I'm not sure how to delete all contacts AND reset the Contacts function to it's original state (empty), however, I just replaced every contact on my iPhone 4S because of duplications and errors that occured when I synced it with my computer Address Book.

I selected my iPhone in iTunes and selected the Info tab. I left all previous settings (contacts, calendars) in tact, and scrolled down to the bottom of the page to "Advanced" and selected "Replace Information on this iPhone - Contacts," and Voila, all previously (and jumbled) contacts were replaced with a new, clean set.

I struggled with this one for some time - I had some 1280 duplicates on my iPhone 5 (iOS 6) and could not even delete manually. Tried the dummy account method - did not work. Used a free 3rd party app, did not work.

Then I took the plunge and used DeleteQ (yup you have to pay for it) - and that worked, finally. Then I synched via iCloud (NOT iTunes or any other way i.e. choose ONE synching method only) and so far it has worked a treat.

Much relief to finally get it sorted 🙂 🙂 🙂

I believe this will work for the group.

It seems to have worked for me.

Backup the contacts on your phone to iTunes. (Be careful with iTunes and just do one thing at a time - Contacts only)

Wait until the backup is complete and finished.

Go to your Contacts book on the computer and manually delete the contacts.

(I did this in the Mac Contacts book and by using the shift-highlight and delete keys it took about 3 seconds to delete about 900 contacts.)

Re-Sync iTunes and they are gone.

This seemed almost too simple so I hope it works for you guys.

Once you complete the backup, go back to your iPhone. Tap “Settings” -> “General” -> “Reset”. Select “Erase All Content and Settings” and tap “Erase iPhone” to confirm. You will see an Apple logo and a progress bar during the data removal process. Once completed, all the data on your iPhone are erased, try to erase iPhone data.

But this way doesn't permanently erase iPhone data, to permanently erase iPhone text messages, read this article: How to Permanently erase data on iPhone.Even no one iphone data recovery can restore them.

I too have done all the "normal" things to get rid of the contacts off my phone, but still have 255 extra contacts that got sync'ed to it some how long ago. Had to use iOS Data Eraser app, ensure it was allowed access to my contacts (under Privacy under settings) and then reboot my phone. It then saw all my contacts, and I could delete them. Now, I can turn back on my Google Contact sync, and my Facebook contact sync.

This is the resource: How to completely erase data from iPhone without restore.
