Do you mean the root of the filesystem? (ie. mkdir -p /iTunes\ U/iTunes\ Media/iTunes\ U)

Or off some other base directory?

I'm having the same problem. I can download the files, and steal them out of the downloads dir before iTunes deletes them. But after a download they always appear in my iTunes library with a "get" button and the content has disappeared. Really silly.

After reading most of postings... especially those related to video (whether streaming or local) one of the main issues of course is to try to avoid certain formats , though reformatting spcifically for iTunes can be a bit tricky. Interestingly enough, if video being downloaded is setup correctly, it will play flawlessly regardless of what the circumstances are concerning playback... even while testing within simulator.

Now, using H.264 as an original interface for *.mov file is a good thing, the trick is to re-compres the video by exporting it to it's final form from a compatable player (NOT iTunes). Also, though Final Cut is a good program for editing, I have found it somewhat lacking when rendering to another format other than *.mov (Way too much overhead)

As far as : Playback & Streaming, it doesn't make any difference what video format you're downloading as long as it's compatible with iTunes / MPMoviePlayer (Which remains a "Default" player on literally all iOS systems), the player itself has to recognize the video type for play within the 1st 3 frames, otherwise it thinks that an error has occurred and releases it.

The "get" button within the iTunes library can be really frustrating, especially when you think you've saved to you system... "OOOps, gone." I have tried to solve that one... however no brass ring as yet.

I don't understand the responses either. They seem completely off topic.

What I'm trying to do is simply download the "Getting Started" videos from Apple:

http://developer.apple.com/videos/ios/

When I click on the "View in iTunes" link for those videos one of two things happens:

- the video downloads and appears in the iTunes U section of my itunes library

or

- the video shows as downloading, runs through progress

- after the video finishes downloading it appears greyed out in my itunes library

- I can not play it

- There's a 'get' button I can use to download it again, however the same thing happens

- The video is getting downloaded in the 'Downloads' directory of my iTunes library

- After the download completes it gets erased from the Downloads dir.. and I have no idea where it goes

- If I snatch the .m4v file from the download directory before itunes erases it, I can verify it is the correct video

Seems to be some problem with iTunes figuring out where to store the files. Most of the files I'm trying to download are under 'iOS Development Videos' in iTunes U. The directory exists on the filesystem, and some of the videos download and have ended up in that directory. However, others just error out consistently and won't appear in my library.

Not sure what folks are talking about with respect to creating videos. I'm having a much simpler problem just trying to download and view main developer resources.

Mikerowehl!!

I'm having the same problem ...

However I managed to download all the videos "iPhone Development Essential Videos" after I created this folder "iPhone Development Essential Videos" at the root iTunes> iTunes Media> iTunes U!

However, for advanced videos, [iPhone Development Advanced Videos], The same procedure does not work... I do not understand...

Maybe things are different by region? I created the directory, but still I see the same behavior:

Brute:iPhone Development Essential Videos$ pwd

/Users/miker/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/iTunes U/iPhone Development Essential Videos

The rest of the videos I'm trying to download go into "iOS Development Videos", so I would assume the rest of the videos in the series would do the same. That directory exists and is writable.

Does iTunes write out logs or something that one could check? I have to assume this is just some kind of permissions error, but I have no idea how to diagnose it.
