Since I posted a reference to the battery drain issue I observed I thought I would update my latest response here - my battery life is now much longer after applying [1] and [2] below.

Problem Solved !!

There were three contributors to root cause on the above observations:

[1] Battery Drain --> Task Crash - Solution Resotre iPhone at home from iTunes
After going back to the Genius Bar and explaining the issue they ran a software profiling application on my iPhone and discovered that the "Springboard" task was getting into an odd state where it was always consuming a large number of CPU(s) cycles and thus draining battery. Doing a restore and re-sync per the instrutions at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137?viewlocale=en_US

[2] Battery Drain --> Location Location Location - turning off this functionality when not needed greatly improved my battery drain

[3] Touch Screen Glitches --> Car AC-PowerConverter power noise

It appeared that the noise from the swtiching power inverter I was using in my car caused some odd behavior on the touch screen due to supply noise - after disconnecting the iPhone 4S from the power inverter the touch screen performed **exactly as expected**

Genius Bar profiled the software issue quick and with solutions [1]-[3] the product works great !!!!

Thanks!

I have the same problem. I updated to the new OS yesterday evening. I put it on charge before bed. This morning I had 100% charge as usual. Within 7 hours the battery was totally dead. I didn't call anyone, didn't try out the Siri or do anything unusual. Normally my battery last just over 1.5 days. Now it won't even last a normal working day. Has made me wonder if I should go Android. I am so angry about it.

An update. after 2 nights of waking to a dead iPhone, I charged my phone to 100%. Before I went to bed at 11pm the charge was 72% and when I woke up 68%. It then lasted all day with some messaging and emailing. I tis now at 1%. Everything has been except Wifi and Bluetooth. Usage shows 5 hrs 20 min, and standby of 1 day 8 hours.

Mine has improved a little too, its now needing a full charge after 1.5 days (instead of 1), however I am doing a complete drain on the battery each time and then recharging it from empty.

Battery Doctor (search iTunes apps) is good (and free), it doesnt do any harm, but does keep track of your charge cycles and if they are overcharging, normal or fast charges, and keeps a calendar log for each charge. It also shows you the three charge cycles as your phone is charging, most people probably take it off charge when it reads 100% but if you use Battery Doctor you can see it does two other 'lower level' trickles before it comes up as fully charged. This is probably reflected in Apples own charge indicator, but Battery Doctor makes it easier to monitor and check it. (you can always end the task / battery doctor task) when its completed.

I thank everyone for their input on the 4S battery issue, particularly those of you who are high levels and have lots of experience. However, let me repeat a previous statement I made. MY expectations for battery life stem from MY personal experience on MY other iPhones (3GS and iPhone4). When I loaded OS5 on my 3GS and iPhone4, it did NOT devistate the battery life. My 2 year old battery still performs longer than my new 4S. However, realizing that with the new processor and other internal hardware elements (and using Apples own specs), life may be shorter on the 4S. Now, I have used several tips I found in this string (and others), and MY 4S battery life has greatly improved. It has gone from lasting half a day to lasting a day and a half, and I dare say there may still be some improvement yet to come.

I have been noticing the same issue with my iPhone 4S since 10/14. The battery drains as you watch. Here are two things I have done today, that seem to have improved battery life:

1. Disable automatic Date & Time setting

2. Two battery charge cycles (100%-0%)

The current battery stats are :

Usage :19 min

Standby : 2 hrs, 18 min

Battery: 99%

I have no explanation for this, it could very well be - apple silently increasing its server capability/fix bug in their cloud servers, so that millions of iphones dont keep on retrying in background.

update- while typing this comment, battery dropped to 97% 😟, although still not as bad as last few days.

I was having this problem big time, and I noticed that the GPS arrow was on all the time. I shut down all the programs (even Siri) and it was still on. I finally it figured out. When I first got the phone I was playing with Siri and just like in the commercial, I told it to remind me of something when I got home. Well Siri reminded me like she is supposed to (Very Cool!) but apparently when you give her a location based reminder she does not erase once she reminds you. This reminder sits in the "reminder que" and continues to to ping the location services. The only way I have found to shut it off (aside from turning off location services completely... not) is to search for reminders and check the box next to the location based reminder. That tells the phone that you are done and stops the pinging that burns you battery down.

I don't know if that is your particular problem, but it worked for me, my battery is now functioning as it should.
