Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

I can only add +1 to this post. I'm no developer, just a Win person who bought the Ipad 1 when it came out and use it for much more than I could ever have imagined. I push it and accept that it doesn't have the specs to handle 5.0.1 snd what I throw at it. I wouldn't want the newer firmware to be throttled to be able to run on older technology quite truthfully. I might add too that my husband and some of my friends with Ipad 1s don't have issues of any consequence because they don't push the tablet significantly. For me, Ipad 3 will be well worth the purchase and my 1 will be relegated to menial tasks--streaming Rhapsody and the like (replacing my aging Touch). Its changed how I interact with a computer these past almost two years and I'm anxious to see what's ahead with hardware that can handle what developers are coming up with. I really believe Apple couldn't imagine what 3rd party developers would create for the Ipad and its just coming into its own with the 3rd generation and new firmware.

I completely disagree. My iPad 1 is only 18 month old, if that, and I don't expect a £700 devise to be made useless in a couple of years. Thankfully I never did upgrade mine to os5 but many did. Actually i upgraded from os3 to os4 and regret it because of the lag it now has. Can only imagine the frustration of os5. This thread is getting old, it's about time Apple sorted this problem out, but it seems to me to that we are now accepting of expensive devices not to last very long indeed. To put my point into perspective, I bought a top of the range laptop in 2005 costing £800. I've upgraded the HDD and ram and it's still going strong, now upgraded from XP to Windows 7. It's almost 8 years old!!!!! I've just bought a replacement laptop and gave my old one to my daughter. My new one cost £650 and I expect that to last at least 5 years minimum because again it's a hi spec laptop. Why should we expect less from Apple iPads which equally cost top money to buy?

Your post makes a lot of sense and I agree - to a point but Apple should allow customers to undo newer firmware installs if it's not suitable. But to keep customers trapped and therefore make the devise next to useless is wrong and bad for customer service. Did they ever really test os5 on iPad1? If they did, then they had full knowledge of this problem before they released it to the public! If they didn't test it then shame on them!!!! This os5 on iPad1,s is good reason to live with the original os and never upgrade firmware in the future.

I just upgraded to 5.1 on my iPad 1 (16GB WiFi) and it seems to be running better now. I placed an order for the new iPad but I might have to re-evaluate now that this original is running faster. I would be curious to see what others think.

Don't get me wrong, the new one has a gorgeous display and is a great piece of hardware, but am I really going to take advantage of the new display? I am not going to be editing videos, editing pictures, or playing games.... decisions, decisions....

At any rate, I would be curious to see what original iPad 1st gen owners think of 5.1. I think its a nice upgrade over 5.01...5.01 was laggy.

Remember, we'll never be as snappy as a 2 or a 3 with more memory and faster processors.

Xstrandmans' smug opinion seems to be, that if one buys anything, they are foolish if they expect it to perform as expected for any length of time.

Of course, he has missed the point; this is not an issue of unreasonably expecting a product to include all the new features of subsequent versions, but simply expecting the product to continue the level of performance it had when purchased, within reason.

It is, in my opinion, terrible marketing to cripple older iPads with IOS updates, when they have so much useful hardware life remaining. Long term, this impacts customer base, as other competing products look more attractive.

My 6 year old Dell still runs well on XP! Slower than new pc's BUT, not slower than when I purchased it!

well my snow imac 400mhz runs excellent on 4.11 also, but i would in no way try, even if i could, to upgrade to the latest mac os. You just have to learn what you can upgrade and what you can't. I just wish you had the ability to go back to an older OS on ipad 1. But I use my ipad 1 everyday for business, will not upgrade until I read reviews, And when I want a faster ipad I will upgrade. I know my 89' Toyota pick up is not like the 2012, but I love it for what it is.
