Mighty Mouse Extra Clicks

This might be a hardware problem but whenever I place my fingers on my Mighty Mouse, it would trigger the Button 4 action, and make a little click from the internal speaker, as if I had used the side buttons. This makes things incredibly hard to use (button 4 is mapped to Dashboard) since anytime I want to work with the mouse, I'd have Dashboard constantly coming in and out. I found that turning that button off will stop the clicking and triggering, but now means that I can't use that button anymore. Turning the action off, then on temporarily fixes the problem for about an hour and rebooting the computer did nothing to help.

Suggestions as to what might be causing this and how to fix it?

I shouldn't be so flippant without a smiley.

Whenever there is a mysterious and unexplainable behavior related to an electronic devices two of the more popular responses are grounding and humidity. I say it is not grounding because you, I and several other people have grounded computers yet are having the problem. Therefore I must use the next excuse that is on the list, so to speak.

The problem is with the capacitance switching and the users potential (voltage). When the problem is occurring and you are not grounded you can make your Mighty Mouse click without touching it. You have demonstrated that when you touch the base of the iMac, ground yourself and make the problem go away. So when you the user are grounded: no problem. When you are electrically floating: potential problem.

The way I cured my problem was to buy a wireless Mighty Mouse.

If it is the humidity, and it well might be because your potential is in many instances a function of the humidity of your environment, you have no easy solution unless you can control the humidity of your environment. Today the humidity is 100% and my wired Mighty Mouse is working fine.

You could probably get rid of the problem with an anti-static mouse-pad or wrist-pad for another $15-30. If hand rested on such a pad you would be grounded since the pad is grounded. I used a grounded sheet of aluminum foil and it works but is not as esthetically pleasing.

so i've tried to wipe down my entire area with fabric softener sheets, this includes my desk (top and bottm, in and out), my chair and i've placed fabric softener under the legs of my desk. unfortunately nothing has changed, i am currently operating the mac with bare minimals hooked in the usb port (mouse and keyboard) and there is no difference.

yes, the mouse still works fine when i touch the metal base of my mac.

i really do not want to get a wireless mouse or keyboard because of the inconvienence of batteries for a stationary setup. i've tried to take a piece of foil made it touch the base of my iMac to the metal backing of my mousepad. this did not work either.

thank you michael for the info.
is there anything else anyone can suggest?

yes i agree, i would love to see an actual solution from apple®. i love the way the mightymouse works simply because of the 360° scroll ball and the squeeze sensors are perfect for me since i have to design with multiple programs on a single project.

i tried to used steermouse at first because i thought it waz a software problem, but as we all kno it turns out to be the static.

thanks for your post though justin.

Actually people have reported that the G5 iMac had similar problems. On Aug 24, 2005 Steve McGuinness reported similar problems.

Sorry folks, don't know where else to post this. Last night my mighty mouse started reacting as if I was pressing the two side buttons but I was not touching them, it kept trying to launch Expose. The slightest touch would trigger the side button action. It took about 10 minutes of fighting the mouse to get to the control panel to turn of the Expose feature. (Try getting to the control panel when Expose is going of every 2 seconds!) Has anyone else had this happen to them?

That's a good question, why hasn't apple addressed the problem officially. I do know that if we're not careful, and bad-mouth apple they'll just close our post.

Thanks for pointing out the problem with the G5, I over looked that post. It's interesting because I never experienced any problems with the G5 based systems. In fact a friend of mine uses a MightyMouse exclusively with his G5 with no problems at all.

OT: SteerMouse is a great program, works VERY well with my Logitech mouse (I used it since the Logitech software wasn't universal, and didn't function). The logitech mouse by the way suffers none of this "static" issue that the Mighty does.

thanks for keeping the post alive justin.

yeah, i dont understand why apple® wont address the problem officially... no one here is bad mouthing apple® infact my love for the mightymouse is why this and the other thread up. it amazed me how apple developed a single-button-multi-click mouse along with a 360° scroll ball, its a perfect mouse for me. i'm jus so frustrated that there is almost nothing i can do to fix it, and apple hasnt addressed it offically.

i mean i could buy all kinds of different "mice" but i like the MM so i really hope apple® considers making some sort of announcement or recall or something since the problems have been wild since '05

my mighty mouse used to do that, i discovered that the light that i had on my desk (some odd novelty lightning lamp) caused the problem. the mouse would act odd when the light was on and only then. if you have any issues with the mighty mouse clicking the 4th button at the slightest touch, relocate any electical device near the mouse untill you find which one it is. apparently the mouse resieves interference which triggers the buttons.

i got the notion that other electrical devices would interfere with my imac, and i did take everything off of the three leveled desk, although it was more athstetically pleaseing, it unfortunately, did not fix my 4th button nor did it fix my "right-sensor" or "right-click". and as always, touching the base of my imac solves the problem.

thanks for your post josh.
