GPS Not Working in iOS5

Ever since i updated to iOS 5, navigation apps like Sygic and Nagignon are reporting that they are unable to get GPS signal. These apps were working just fine before the update.

Even other apps like Foursquare and Gowalla are completely off ... the only thing that seems to be working is Maps but its not able to identify current location correctly.

Its rather frustrating to see paid apps especially Sygic not working ...

You are correct that GPS sort of works, but no apps that require accurate GPS work.

This never used to be the case. I could be a passenger in a car and the blue dot perfectly followed the route I took. Now it veers all over the place, off to the sides of the roads, getting stuck then suddenly jumping.

The main GPS Navigation app I have just refuses to move at all, and just says 'determining your location'.

This only happened after iOS 5, but if it is only related to jailbroken phones then I'm confused because I have never jailbroken my iPhone. It is however a replacement for the iPhone I originally bought, because the Home button stopped responding.

Is it possible that the Apple Store have given me a Jailbroken phone and could this be causing my GPS to fail?

A few days ago, some friend give me his iPhone 4 to upgrade his IOS from 4.3.3 to 5.01 ( before IOS 5.1 released),so i say this is a great time to exmine this problem, I use GSM SIM so i open Map app and its find GPS fix very quickly without net, without WIFI and indoor. As soon as i update it to 5.01 the problem appeared!!!

So, for sure the problem in the new IOS.

But can anyone told me if the problem exist if you use 3G SIM card? anybody try this, or the same problem still exist?

Thanks

I have the same issues with my iPhone: Never been Jail Broken or insides fiddled with.

** Details: iPhone 3GS 32GB (8.1 GB Free) / Model: MC13B / Version: 5.1 (9B17*) / Firmware: 05.16.05 / Purchased from new / Data: O2UK with 3G & Edge**

I would say I used the GPS function on a daily basis & ever since I updated to version IOS 5.1 my GPS has broken to a certain extent where it can not be used with Sat Nav Apps (CoPilot / Waze / NavFree)

I have tried various fixes, no sim, 3G on/off, wifi on/off, restore as new, back up restore, I have tried everything I have read on the forums.

In clear skies outside, I can get a fix that is not very accurate (Google Maps). I can aventually get a big ring with the pulsating blue dot, however it is out by 60-100+ feet. The dot usually jumps a few hundred feet & don't track your route correctly. Since realizing its something to do with the update & not the Apps, I downloaded GPS Detail App & GPS Status for monitoring purposes. If I use a Sat Nav App, it may start working in the beginning when I get a GPS fix, but soon loses it & the App freezes or cathes up mins later. I was also using Sports Tracker for Cycling & walking however the GPS logging of this data show erratic movements etc.

I am like others so unhappy about this problem, the who;e reason I got my iPhone was because it was everything in one. No need for a sat nav etc 😟 I just really hope there is either an official press release or update to fix this issue.

In future I don't think I will ever be so quick to update my iPhone again. Please fix, 3GS is perfect I don't need any other iPhone etc!

In the event that critical mass of numbers has some kind of impact, I too am without usable GPS.

I have an iPhone 4, never been jail broken, and I have a few satnav apps for driving, cycling and walking. They are all now largely useless. A few examples would be:

TomTom - useless, Occasional accurate positioning but for no more than about 15 minutes then freezes and shows a status of 'Poor GPS reception'

Nav Free - useless, occasional (inaccurate) positioning, mailnly reporting 'Poor GPS'

CoPilot - useless permanent status of 'Determining Current Position'

SatNav2 - Positioning is wildly out most of the time and it takes very jerky and inaccurate guesses as to where I am

Take me to my car - no more than about 75m accurate and therefore a bit useless.

There is quite an investment in apps here. I believe that by going through iTunes, it is possible to get refunded. I would suggest that if enough of us do this, it might inject a little more urgency into delivering a solution

I have done some tests today (Open field clear surroundings, clear sky) with regards to the GPS system on the iPhone as discussed above.

I can not get a great reception only a "Good Fix" which keeps losing turning it to a "Poor Fix" It only ever stays as a "Good Fix" for max of a couple of mins (In a stationary position)

I can never manage to exceed the following: Horizontal Accuracy 47M / Vertical Accuracy 70M (thats the best it stays @ for a few mins if that) Then it reads:Horizontal Accuracy 65M / Vertical Accuracy 226M.

I have now had the iPhone unlocked by the network provider. I have tested the GPS with a new sim card (same number / same network) I have also tried with a different number & network & exactly the same results. It definatly appears to be the update!

I have now had a brand new Apple battery & Apple GPS Antenna inserted into the iPhone & the same results has appeared.

Apple are usually really good with Support Help Desk, I will now open a issue with them but feel they wont be able to comment on the situation. If they plan on not supporting the iPhone 3GS any more with updates, I would have preferred they didn't even update the last one which has destroyed the GPS effectivness.

On the basis of getting refunds, I don't think that will happen. I just don't think I will ever buy anything Apple again.

The problem isn't confined to the 3GS. As so many of the posts above indicate the 4 and 4S, which I have, all are having gps issues. Similar to other posters I have used several different gps apps, Navigon, Waze, Motion X, etc., and all have exhibited similar issues. My wife has a 4 and uses Waze and Navigon with the same issues. Prior to iOS 5 I had no issues and had originally used Navigon North America since it was originally released, on several different iPhones. I never had any serious issues that weren't quickly corrected by Navigon in an update. I even posted reviews on the app store as well as gps forums praising the app. I still feel it's the best available but since iOS 5 it has major functional issues as do all the others.

My only suggestion here is to use the feedback form with Apple, call into Apple Care, visit the Genius bars at the Apple stores and also use whatever contact is provided for the app companies themselves, to make certain that the issues are well known and documented. Hopefully a future software revision for the phones will deal with this. At least that's what I'm praying for otherwise I may have to purchase a stand alone device when I seriously need navigation assistance that I can trust and rely on.
