This can't be so hard to do but is extremely annoying for the users.

Come on, I bought a brand new sim-lock free 4S, call it quits with my old carrier and transfer my number to a new carrier. Now I just want to have my visual voicemail back. How many thousand people run into the same problem every day now??

This thread isn't about VVM in the first place, it is about the problem that you cannot change the voicemail number that is programmed in the SIM card and will be used to access your voicemail by the iPhone if you push the corresponding button in the phone app. The only know work-around so far is to separately store you voice mail number in the address book ALTHOUGH...

...yesterday I received my new SIM card that I requested from FONIC and now the voice mail button works! I specifically asked them to send me a SIM card with my ported number stored in it and now it works. I am not sure if this was actually the solution or if I received a different version of the SIM card or a different profile as my provider is now shown as O2-online instead of FONIC but at least it works.

NOW I just have to get VVM working for my two ported numbers ;-)

We know the solution allready. It is called a "Carrier Bundle". The problem has been that iPhone distribution is done in stages and Carriers that are not yet selling the Newest (iPhone 4s) phone do not produce (or maybe don't even know the new codes) the Carrier Bundle until they officialy sell the new phone.

On previous phones you could bypass the programed number and reprogram whatever number you wanted for the VoiceMail button, but Apple probably didn't like the code being out in the wild so the changed the way the button is programed on iPhone 4s.

Complain to your Carrier that you need a new Carrier Bundle that supports the iPhone 4s Voice Mail button.

The guy at my AT&T store did it from the store computer with access to my account. He said he'd never heard of this issue and I told him he couldn't say that anymore. After an hour of difficult theories, a tech guy walked by and said "disable visual voicemail" as though we were visitors from the 19th century. Whatever he did, my 4S is back to iPhone 3 user friendly voicemail. I would have dropped back to 4 or even 3 if I couldn't have restored the voicemail of the "old days." Sometimes progress isn't that progressive. I'm learning to live with Siri but sometimes she really cops an attitude.

I have visited the Apple Store Genius Bar in Amsterdam with the same problem. They had never heard of it and did not have a resolution for my problem. Apple! Please respond to this discussion.

This is my situation: I have an original unlocked iPhone 4, with iOS 5.0.1, purchased in the Netherlands at a Telecom webshop. I think the Dutch webshop got it from the UK, looking at the power adapter that came with it. I mainly use it with a Dutch mobile operator that does not have Visual Voicemail. I use my iPhone 4 also when I am abroad with German, Austrian, Belgian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish or Italian simcards. I never use those operators voicemail service. I always use my own voice mailservice, for which I use *61, *62 and *67*...# codes to forward my calls to my own voice mail service in case of busy, unanswered and unreachable. So I need to reprogram the voicemail button as well to access my own voice mail service, instead of the number "1233" that my dutch operator has programmed in the SIM card. Currently I am wasting a lot of calling minutes from my subscription by accidently pressing the Voicemail button and therefore calling 1233.

My previous phone, an iPhone 3 with iOS 3 did

Apple please re-establish the way to re-purpose the Voicemail button, using the **5005*86*xxxxxxx# codes.

I have the same problem. I cannot assign my voicemail's number to the button. My carrier's website (E-plus) says I should use the GSM code *5005*86*mailbox-number# - this appears to work with previous models - but not with my new 4s (ios 5.1). I have contacted my carrier and was told that I have to ask Apple...

Apple please give us a solution. 😠
