Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

I have been reading these posts and all the whining about Apple.

As a tech guy and I can tell you what is happening from experience.

I have helped a few people with similar problems both on iPhones and iPads.

In fact I have a 1st generation iPad that suffered from these problems and I fixed it a month ago and the iPad works perfectly with all services enabled.

Its very simple. Re-install your software and do not restore from backup. Re-add your mail accounts and apps from the app store (fresh copies). It is pain but a 1x process. I have done this on a few iOS devices. It has worked every time for crashes, battery life, etc.

I think some data from old OS's gets corrupt and causes problems. Something in the backups is the culprit and the only (or simplest way to cure) is just re-do it.

Good luck.

*sigh*

Two days ago I was browsing the App store (on ipad 1) and found an app which required IOS5, I went and downloaded it, wow that was a mistake.

I went looking to see if it happened anyone else, and i was saddened to see this has been going on since October.

Its quite clear apple have no intention of fixing all these issues*, ipad 1 users to them are done and dusted

* delays in all actions, and occasional freezing on keyboard, safari is like a browser from 1943, music app gives you white screen of death for about 20 seconds

newstand consistanyly crashes and there is no memory which makes it unusable, i now look at my ipad and pick up my laptop instead <----thats the worst part

They have the ipad 3 to worry about now and after just finishing Steve Jobs book last week (on my perfectly working ipad thank you very much apple) i cant help feel this is more of apples "that product is behind us move on" attitude which ran throughout the book

Hey apple thanks for breaking our ipads, if you like i could throw me iphone against the wall??

Deepest thanks go out to Marty for all that went into getting Apple's attention re: all of these iOS5 issues! I had begun to mourn for the pursuit of excellence that I'd always believed Apple upheld in "the good old days.". I'd never felt they were in over their heads before, but recently I'd been feeling that way. I've been feeling Windows-like frustration each time my iPad crashes. When I went to the Apple store, the Genius' diagnostics could read the log of a hundred low memory email and Safari crashes....something Apple Tech Support told me they'd "never heard of before".

Playing it close to the vest is fine as far as rolling out new products is concerned, but it's the worst possible strategy when it comes to customer support.

Thank you again, Marty, for updating us...It feels better knowing that they have been made aware, in a very real and direct way. I want to see Apple continue to prosper and to always do what they've done best.

I was worried about updating the iPad 1, as my old second gen iPod slowed down with ios 4.2.1. Also with all the posts across the web, made me hesitant to do so.

So far after 15 hours, I'm not noticing any lag or instability on ios 5.0.1. Of course I didn't turn on ICloud and have 4 gigs of space left after a complete restore. Didn't restore from backup.

Your results may vary though. Perhaps I got lucky.

Thanks - worked perfectly for me too. Horrible lagging and some nasty crashing before - smooth and fast now - and only took moments to perform.

🙂

This is what I did and it works.

1. Turn off iCloud.

2. Go to setting - general - reset - Reset All Settings.

After it finished, you'll get the set up screen like you have a new iPad, and I choose 'set as a new iPad' instead of restore from iTunes or iCloud. And then I got my iPad back, with all the data and apps intact, and it works well. No more lagging and slow typing.

I sort of found a solution.

But it requires a jailbreak 😟.

I won't post anything here, for obvious reasons.

But just disable notifications and iCloud. If you still see lag jailbreak your iPad and watch this video -

It sort of worked for me. But I can't play Dungeon defenders multiplayer, if anything; it's the game not the firmware.

Typing is somewhat faster, apps crash a lot less (some games sometimes do. It's strange that the high end games such as real racing and ininity blade 2 work perfectly, but games like dungeon defender crash my iPad).

(FYI. I don't jailbreak to get free apps, I jailbreak for the awesome tweaks)

I Never ever thought that I'd experience something similar to when I decided to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista but this is exactly what happened when I upgraded to IOS5. It's awful, Safari browsing is now a joke. Typing an address or filling in a form takes forever, iPad 1 memory simply can't keep up. I've disabled completely the notification center and restored from scratch but Safari browsing still *****.

Something is amiss on your iPad or your network. I'm using iOS 5.0.1 on my iPad 1 with some Notifications turned on (Messages, Reminders, Calendar, and some Apps), some iCloud features turned on (Contacts, Calendars, Reminder, and Find My iPad) and Location Services On and I'm not seeing that sort of slow-down. Safari is actually faster than with iOS 4.3.5 but more crash prone.

Thank you greg06611 for that information. I am a bit of a newbie, and would be very appreciative if you or someone on this board could outline step by step the specifics of what needs to be done. Then after reinstalling fresh copies of all apps from the app store, how do I restore data such as my contacts, iTunes content, settings, etc? Appreciate the help, I want to upgrade to iOS5 but really don't want to brick my iPad 1.

Actually, if you are on iOS 4, I'd strongly recommend you to stay on it. Despite what many people are saying, the truth is, your experience will vary based on your usage of the device. iOS 5 WILL gobble up more ram, thus, making the device more prone to low memory crashes. This will not be much of a problem if you are only a casual user. For people who are multitaskers, and hard gamers, this is really an upgrade to keep away from.

iOS 4 on iPad 1 is really the best bet, especially since you are already on it, try to resist the urge to upgrade 😮

"I've had the same experience . Everything is extremely slow. I have turned off iCloud and notifications. Rebooted tons of time and the lag is still there. Every 3rd time I go to my calendar (which I do constantly for work) there is no data in the calendar. I have to swipe to the next month and back and then it is there. Keyboard reaction is insanely slow. Opening pretty much every app (including native iPad apps) has a good 10 second lag. Not acceptable. I bought my iPad the month it was released and I can not tell you how many people I have recommended it to. At least 10 people I know of bought one based on my recommendation. That stops until this gets fixed."

I had that issue as well. It turns out there's a difference between "restarting" and "resetting". Restarting is when you turn it off and then on (via the red slider, or holding power + home buttons until it turns off). Resetting is when you hold the power + home buttons for 10 or more seconds -- until the screen goes black and then the apple logo appears (don't release the buttons until after the apple logo appears).

I also purchased my iPad on launch day in 2010. I have convinced many people to purchase the iPad over the competitors because of the way it works so seemlessly. I even told people to buy a used 1st gen iPad instead of a Kindle Fire but now I have to change that. There is NO WAY I would recommend a 1st gen iPad with iOS 5 on it. I'm running mine with iCloud disabled and it's acceptable, but I still have to limit the number of tabs open in safari or it constantly crashes.

I'm so regretting upgrading to iOS 5 on my 1st gen iPad. It was a dream with iOS 4.3.3 but now it's really unreliable.

I hope Apple figures out a way to solve this dilemma. It's really embarrassing to let someone use my iPad it have to tell them to be careful how many things they open. It leaves a very poor impression. :(

IPad 1 same problems (in case a vote counts in getting Apple to take care of their customers, I'm not holding my breath).

I am willing to try the suggestion of tech guy "greg06611"

Does any one know if any backup files on the pc should be removed before the "reinstall your software" (I assume he means iOS 5) procedure, to avoid the OS from restoring from the presumed corrupt copy? If so, which ones?

Or does the OS always restore automatically from the Apple site?

Thanks
