Double Message Alerts with iPhone 4s.

Has anyone encountered this problem? And, more importantly, figured out how to fix this?

My iPhone 4s gives two rapid sound alerts for one text message, and I cant understand why. Very annoying.

I have had the same problem with my iPhone 4 & my brand new 4s! Been in to the Apple store multiple times, they have not got a clue! All they keep offering me is replacement phones which isnt what I want! I have tried everything to make it go away & as a lot of you have mentioned there is only temporary fixes! It's not all tones which splutter, only - text tones, whatapp, facebook! Just alert tones!

A guy who I spoke to yesterday confidently said there is no update for the iPhone in the pipeline for a while!!!!

This is not good for people like us experiencing this problem! This is driving me mad!!!!

This is not a strange conspiracy of every iPhone I own being faulty with the same problem! IT'S A SOFTWARE ISSUE!!!!! Despite what multiple Apple Geniuses have told me!

Grrrrrrrrr

REHASHER is actually right in what he says. For atleast some of us, none of the mentioned sollutions works as more then temporary. Have myself done complete restore, a handfull of hard reboots, plenty of soft reboots, played with alert and sound setting, etc. The complete restore sollution worked for a month or so, but as for a workaround, turning vibration off is probably the best sollution.

In my case this all started after the latest iOS5 update. Apple products are not where I want to see the need for workaround; that is one of the reasons I abandoned MS and Android for computers and mobilephones.

freinds the issue is with the notifications setting "View in Lock Screen" & alert type "Banner"

- If you turn this setting "OFF" the alert doubling stops permenantly.

-OR You can either choose none or alert instead of banner in notification option.

I found this double msg alert in every other app too, like yahoo, whatsapp, imsg, message, app deals, pimp my screen.

It is the issue of how user want message alert in phone, selecting banner or view in lock screen creates problem.

Any one have any permanent solution to fix it apart from these tricks.

Having the same problem. Ocurred this morning for the first time on airplane mode with Wi-Fi on and for me it's only happening in the mail.app. (I tried messages with airplane mode off, no double sound.)

I got a gmail account set up via exchange and some mails go through a filter wich automatically marks them as read.

This morning I got some mails going through the filter and the iPhone (4S, 32GB, 5.0.1, A406) did make a weird sound without showing any notification. I looked for thw tone in the notification sounds but I couldn't find it. It's sounds like tri-tone but not tri-ish.

This is still happening after setting the sound of new mails to none.

Not sure if I did the hardreset right (power + home just switched the phone off and I had to start it by pressing power again) but it looks like it's fixed for now.

I think I found a solution. For me the problem is only happening on SMS text tones. As letrocks suggested, it is the View In Lock Screen that is the problem. Turning it off fixed it for me, but it didn't matter what alert style I was on, if View In Lock Screen was on I would get the double tones. Unfortunate I have to disable this and let's see how long this workaround lasts.

Hm... you know what i did a few days ago? I pasted 250ms of silence in front of the sound. Like here:

User uploaded file

Weirdly enough it seemed to help with iMessage/SMS.app, but not so much with other communicator apps like WhatsApp, Palringo, IM+ and so on. I can still hear double sound and I can feel the vibration going off at the same time when it cuts the sound at the first time... if that makes sense 😝

Anyway, the above sound helped a bit, but only with iMessage/SMS and even this could fail any minute... There is certainly an issue somethere and obviously Apple will never admit it!

However, some friends of mine, 4S owners, don't experience this issue. They experience other issues though...

Here's the above sound file (.m4r):
