This Messages app is, to quote Steve Jobs, 'a piece of kaka'. On the system that has my Contacts, I can't use Messages to save my life. On the other system with NO CONTACTS at all, I can message EVERYONE!

The inconsistency is HORRID!!! It's stupid! It's brain dead, it's stillborn... It's ridiculous!

How do I register contacts that are already on the computer? Why do I have to 'register' anything? Why doesn't it just work? Do I have to 'register' an e-mail address before sending it e-mail? NO!

This is Messages on Mavericks... Brain dead... Sorry if I broke a rule with this post, but this is ridiculous...

I am having the same problem. My grandaughter's cell phone is giving me the same thing. I can message her from my iPhone but not from my computer, all on the latest iOS's. Apple has fallen apart on the details lateley. I agree, This stuff should work.

This "Not registered with "Messages" without providing the how to is not Steve's way of doing things. Changes have started at Apple.

When time permits, on the iPod/iPad, go to Settings, Messages, Send & Receive, scroll down to Start New Conversations From, select your apple id.

A check mark will appear next to the selection. Your “incorrect selection” will then be unchecked.

Both will work as long as you have them both checked in the above selection area, “You Can Be Reached By Message At” .

Somehow the "Start New Conversations From" box got unchecked from your Apple ID for the iPod or iPad.

This same thing happened under Settings, FaceTime. There it’s called “CALLER ID” instead of "Start New Conversations From". You need to check your “apple id” also, leaving the “incorrect selection” unchecked. Again, all in the above selection area “You Can Be Reached By Message At” should be checked.

If all this is above your pay grade, no problem, call Apple and hope you get a techie that knows.

That’s the same reason why you may not get your iPod/iPad to FaceTime. The Apple ID is very important on an apple device or it will default to the senders information which may not be recognized by your apple device.

On an iPhone check your telephone number instead of your apple id.

I hope this helps.
