Factory unlocked iphone 4s???

If I buy a factory unlocked iphone 4s from USA, will it work on Indian GSM networks without any problem?

I mean, without having to unlock them illegally.

Hi - This is exactly my problem. I bought my iPhone 4S from Apple Store UK and got it back home as a gift for my wife. Here's what's happening

1. No network bars, but I can see "Vodafone 3G".

2. I can surf the net using 3G but I can't make/receive voice calls

3. My SIM PIN is off

4. Irrespective of whether Carrier Select is "on" or "off", there are no network bars

5. When I put an Airtel SIM, it shows "No Service"

6. Every SIM I tried in the 4S works on my existing 4, so it's not the SIM card fault

I've tried everything. Hard reset, restore, set up as new iphone, erase network settings, erase all content and settings, remove/reinsert SIM, etc. I was even on the phone with Apple Store UK on Friday (who asked me to restore) and will be them again tonight.

Here's what I think could be the issue: When you set up your new iPhone in iTunes, you get a welcome message which says "Congrats, your iPhone was unlocked". I have always got this on earlier iPhones, but I did not get it on my current 4S. I'm afraid this leads me to believe that my 4S is in fact locked.

I'm hoping that Apple unlocks the phone for me, as it did for Gigaom here: http://gigaom.com/apple/apples-official-iphone-3g-unlock/

Dear friend,

I would rather suggest that you should wait and not to buy the iPhone 4S from USA though it being a factory unlocked. Many of us in this forum are experiencing the same problem with our iPhone 4 S unlocked which is having some signal problems. I checked with the apple store in Delhi and they told me to send this phone back to US because there is some hardware issue.

There are some people on this forum who are more concerned about the price we paid instead of solving the problem. I feel they are quite stupid as the issue is the phone problem and not the Price.

Yes , ours are unlocked phone and we all are facing similar problem. Some of them have bought unlocked phone from US, Canada, UK and Dubai and they all are having the same problem of not getting signals in India. Whereas these fines are working fine in other countries. There could be a problem with Indian network compatibility or hardware issue as I was told by apple in Delhi.

Well i think i got some important information fr u guys regsrfing this No Signal issue

i had a detail discussion wid apple people and a high clasd mobile hardware engineers , they informed that iphone 4S which are manufactured for US & canada supports only UNPS network and in india we do not have UNPS compatibility in our networks

Phones msnufactured for australia and europe are working fine as there are both kind of networks

My source also said that to change the compatability from unps to normal q band network like in india , most prbbly it ll require a hardware change which is currently not possible moreover sets in us and canada if even replaced will behave same in india untill apple change there hardware stats for this country

i feel very less chance of this problem getting solved with jusva software update from apple.

Apple has designated a special technical team to resolve this issue which is sincerely looking into this matter and looking for a solution yo thi major problem because as per apple policy every unlocked phone should support each kind of Gsm network availabe currently in ehole world irresprctive of country.

Hopefully ee grt some relief soon.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything there is to know about cellular networks, but I think you either misunderstood something or your source is misinformed... I can't find a reference to the acronym UNPS relating to cellular service or networks anywhere. There are only a few GSM networks that operate on spectrum that is not compatible with the iPhone. Any GSM iPhone should be able to communicate with Aircel or Airtel networks in India without a problem (using their sims if unlocked, otherwise roaming from another gsm network).
