Safari started crashing on start up, within a second or two of loading. I restored the ipad from scratch and still the same problem. I also cleared caches and history. No change. But when I turned on private browsing, all was well. So I shut down Safari, cleared caches and history again, then turned off private browsing and then restarted Safari, and all was well again.
I've never had iCloud activated, and I'm experiencing this issue regularly. As I've mentioned before, it is not just Safari; it's any app that uses a webview (Twitter, Zite, Facebook).
This is what worked for me for my iPad 2:
1. Connect to itunes using pc/mac
2. Restore iOS to an earlier version (if you have backed up any previous versions) by selecting the version from the drop down in iTunes and let the process complete
3. Once complete, Restore ios using the restore button in iTunes (just press the restore button on the main screen of iTunes)
So, how do you fix the bug in bookmarks or history? Do you reset and stop using bookmarks? I cannot copy/paste on URL also.
I have IPAD1 and after IOS 5 upgrade, I get constant crashes in Safari, on YouTube and even in the mail :-/ So, I can't use iPad1 any more... I got for myself Android tablet for 380 dollars, and was amazed that it was several times faster, and less crashes (yes, android crashes too)... I have reporting to apple enabled, and I hope with the next update they fix this, otherwise, no use for ipad anymore... will be cancelling my 3G service, if this will not be fixed soon.
It is happening like crazy on my iPad 1. Have tried all the 'fixes'. It's all luck of the draw for a few minutes. Bottom line, they aren't fixes. Apple has some problems with iOS5 and memory that they are going to have to fix to make this go away. Hopefully the imminent update will solve this problem as well as the iPhone 4S battery problem (which, thankfully, I don't have).
So, bottom line - there is no fix for this yet.

I will add that it is happening in an identical manner on my wife's iPad 1, as well.

This has been happening to me as well since the day that I updated the iPad. I find some of the comments for some users to be quite interesting when I read some of the threads on this problem. I included a link to this discussion so that you can see that this has been reported to Apple as a bug.

Note that one user that says "Apple has nothing to fix" and the helpful suggestion that he offers is to read the user manual. When I see suggestions like that - I just want to scream.
Everyone should make sure that they have SETTINGS/GENERAL/ABOUT/DIAGNOSTICS AND DATA set to automatically send to Apple. Everytime you crash, a report will be sent to Apple. I have hundreds of low memory crash reports in there that have been automatically sent. Apple HAS to know that there is a problem.
I suggest we keep at them, but that this problem is not going to go away until Apple releases a fix for it.
And remember, they don't typically acknowledge a problem UNTIL they have a fix. Typing quickly so I can post this before Safari crashes....

I DO have the diagnostics and data set to be sent to Apple automatically. I too have a monstrously long list of low memory warnings and crashe reports on my iPad.
While this is not the appropriate thread for this - I have begun to experience issues with my iPad not being recognized in iTunes and I am getting error messages that I had only read about others having on this discussion site.
My iPad was operating perfectly before this update - but as each day passes - more issues are cropping up. The update to iOS 5.01 came can't come soon enough for me.
Same issue in my iPad after upgrading to iOS 5. Hope it can be solved soon
After updating to iOS 5.01, my iPad 1 still crashes consistently when a lot of content is shown on screen. One site that I can repeat the crashes is over at: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/nokia-lumia-800-1039101/re view
Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I can scroll up and down, but 99% of the time the iPad screen blanks out for a second and I am back on the home screen.
I upgraded to iOS 5.01 as soon as it was available in hopes that Apple would be addressing the crash issue even though it wasn't listed as one of the fixes. Unfortunately it was not. I have to believe that they are aware of this problem since I get at least 1 update a day on this thread since I first complained about it right after iOs 5 came out.
I am still crashing but now I can use a 4 finger swipe to go between apps before my iPad crashes! Where or when is 5.02?
I had the feeling that surfing on the iPad 1 is more stable. Your link definitely crashes my Safari.
Off topic but iOS 5.0.1 related; the battery life on my iPhone 4s is MUCH worse since upgrading. I have the feeling that the security vulnerability may have forced Apple to upgrade before they were ready.

Hope is eternal...
I noticed as well that there was no mention of a Safari iPad fix in the 5.0.1 update.Still I hoped.
Don't feel bad, my 4S battery problem was supposedly addressed in this release. I used to get 24 hours of standby time with bluetooth, siri, compass, and time zone correction turned off.
My standby time is now half of that since installing ios 5.0.1. (no settings changed)
I too long for ios 5.0.2!
