Well the chances of you needing to backup to iCloud in the middle of the day while walking around are low. I turn off my WiFi after leaving home and turn it back on when I get home at night, let it do its thing, and use it for faster browsing. During the day, while the phone is on, youre almost always encountering locked WiFi signals so you can't really connect (especially in NYC where you and I are).

Also I'm not sure the WiFi shutting off in sleep mode is immediate or not. There may be a short cooldown period fwiw

I leave my wifi and bluetooth on all the time (have to connect to my car's bluetooth).

I also experienced faster battery drain when I first got my 4s last week. Lost 18% overnight compared to 3-4% normally with my previous 4.

So, I came here and read all the suggestions and tried most of them. The ones that seemed to help me the most (now I'm back to normal battery drainage rate).

1) Do a reset by holding down the power and home button together until you see the apple logo.

2) Turn off as many apps as you can under icloud (I only have contacts and notes turned on).

3) I do have icloud back up ON as it will only automatically back up your phone to icloud IF you are plugged in and connected to wifi. Or you can manaully start the backup by pushing the "back up now" button.

4) After doing 1-3 steps above, if you still notice faster battery drain (you should expect small increas in battery drain due to ios5 since it does more now) then as a last resort, try the restoring your device and set up as NEW in itunes.

I actually did all of above steps and now my phone loses about 4-5% over night and am back to normal.

Hope this helps.

I landed on this post because my battery life on my 4S is horrendous. This morning my phone was 100% charged. 4 hours later, with only mild use (checking emails and facebook occasionally) it was down to 44%.

I haven't tried doing the "calibration" (letting it run to zero) yet. I may also try reinstalling iOS5, since I suspect that is what a Genius will suggest.

I hate to have to turn off all the cool features that make the phone so wonderful in order to get reasonable battery life. There's gotta be a bug in the OS that's leaving battery-sucking processes running.

I have let it run down completely, so far it seems to go about 24hrs before it needs a recharge, althougth it doesnt drop the level that fast and most the time its in standby etc. All power hungry apps or tasks are not running, although I havent done a complete restore.

Maybe I need to get one of those original batteries that we used when mobiles were first invented? - ones that are like a couple of house bricks <LOL> 😀

I have also woke to a dead iPhone the last 2 nights despite the phone being at 80%. However th bad battery life only seems to be happending at night so far.

I took it out on the golf course and used it for 18 holes and it still had 30% left without really having to do the tricks I used to on the 3GS. But both nights ( no Wifi, no bluetooth, not plugged in) it has comepltely died. I didn't have automatic diagnostics on, but I do now because I have 2 low memory and 2 low battery reports in the diagnostics. It also shows nothing under "time since last full charge" despite me having it plugged in all day the first day. (I didn't really look at the percentage since I had that off at the time, but it is on now)

Been plugged in for an hour now and it has gone from 45% to 88%. I think my 3GS would have been fully charged by now.
