Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

This tool only kills some background processes to free up some used memory. It doenst defrag anything or gives you more space on your device. Won't make any difference. But it's free, so it can't hurt to try.

Also, in reply to geoffreyfromgic:

First you tell people that you have an upgraded firmware done by the Apple Store.

Then you say that you have iOS 5.0 (Like I asked you)

Then you state that you are back on 'original' firmware, whatever that may be.

So.. what's the situation? Did your Apple store downgrade your device? I can't imagine...

Anyway, iOS 5.0.1 seems to be a bit faster. Safari seems to be responding faster than before and also some of my apps like Flipboard seem to be a bit quicker. Please note that you cannot go back to 5.0 if you would like for some reason (I think people know what I mean).

Tips so far gathered from this thread:

- Disable all notifications for all apps

- Turn off iCloud

- Upgrade to iOS 5.0.1.

Incorrect twice.

Defragging is reducing the fragmentation on storage devices like HDD's. Processors don´t use space or memory, processes do. Storage and apps using storage space is something different than memory that processes use. Please note that.

Downgrading is possible without jb. But there are a lot of other forums around that will give you the exact information you need.

Many thanks to you and your comments.

One should always refer to the time scales over the weeks that I reported.

At this point of time today, my iPad First generation is working very well indeed.

It started as a good gadget in February of 2011.

After the upgrade to iOS 5.0 about one month ago, the Mail App, previously perfect, started crashing in mid composition of email messages, like after tapping about 6 lines. No backup, all gone.

Later I reported some advice from an Apple rep on the phone eg.restore as new iPad from iTunes..

This did not help, so I went to the local Apple Store near my home.

They did the installation of FIRMWARE. And it was ios 5.0 . Presumably from a better source or somehow a non corrupt upgrade. This was excellent. And they did not charge.

At that time, subsequently, I was asked what iOS I was using. I answered, note-- after firmware install, that it was 5.0 .

When the announcement of the Software update, on the iPad, appeared lately, I did the upgrade again by myself, thru the Net, without iTunes on P C, to 5.01.

My iPad is now working well, and has ALL THE bells and whistles .

The Firmware thing at the Apple Store was the turning point and I have never looked back!

Good Luck to you all,

-G

Same here. Slow as thick mud. iOS 4 wasn't that fast either, but iOS5 is a disaster on an iPad 1. It is so bad I might consider an Android device next spring. Are you listening Apple???

I have an iMac 24", also slower due to bloatware called 'Lion'. And now my iPad 1 is close to barely usable. AAARGH.

Symptoms:

- Safari crashes. All the time.

- Safari multiple tabs. Even with simple sites and only two tabs open, it has to reload the whole page again after switching tabs. Didn't use to be like that.

- Mail crashes sometimes

- Pages / Numbers crash many times

- Memory management is broken. I use the FreeMemory app. Free memory goes down to less than 5 MB sometimes. Didn't use to be that bad.

- Just overall slowness. Opening apps, switching apps. Freezes for several seconds in apps or outside of them.

So far I have been a happy Apple user for almost ten years but I begin to doubt this. Apple needs to get his act together real soon!

My IPAD1 escentially becamo a paperweight after IOS5. I was really upset. It just made no sense. Yesterday I approached someone at the genius bar. After argueing with the guys for 10 minutes while he was trying to spin the problems away, He gave me one last thing to try.

This was so easy it was even more upsetting. When you install IOS5, all the apps stay open on the multitaksing screen, That is, when you double click and the menu on the bottom pops up, almost everyone onf of my apps was still openend. He explained to me that they were all running in the background. I double clicked on every one and deleated them. (this should be done about once a week.

The unit immediately started to funcition like new.

I then got into a heated discussion with him about how the **** they could be told to spin the problems away without first explaining, and if it really makes sense to keep every **** app you have opened, operating in the multitask screen without knowing it. If you dont deleat them, they will eventually all be running.

Try the same everyone. That should get you 80% of the way there. let me know of it worked for you.

One should not have to do this. The premise of the memory management is that the system should handle the "pausing" and shutting down of apps as needed, keeping it transparent to the user. You're not supposed to have to go through and kill all the background apps, and I never found that I had to under iOS 4. Under 5, though, there appear to still be a couple of bugs in this behavior.

Same issue as everyone else. My iPad 1 was working perfectly just before iOS 5. After install I must wait about 10 seconds for login screen to unlock. Then wait another 10 seconds for my password typing to catch up. Safari takes about 15 seconds to open. If I click on my Google search bar I must wait 15 seconds before anything I type appears...that is if Safari doesn't crash.

Many Apple and non apple apps (that have all been updated) take two or three attempts to launch before they don't crash.

We have noticed the same problems, though to a lesser extent, with our iPhone 3GS's in particular with the unlock screen and safari.

Seems to be a systemic issue not isolated to a particular device and directly linked to iOS 5 upgrade. We have done the 5.1 upgrade in all devices and the issues remain.

Apple please respond.

Thank you!
