iPhone 4S camera not working ("Shutter" remains closed in app)

It might actually have something to do with restoring from an older phone, in my case I still had the 3G before moving to the 4S. But then why did it work for a few days and then suddenly started crashing all the time? I did the restoring to factory settings but that didn't help. So I will really have to go to an Apple store.

I went to the Zurich Apple store and the genius told me there was a compatibility problem between the 3G and the 4S as I suspected. The only solution was to wipe all out and start again as a new phone. Too bad because I realized that my password manager app, Strip by Zetetic (really good), hadn't been synched with my computer or Dropbox in months... So I was in bad shape! No more passwords and a phone that looked like it was not mine and that I had the reset all over again. But by the time I got home, I noticed the update OS 5.0.1 had just come out. So I thought I would try one last thing, I installed OS 5.0.1 and did restaure from iCloud. And it worked! At least for now. My camera works perfectely, and I have all my passwords again. And my phone looks again like mine. Thanks 5.0.1!

Here's the thing: many problems with ios5/iphone 4s will not be resolved until we yell at apple engineers to fix it.

Go to feedback and complain.

is there anyway to fix this? software? firmware? any instructions?

I don't know about you, but I have sent 10 emails per day with different issues...so let's mass email them.

I emailed Apple feedback with my camera problem as well- shutter frozen- white 16mb 4s, no direct response. I spoke to an Apple tech and tried rebooting and restoring the iPhone no luck. I went in today for a Genius appointment and they replaced the phone with a new one. They said replacing the camera would take 15-20 minutes and may not resolved the problem. I opted for the new phone, no charge, 15 minutes. While disappointed with the camera flaw and not being able to take pics, the customer service is excellent.

nothing to say, I tried the Joniz tip and the camera still no working. now I have a iPhone 4S, 64GB, that I paid almost US$1000, broken in Brazil. 😟

I also have the same back camera problem. Front camera is working good. But when I open the back camera it is stucks in the shutter. But it shoot pics without pressing shoot button. And there are some purple lines and pics are very dark and not clear. I did every thing to fix it, but problem is still there.

I have a corporate issued phone and the process for replacement is a big pain. All of this seems like a software versus a hardware issue. It worked fine in IOS 4. Any other iPhone 4 users still having this issue, even after the 5.0.1 update?

I just discovered the same problem: Camera app does not function either front or rear (4S, new ~2 weeks ago; IOS 5.0.1; it all worked until today).

I start the camera, it begins, the shutter SOMETIMES OPENS, then the whole phone goes black. Upon a retry of the camera app, I get a security sign-in screen, then a black screen.

I'm in Europe till the 20th; HELP!

The same problem... I bought 4s on 30Nov2011 and camera got stuck in the shutter.. I tried to recover IOS from DFU mode, it has not helped.

iPhone 4S 16G running on Verizon.

Camera worked initially then started to sputter.

Would lock up but then it restored itself. Eventually the shutter locked completely after using FaceTime.

Apple store in Munich performed a hard reset but didn't help.

Is the solution a new phone?
