Hi I had the same problem which seems to be because of ICloud. Turned it off and the problem has disappeared. It is disappointment that Apple has not really addressed the problem yet. I am fearfull that without Steve Jobs watching over everything as before, Apple will go the ways of HP. This thread started in October and no one has done anything to fix the problem! Thumbs down!

I am still following along (first posted last October) and have tried almost all of the suggestions that have been posted here with little success. I have iCloud completely disabled, spell check off, tried different browsers, uninstalled most of the apps that I used to use before the fabulous 5.0.1 upgrade and I still crash regularly with Safari and most games (some are not even playable anymore). The only thing that seems to work temporarily is to reboot my iPad 1 when the crashes start happening frequently and then I seem to be okay for about a day. I loved this thing for the first year and a half but spend more time cursing it than praising it anymore.

I was hoping for a quick response from Apple but now would be happy if they would just acknowledge that there is a problem!

SoramimiCake, Thanks for your encouragement. I took two of our iPad 2's to the Apple genius folks yesterday and demonstrated that both crash constantly. I also had our Phoenix development team take a few to the Apple store down there recently too. Collectively, the genius folks did everything they could think of to resolve the issue with no improvement. So, alas, another wasted trip to the Apple store.

I've maintained contact with Tier II support but they are unable to assist other than to recommend that I purchase a developer's subscription and submit a TSI. I would spend the money if someone were to assure me I'm not wasting my time going through what seems an entirely irrelevant channel and get the same lack of results.

I feel I've exhausted the avenues available from Apple to find a solution. We're using several iPads for doing some power point (Keynote) presentations on the road and watching movies on airplanes. Not quite what we intended but at least we're getting some use out of them until iOS 5 makes it out of the starting gate.

Apple, iOS 5.0.2 any time soon???

Original post from petemj23 said his iPad crashed surfing the Apple site - happy to report I can replicate that. Finally got around to doing the iOS 5 "upgrade" on the family iPad a couple of days ago and came across the crashing Safari problem when attempting to view the video for ... Mac OS X Lion. Have tried pretty much everything on this thread (deleting iCloud, turning off Spotlight, deleting and reinstalling mail accounts, closing background apps, etc., etc.) but still the case that going to http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/whats-new/#video-lion will crash my iPad 1 every time. Only thing I haven't tried is George's complete wipe back to factory settings and rebuild as a new iPad - haven't had time yet and frankly it's beyond absurd that I should have to devote that kind of time to fixing a bug introduced by Apple's engineers that now prevents me viewing Apple's own marketing videos - talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Somewhat ironically, when I view the Lion video (on my iMac) I find that the first sentence is "At Apple, we believe the way to make a truly great system is to design the hardware and the software and to continually innovate them together."

More broadly, video on the BBC News app runs but the audio is screwed, but haven't found anything else that consistently causes problems yet - kids still using it quite happily, so certainly not bricked as yet.

Doubtless at some point I'll have a go at George's suggestion but - given it clearly hasn't worked for some people - I'm a bit reluctant to take the time. (Incidentally, my nearest Genius bar is about an hour and a half away.) Maybe 5.2 will save me first...

Alick, I too am able to reproduce the crash every time on my iPad 1. Really, frustrating that I Safari on my iPad is so buggy. It seems really bad that something as obvious as this has not been fixed or was released at all.

I think apple needs to learn some hubris. I feel like they don't fix major flaws like this in a timely fashion. Worse they don't even acknowledge them. If this were Microsoft, it would be fixed much more quickly as this is a security vulnerability. Of course there aren't many viruses available for ios yet.

Disappointing...

I'm sick of this. My tablet can't do the one thing I want it to without crashing every 15 minutes. Can't even downgrade iOS to something that actually works. I'm twisting in the wind for the next iOS release with no date, no guarantee it'll be fixed (I mean you'd assume, but... they said that about the 4s battery in 5.0.1) and no guarantee that some other issue won't just pop up instead and screw me over for another half year. I've learned my lesson about how badly Apple closed source policy can screw you over, just wish it wasn't this expensive.

I haven't commented here in about a month or so, but I've been commenting on these threads since Oct. I've done all of the suggested fixes here except turning off iCloud. I've gone to the Genius Bar 3 times, had my iPad 1 wiped and reinstalled as new twice. It's still crashes and loads cached websites, won't play some YouTube vids on some sites, key board very laggy.

I hope that everyone who reads and/or posts here has issued direct feedback to Apple from the Apple feedback page. If hour here you know how to do this. Apple doesnt monitor these threads, I believe. Also, turn on your direct reporting to Apple function in settings on your ios5 devices. Please do both of these things. It helps all of us whom are waiting for Apple to issue a fix for this. Thank you.
