farm large enough to handle photo and video archiving.

I think a little patience is in order.

Sjazbec is clearly confused.

I had to go to our local Apple Store yesterday to try to sort out some of the many problems I've had since upgrading to Lion and trying to use the wretched Cloud.

They told me that they think that there may well be support for previous OS coming in the near future. Also, as the iCloud doesn't currently have iDisc they said they're sure that it wlll have something like that by the time Mobileme is cut off next year.

To be honest, if you haven't got it yet, don't worry, it's a complete pain. Mobileme was much better even though we had to pay for it. By the time it's backwards compatible I would hope that they have sorted out all the horrible glitches and actually written a support manual for it because it's just not as easy to migrate as they make out.

Let me get this straight. Neither my MacBook Pro nor iMac can be upgraded to Lion and you think that's reasonable?

Come to MobileMe they said... Everything's synced... Pay £89 for a family annual fee... No problem...

Did all that.

Now dumped.

Well, no, but you will be dumped in 8 months time, and who knows what will support iCloud then.

Oct 18, 2011 10:18 AM in response to Aristophanes

Agreed on all points, Aristophanes!

The issue that has, justifiably, upset MobileMe subscribers (now migrated to iCloud) is the unacceptable loss of cloud-sync Address Book and iCal between our Snow Leopard Macs and our iPhones & iPads.

It was Apple who encouraged us all, with their free trial periods, etc., to join MobileMe... come to the cloud, 90 day free trial, etc. So we did. And it worked. Now it doesn't.

This is not a case of moaning for the sake of it, this is a matter of facilities, previously paid for, being withdrawn from use.

I am sure they will sort it soon. The universal feelings of anger at these losses of facilities are greater than I have ever seen in my 20+ yrs of involvement with Apple.

As I've said, this is not about wanting new toys for free, just the reinstatement of existing facilities promoted and sold to us by Apple.
