Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

I just installed 5.1 on my iPad 1, which had all of the problems listed above after installing 5.0.1 and before following the suggestions in this thread to turn off iCloud and other fixes. While turning off iCloud, etc. did help to speed up the performance, the iPad was still slower than when it was running iOS 4. Now that I have 5.1 it's possible that it is a little snappier than with 5.0.1, but the improvement is not great, and it's certainly not back to the speeds it was when running 4. I'll test turning on iCloud again and see if it will keep running at the current speeds and report back.

Catsman, what websites are causing you to crash the browser? I've been using Safari a lot and no issues thus far....are you using a lot of multiple tabs? This 1st gen only has 256MB of memory so I wouldn't expect a lot out of it.

Have you tried the Opera browser? Might be a good alternative to Safari if you are experiencing issues.

Apple needs to fix the way (at least Safari) manages memory in iOS 5. When I was running iOS 4.3.3 it could max out the number of tabs open and still run fine, but now I have a hard time running more than 3.

I'd be willing to give up the ability to run several apps at the same time to have a single STABLE app.

I'm going to give 5.1 a shot, but I have a feeling I'll eventually move back to 4.3.3. It's embarrassing how often my 1st gen iPad crashes now with 5.0.1. :(

While I understand that i should not expect the same level of performance running new OS on older hardware, I do expect some sort of release note that outlines the most common problem that users should expect after upgrading. It seems pretty obvious that safari crashing, keyboard/input slowness is very common, and I can't believe that apple hadn't noticed it in their beta testing. All they need to do is to put this in a release note so that users can make a more informed decision about upgrading, especially since there is no way to go back to the previous OS. After a couple of bad experience w ios4 on the iPhone and ios5 on the iPad, I am going to just wait for the rest of the early adapters beta test ios5.1 for me.

Well, to me the problem of safari crashes experienced while using iOS5.0.1 were fixed so far following updating to 5.1. Subsequent crash occurred only once after then, comparing with three four times within half an hr mark of browsing. Think about how annoying and frustrating it was when u were typing hundreds words of forum reply, and was suddenly kicked our by a **** crash.

Keyboard responsiveness was improved either on 5.1, but still not as smooth as on the OS when iPad 1 was iniitially launched.

I'm glad I sold my iPad 1 a few days ago. Even though I have read some posts about improvments with iOS 5.1, I agree with bill_best and ballistic67 that each release just seems like a lottery and a crap shoot.

TBH performance has just gone steadily worse since iOS3, which was buttery smooth. One release of iOS4 had a wifi bug that wasn't addressed for many many months so I had to suffer slow wifi for ages,

I'd rather just have one stable app open at a time. Because Apple gimped on the memory for the iPad 1 that is all you can really expect from it.

I bought a cheap Nexus S at xmas and put ICS on it and I really find it much more responsive than the Ipad 1. I can do everything I need on the Nexus S, the only thing I miss is real estate. I also find ICS nicer than iOS.

Although Apple do make great looking hardware, I really think iOS needs an overhaul to keep up with Android.

So I'm either going to get the new Samsung tablet 11.6 that is soon to be announed or get a tab 10.1 for a bargain price and root it.

I wish everyone luck with iOS 5.1.
