Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

This is reply to Marty from Walnut Creek, CA....I went back to my local Apple location again. They are great guys! They once again helped me by doing a back up on a Mac and a total restore. They did not help at all. I can not complete a task without a crash. Soooooo frustrated. I am going to contact Apple again but I am ready to get rid of Ipad if they tell me it is a problem with just my Ipad because obviously it is not. I wanted to thank you for taking your time to address this problem to Apple and also to respond to me. Hopefully Apple will come thru with a solution.

To Marty from Walnut Creek, CA,

Thank you for sharing that with us, although it seems as though they have removed your post. I hate to say this, but I think it will take more of those kinds of " threats " of desertion before any thing is done for those of us who are far enough behind to have 1st gen. iPads. I myself have been a PC guy and go far enough back to having written programs on keypunch machines ( post monitor era ). Until I won an iPod touch, which convinced me to buy this iPad, I would have never thought of owning a Mac. I was truly pricing Macs when 5.01 happened. I'm afraid that post Jobs ( may he rest in peace ), we are going to see the downfall of Apple. I was, mind you, I say was impressed by Apple with the iPad, but now I must rethink my conversion to a Mac. If you guys at Apple are reading these post, you better hurry up and

re-impress this wanna be customer! I need to upgrade my systems at home soon. ( still running XP ). And again thank you Marty for sharing that, I can only pray that the words that were spoken to you were spoken with sincerity.

Hi,

I Poster erlief that I have the Same Problems, so I wanted to see if the Apple store could help. First I asked them if they had heard of ipad1 problems yet and they said I was the first....

Ok so they did a complete reset connected to an apple. The version is still the same and also the build (they said they sometimes have current builds that the enduser doesnt get in itunes).

I haven't done a restore from my local windows pc yet. But so far the iPad seems to run a lot smoother. Keyboard comes up quickly, almost no typing lags and so far no crashes. Also some sites that had embedded youtube videos wouldnt play the video, also this works now.

I will probably do my restore soon and I'm hoping it won't go back to slow/crashes. I will let you know.

Here it is in a nutshell..

To get proper performance with the 1st gen iPad you either need to use iOS 5 WITHOUT iCloud or stay on iOS4.

I've tried all sorts of combinations and these are my conclusions. Maybe Apple has a fix coming with iOS 5.1, but I'll believe it when I see it.

..and to all those people complaining that your tablet it useless now, I suggest you insist that Apple restores your tablet to iOS 4. We all know how well the iPad 1st gen runs on that, so you'll have no complaints about the speed. Personally I'm now running on iOS 5.0.1 without iCloud and it's working well. It's not as fast as iOS 4, but I'm willing to sacfirice a little bit of speed for the added features. (and when I say speed, I mean things like text input responsiveness)

Thanks Bill,

I just tried the solution suggested in several posts above to go to Settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset All Settings

This helped to speed it up a lot, but there is still a bit of lag in opening apps, moving between apps, and in typing that I don't recall having in 4. That said, doing the "reset all settings" did help to speed the system up to 'useable' again.

I wish I could turn off iCloud, but that's one of the best features (and reasons why I upgraded) in 5.0.1, so I will be keeping it.

Hopefully in future software updates Apple can address the lagginess for iPad 1, but I won't hold my breath since they will likely be releasing the third version this year.

I would LOVE to be able to iCloud properly with iOS 5! Let's hope the brainiacs at Apple are reading this and are working on a solution. 🙂

..a REAL solution! Not just restoring 5.0.1 and hoping for the best. Ditch something (other than iCloud if possible) to free up some resources.

What I don't understand is why iOS 5 runs well on the 3GS (which also has 256mb RAM). Perhaps it has something to do with the screen resolution difference or the way the A4 allocates memory?

Apple..don't lose your reputation of having a solid platform because of this. If it means ending the updates for the 1st gen iPad then so be it. Showing people a stock iPad 1st gen running iOS 5.0.1 with iCloud enabled is like showing an old Anrdroid tablet struggling to run the latest Android OS. Definitely NOT the experience you want new prospective users to see. 😟

Hi,

So I have recently reported, that I had my iPad being reset at the apple store, but didn't restore from the backup. So far it was working smooth again... I then wanted to see what happens, after restoring my backup. First, it seemed to work quite fast as well (maybe a bit slower than I remember from iOS4). But after using it normally for a couple of days, it went back to being super slow again (crashes, keyboard and typing lags, etc).

So my last thing to try is reset and set up as new iPad (without restore). I hope this will help, even though I must say this is far from what I'm used to from apple. First it will take me loads of time to "manually backup" all app settings (i.e. bring them to paper) and also to bring them back on after having to install all apps again.

If that doesn't help I will ask apple to replace the device. Since I was the first in my local Apple Store to show up with that problem, I suppose there must be iPads 1 that work normally with iOS5? Maybe it's just the pads from a specific series of production...

Even though they were very friendly and helpful in the apple store, I am still very disappointed in Apple. In my Opinion you can't release a software for a device on which it won't work properly, at least not without giving the option to downgrade again. On my old PC laptop I do have the option to go back to Windows 98 if I wanted to...
