Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

Same problem here. iPad is unusably slow, e.g. Opening setting takes 6-10 seconds with a crash every other time.... And that is just one example!

I am more than disappointed in Apple for

a) releasing an update that seems almost completely untested

b) not reacting to the community and admitting that they have to fix it and will

if they want to make buy an upgrade... I really think I won't. I anticipated the iPad 3 next year but this whole situation drives me away towards something else.

"If you don't like it, don't buy it" - "You know what, i don't like it anymore!"

And I'm sure I'm not the only one!

I have done two things which seem to have helped:

1) download and install one new app from the app store - that fixed the majority of app startup crashes

2) turn off 3G when I am not using it - that fixed the majority of in-app slowness, especially in Pages. I presume this is something to do with iCloud waiting for the network.

So I am still left with some long pauses on resume and app switching, but nothing I can't live with.

Exactly same issues here. Have posted my views on the Apple feedback site and, although I dont subscribe to the conspiracy theories of enforced upgrades, i have no intention of upgrading if this is the shape of things to come.

My love affair with the the iPad and all things Apple is now turning into a "7year itch" that may result in a foray into Android land if I don't see a quick and positive response from Apple.

I just ran the update to 5.0.1 and my speed is back to normal!

Mail does not crash, Evernote is responsive, Safari starts up without any hassle, Real Racing 2 both starts and is playable.

I hope the update will solve the problems for you guys as well!

Not to self: don't necessarily update to a new OS until the .01 version has been released...

interesting... having used the ipad as normal on 5.0.1 and purposely not closing any background apps after use (like ive been forced to do since 5.0 came out), ive found:

-still the really annoying page reloading every time i switch tabs in safari

-havent seen an app crash yet (early days mind)

-icloud back on with no issues (bookmarks, reminders +caldendar)

-when left inactive for a while the ipad is now actively killing the processes running in the background + freeing up available memory whereas before it wasnt - observed before and after the update via process killer app

agree with previous poster not back to where is was before ios5, but so far 5.0.1 is a marked improvement on 5.0

I agree. 5.0.1 is a big improvement. It feels like there might still be some slight lag that didn't exist prior to 5.0, but I'd say that my iPad is 90 - 95% back to normal — vastly better than it's been for the last few weeks. (So much for the cynical mumbling about Apple deliberately degrading performance.)

Significantly, I was able to re-enable notifications for Calendar events; the strange flickering and performance hits seem to be gone.

Ok my update did not help at all - if anything my iPad 1 is slower! Still crashes constantly! When I load websites at the same time with my iPad 1 next to my iPhone 4s it's no contest - the iphone is at least 3 times faster. I can't get YouTube videos to play anymore. They just load forever and when they finally begin they freeze and stay locked up. I can't believe what has happened to my iPad with 5.0 and 5.0.1 - it is truly unusable!!!!!
